Not since I was an 8 year old boy, taken in the '50's by grandad Fred to watch the Thames-Clyde Express pass at speed, have I been as impressed by a Scot as I was today - a Royal Scot Class Loco ostensibly 'flat-out' up the Aire Valley to Skipton. 15 to 20 minutes down, Scots Guardsman sounded, and looked, spectacular. Between Royd House and Cononley, the mile was covered in around 40 seconds. That's pushing 75mph.
