In August 1990, ITN's Alastair Burnet interviewed Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother to celebrate her 90th birthday. Walking around the garden of the Royal Lodge, the Queen Mother - known affectionately to the public as the Queen Mum - discussed the history of the garden and, in doing so, reflected on the decades of her extraordinary life spent at the Royal Lodge. While reminiscing, the Queen Mother recalled taming the gardens of the Royal Lodge with her husband, King George VI, using the garden to grow food during wartime, and how her great-grandchildren Prince William and Prince Harry enjoyed playing on its lawn. On their tour of the gardens, the Queen Mother and Alastair Burnet were joined by Martin Charteris (Lord Charteris), former Private Secretary to Queen Elizabeth II and a close friend of the Queen Mother.

She was born a Victorian and lived to see the new Elizabethan age. The span of her life was remarkable, as was her legacy of hard work, duty, and curiosity in the world around her, which endeared her so much to so many.

It is remarkable to think the Queen Mother was born in 1900. She lived through World War 1 and was a Queen during World War two. She lived to remember the sinking of the Titanic. She lived to see man land on the moon, to the invention of the mobile phone. It is hard to imagine the collection of many memories she must have had. I would have loved to sit down with her and listen to all the remarkable things that she would have witnessed during her long life.

This was delightful, I loved that she took her handbag with her for a walk through her own garden so proper and self sufficient. And the ushering of the party back to the child’s play house through her beautiful garden. She worked so hard when she had her home destroyed through the war and through the destruction she created this timeless emersion with her stamp on it. Thank God here we have something to honour and remember her. ❤

She went to visit bombed areas fingering her pearls, while the Duchess of Windsor was in the Bahamas washing, feeding and weighing native babies in one of the many clinics she help to establish! I can say I had the very real privilege of not only being alive during her later years but also recall watching this as a child with my gran and grandpa whom where both avid gardeners, they loved the Queen mother as they where from her generation and also the old King whom my Grandfather often told stories of when i was growing up. She has a kindness to her , a bright twinkle in her smile that would bring happy thoughts even on your darkest of days. The whole country lost something much more than a person when she died. We lost a brightness in the dark, in terms of the struggles that where going on in her later years but not least she was a beacon during the war years as well, much like her late husband. Hopefully if there is an afterlife they are looking down on our nation with still some pride despite the awful things that have happened since her passing at least now she and the King are reunited with our late Queen Elizabeth

I was honored to become friends with Lord Snowdon, and to work closely with him for many months on a very special project. In his Kensington home on Launceston Place, he had many wonderful and quite candid personal photos of The Queen Mother. I told Lord Snowdon how much she reminded me of my own grandmother, which delighted him. The Queen Mother loved "Tony" very much and they stayed close until her death.

Wasn’t Elizabeth a lovely lady. I love seeing her walking round at her age. She loved life. Winston Churchill gave her a good talking too when her husband died. She wouldn’t go out, but he told her to live again, and after that she started to enjoy herself as she should have, living over 100. beautiful age I hope I live that long we only have one life and it goes so quickly. But in reality the dowager queen was far more stylish, in the true spirit of the word. Style is not about being pencil thin, or wearing the latest designer clothes. Nor indeed, is it about working hard to be considered stylish. Perish the thought! Elizabeth had great style because it was entirely her own, the result of developing her own, unique image over many years and knowing who she was. Above all, her style came from true inner confidence and self-esteem. Unlike Wallis who found herself alone, friendless and vulnerable to exploitation by her own staff after her husband's death, Elizabeth bloomed in widowhood. She was always fascinated by people, and cultivated a fascinating little black book of amusing friends who flocked to her regular lunch and dinner parties. Many glamorous and fascinating, celebrated names of the day featured, among them Cecil Beaton, Sir Noel Coward and Sir John Mills. Like everything else she did, the Queen Mother entertained lavishly and with high style.

The Queen Mother is one of few people who lived through the entire 20th Century, which lasted from 1 January 1901 to 31 December 2000. She is also one of few people who lived from the reign of Queen Victoria to the 21st Century.

She was unique and irreplaceable. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II were so very successful in a large part because of this Queen. When this lady was born the British monarch was Queen Victoria, the American President was William McKinley and Russia was ruled by Czar Nicholas II. She lived into the 21st century.
