Royal Paintbox - From PBS - HRH The Prince of Wales reveals an extraordinary treasure trove of rarely seen art by members of the Royal Family past and present, exploring a colorful palette of intimate family memory and observation.
Royal Paintbox (2013)
Director: Margy Kinmonth
Writers: Margy Kinmonth
Stars: King Charles III
Genre: Documentary, Family, History
Country: United Kingdom, Australia
Language: English
Release Date: March 2013 (United Kingdom)
Synopsis:
In Royal Paintbox, the Prince of Wales reveals an extraordinary treasure trove of work by his forebears, many of whom were accomplished amateur artists, and traces his family's love of art through the generations. This story is brought to the screen for the first time by award-winning film-maker Margy Kinmonth.
Set against the spectacular landscapes of the Royal Estates and with contributions from Countess Mountbatten of Burma; professional working artist Sarah Armstrong-Jones, daughter of Princess Margaret, speaking in her first ever interview on film; Royal Academy of Arts Chief Executive and Secretary Charles Saumarez Smith; Royal biographers Lady Antonia Fraser, Marina Warner, Jehanne Wake and Jane Ridley; Royal tour artists Susannah Fiennes and Warwick Fuller and Lady Roberts, Librarian at Royal Collection Trust, Royal Paintbox contains insights into The Prince of Wales's own watercolours, and other works by members of the Royal Family past and present.
Speaking about what inspires him to paint, The Prince of Wales says:
"I think, you know, drawing from nature, observing from nature, is absolutely crucial. ’ve obviously been inspired by just looking. It’s usually the light, is what catches my attention. You can look at the same view over and over again and then suddenly one moment, there’s the most magical light.”
The Prince recounts how, as a teenager, the great art which lined the walls of the Royal residences in which he grew up suddenly came alive to him.
“Because when you are small you rush about, you know, pedalling or something up and down the corridors, and you notice nothing. It’s just a background. Suddenly, literally and I must have been 14 or something, suddenly all the pictures on the walls, the furniture, suddenly all came into focus. Do you know what I mean? And they had just been blurred sort of backgrounds which were just there. Then suddenly I started looking.”
The Prince of Wales takes the viewer on a journey into his family archives to reveal works of art by members of the Royal Family - including HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, Queen Victoria, Prince Albert, the prolific work of King George III in and his children in the 18th Century, Prince Louis of Battenberg who it is said could have been a professional artist, as well as Queen Alexandra, King Edward VII, Princess Louise, Prince Rupert of The Rhine, Mary Queen of Scots - and a lino cut of a circus horse done by Her Majesty The Queen as a child.
The audience discovers in the film that Queen Victoria drew and painted thousands of sketches and watercolours during her long period of mourning following the death of her husband Prince Albert.
The film also shows how professional, contemporary artist Sarah Armstrong-Jones, the daughter of Princess Margaret, brings the Royal Paintbox story up to date with the inclusion of her paintings and drawings inspired by landscape, with an exhibition of her work at the Redfern Gallery in London.
She maintains that the family link must have helped her talent develop.
“It must come down, you know, I hope we can pass it down to the next generation.”
As an active Patron of the arts, The Prince of Wales is keen to create a record of his foreign tours that goes beyond photography. For over 25 years, The Prince has invited an artist to join the tour party at his own expense. In Australia, artist Warwick Fuller is seen at work on a new oil painting. Former tour artist Susannah Fiennes provides her perspective on the Prince’s passion for art.
“So much of the time he’s on duty and painting allows him a little time for quiet reflection and also a bit of an investigation of things at a deeper level than his whirlwind existence normally allows.”
The Prince shows a selection of the paintings he has done while abroad, and demonstrates a work-in-progress while explaining the power and appeal painting holds for him.

before I watch this, I am happy to tell you that I chose the watercolor box and palette of colors for HRH Price of Wales when I was working in a renowned color and artists' materials manufacturer in London, in 1969, or thereabouts, when I was nineteen. the order/request came in, from Buckingham Palace and no one had the courage to do it, so I offered and was so happy I had the chance to choose the watercolor pans for landscapes, for the now King Charles Third.

More people should watch this delightful, inciteful, and blessed-be, quiet, program. I had no idea King Charles was artistic. He is a sensitive & refined man, quick to use the Englishman's self-depricating humour too showing a generous spirit and thick skin. May God grant him the right care for his cancer as it is possible to be cured.

