Go Mark Go!!!! Big congrats to you. So no more 5am trips in the snow? You will be so refreshed next time I see you :) And thanks to Jesse for sharing this awesome news with us all.
Superb Mark ! You deserve every success, admire your talent, tenacity and business savvy. More power to you. And Jesse, interesting you mentioned transitioning from video to music - I've been doing the same, working the BBC and other corporate clients and production companies. But I realised that freelance video production gives too much power away to unreliable clients and wanted to take responsibility for my creativity and income, hence working on building a synch library. Thanks to you both,.
@Mark Himley You’re welcome! Can I ask you a quick question? I’m brand new to this part of the business. During your most productive periods over the last few years, how many tracks a week were, or are you still cranking out? I’d really like my experience to mirror yours, but right now I’m lucky if I can get 2 tracks a week completed. Thanks in advance if you have a chance to reply.
Russell Szabados there’s lots of variables with that; it can vary wildly depending on the style and my schedule. I think 2 per week is a great place to be starting out! That’s about where I was when I started. Not counting drones, ambient, and tension music etc, which raises the average substantially, but when doing my *typical* styles I’m most productive around 4-5 tracks per week if all I’m doing is production music. I’ve done more when needed, but for me and my current lifestyle/situation it’s not sustainable long term. Tried that for awhile and became pretty miserable and burnt out. Hope that helps! Jesse has lots of good videos regarding this topic too
Mark Himley thank you for your reply! That helps a lot. My “default” styles, for lack of a better term are electronic (electro/pop, industrial dance & techno) and rock, those are what I write for myself. I’m starting to try my hand at blues and country. I want to add at least one more style to my repertoire without spreading myself too thin. I’m planning to join Jesse’s entry level group soon, probably within the next month or two. Maybe I’ll see you around in there. Thank you again for your time and all the best!
Dave Ramsey... nice. Great music and financial tips. One thing that makes it tough is not knowing what music libraries that are exclusive would be great
Arcadian Sounds yes exactly, Dave Ramsey’s teachings have been a huge part of my journey. Jesse has a great service for finding the right libraries, I’m sure he could give you the appropriate info and link
