Thanks for solving typewriter mysteries in real-time Duane. It looks like someone spilled their beverage on that machine, wiped the exterior, and thought they got away with it. The rust tells another tale!
I'm thinking this got wet and some water seeped into just some isolated spots, this had the puddle of rust in the bell, like water filled it while it was on it's back. maybe some trickled down into just the right spot near ratchet and seeped into shaft. Otherwise machine was in good condition.
Could you make a video on how to fix the backspace on a Royal typewriter? I keep running into that issue where the backspace won't catch it'll just wiggle but not not move backward. Thank you for the great videos.
Wow, didn't know you were going to the tractor pull that day, did ya? That was so bad, that afterwards, 'I' felt like I deserved a Beer! This is why they make a mini torch. Was this a customer's or one you picked up? Wish there was some back ground on this poor lil guy. Every machine I have or get, I type up a one page background for it using the machine itself, hoping that it stays with the machine to be a kind of voice so then the next owner will add to it. I would love to know what it would be like bing the 10th owner with 9 pages of history. I suppose I'll just have to imagine. If cared for these machines will last a lifetime multiple times. These were made to last back before someone had the idea of making something with parts that will break so you will need to replace. Although I hear if not used the Selectrics stop working and if used they stop working lol, I don't know, just something I heard somewhere, suppose that's true of any machine. Thanks for bringing us along with this one. Hope your Weekend is a good one!
I have this exact model, the platen seems to go up and down a millimeter or two at I turn it (to the point that the bottom left screw on the bailer is rubbing off some of the paint on on that left platen collar), and the paper doesn't seem to catch the bottom roller/s too well either sometimes, any ideas? I removed the platen, and thought that maybe the issue was the platen collar not sitting flush, so i made sure it seemed flush as I turned it in the air, and the small gap seemed perfectly even, the rod also came out easily, and it looked straight too, but even after reassembly, still platen seems to rise and fall evenly, and the bottom bailer screw hits the same bare spot on the left platen collar, too weird. Otherwise the machine is in great condition, kerning might be a bit tight but nothing that overly bothers me. (I was hoping to use this recent purchase while I sent my Underwood off for servicing).
Can I switch the platens on my 2 royal QDL (both same exact age and design as this one featured in the video) one is hard but elite. The other is soft but pica. I prefer the elite! Idk if these are interchangeable or had to be fitted to the individual machine. I would think they are able to swap out. Thanks!