I so wish the media could have more of motivation to give these sorts of insights into the Royal families instead of hounding them for their more superficial fashion sense etc. etc. This was the most wonderful insight into a sensitive, intelligent warm man who obviously has a wonderful sense of humour. I loved seeing some insight into many of the royal family and how they created art works I would never had any idea existed.

@@satsumamoonAre you asking the original commenter or are you rhetorically asking some non-existent absolute authority on King Charles having or lacking intelligence? Clearly the original commenter resonated with the way Charles dissected his approach to painting and recognized his artistic intelligence or she wouldn’t have made the comment. And if yours was a rhetorical question, it really was not as clever/deep as you think it was. But to indulge you: yes, he is educated, and from that, as well as from the way he spoke in this video, one can safely assume he is also intelligent.

Hi, french Canadian here so excuse my english please... I always saied that the now called King Charles III was a very underated person and that he deserves his moment. I discovered a very sensible, talentend, smart and funny man. It must be so hard to rule the commonwealth in 2023 and arts are a great escape four the soul and mind. Yet again, Im amazed by is talent with watercolor. At first, I tought that the landscaped painting were photographies.

I have always admired King Charles. I love that he is into organic gardening and that he loves watercolours. Anyone who loves watercolours knows exactly what he is talking about when he talks about creating the painting from eye to hand to paper rather than taking a photo. He speaks so lovingly about what he likes to paint and about his ancestors and other royals who also loved to paint. It's a lovely insight into someone who is always in the public eye and goes into his private life like no other. I'm glad he has this as an escape from his public life.

Outstanding! Totally fascinating! HM King Charles is an extremely talented artist! His paintings & sketches are amazing! It was also so fascinating to see the wonderful paintings & drawings of many of his family members from the past. They were also very talented as well. By viewing this & other Documentaries, what I have observed & love about the King is HM's openness & desire to share his thoughts, emotions & feelings, as well as sharing various aspects of his life. This results in folks being able to identify with him as a person. Not just as a King. This is very refreshing! HM also shows much depth & a sweet temperament at times. Such as his sweet reaction & the comments he made while admiring the sketches of Queen Victoria's small children. HM also shows that he is very intelligent, with many brilliant ideas. He also shows he is highly observant & has a great sense of humor, Yet, in all of this, he shows a lack of ego. He comes across as very humble. All of these admirable characteristics are so evident in this wonderful Documentary, as well as in other fascinating Documentaries of the King which I have had the pleasure of viewing. Aye! Without a doubt 'tis true! King Charles truly is an extraordinary person. HM would be so, even if he were not a King. That is what makes him all the more remarkable & endearing! Thank you for sharing!

"Through my school for the traditional arts, i have tried to do what i can to continue the living traditions of the world’s sacred and traditional art forms. It is all too easily forgotten how crucial traditions are in handing on the immense richness of human knowledge, wisdom and skill, and giving them new life and new application. I hope that the school’s practical teaching and outreach programmes will enable the next generation to bring their inheritance to life." - Prince Charles

It’s gratifying to know that time is not wasted and nature, Artistic pursuits have been embraced. People believe Art is of the idle but it is not. It takes sentiment, understanding of the Natural World, even when Surrealism or Abstractions are the favoured styles. Understanding of quiet moments, that they are not wasted, even when nothing is put to paper or canvas. The mind is an enviable, enduring, creative source of wonder. Lovely program. Thank you.👏🏼🇦🇺🖌🖼🎨PS. King Charles may find ease if he secures the corners of his work surface. I can see the Watercolour Paper needs to be anchored. A little thing that causes no mistake.

What a wonderful video - such a treat to see and hear of all this talent through the ages. The more I see and listen to King Charles the more I respect and like him - and this is a newer feeling - the ‘sensationalism’ of the news prevents us from really knowing some people, which often clouds our judgement - we aren’t seeing the person(s) in their full dimensions. Muchas gracias!!! Saludos desde Buenos Aires.

Much appreciation for the King and his Family History as Artists but makes you think what will happen to it all as the present Royals have a different take on life except for Kate who takes a camera with her and does take some wonderful photos. A lot of History and Interesting insight to the Royals Family Art. ❤

This was a most enjoyable historical video about the monarchy's passion for the art. I was not aware how many of the royal members inherited such beautiful talent. I personally enjoy oil painting and produced a few pieces. Videos such as these should take precedence and introduce the royal family from aspects that are not known to everybody. An intelligent, warm hearted insight.

During the Victoria time, what was massively focused was the future, how will the furthest know much about their ancestors as great and after it is a success. Charlie paints lovely & I love his painting

You nearly forget he's the King of England in this. So well spoken when talking about something he is passionate about.
