This week we're looking at Royer Labs and the R-121 ribbon microphone. We'll take a dive into the history of David Royer and Royer labs (and briefly touch on Mojave Audio as well). The focus of this video is the R121 on electric guitar. Although it can be used on number of sources, our R121 pretty much lives in front of our guitar cabs. We'll be doing a deep dive into positioning the mic and giving a lot of examples of how it sounds in different places on the cabinet with the help of our @DynaMount X1R! We're also looking at our old friend impedance again, as proper impedance is KEY to getting this mic to sound its best. Bring your ear plugs, theres going to be a lot of heavy guitar.

R121 lover here as well. I also prefer to have one single mic on the guitar cab. Great video! Cheers

Thanks for checking out the videos. Really appreciate it! The 57/121 combo in this video was probably the best ive ever gotten it to sound... still not a huge fan of more mics on a source than need be.

Holy crap this was the best shootout i've seen on a guitar amp. Nobody I've watched takes the time to show something like the graph you've shown! Really gave me an idea of what this sounds like and I could clearly see what positioning that was. Very nice video my friend!

Thanks so much for checking it out. This was a complex one. I wish i could take credit for the graph thing, as its the interface for the Dynamount mic robot. Probably one of the best innovations in studio tech in a long time. It has its limitations but it saves so much time when recording guitars, and this video kind of outlines WHY. Same mic, same cab/amp and everything... just different placement and theres tons of different tones you can get just by moving it. I particularly like the back of the R121 for guitar as it has a little more bite (closer to that 121/57 combo sound but on its own). Thanks again for watching!

@@meistudiony I was really loving that front facing tone when it was a bit farther and center. I love the crunchy distortion it picks up while the meat of the guitar is still intact

I do like it a little further off the grille, you get more clear high end.

I really feel this comment. I was so sticker shocked initially... but its an investment, and even if you decide to sell it down the road, used, they're still going for around $1k, so you can still get something out of it. And if you buy it used, you can usually get your money back as long as its still in great shape, you just don't get that one free re-ribbon. Thanks for checking out the video! Appreciate it!

I was about to get rid of my mic collection... Including my R121/57 aligned by the purpose built gadget with the 'Royer' brand. Cause, semi-detached home with sucky sound isolation... Cause neighbours. Then I discovered 1x12 cabs... I can now hit that minimum threshold where my mics hear only my guitar cabs and not the drums in the track coming from my studio monitors, or even the physical sound of the strings being played with clean/no-drums parts... I still have to use a Rockcrusher attenuator to hit the sweet spot of Marshall/style amps, but that is another topic. With my switch from 2x12s to 1x12s (I have never been crazy enough to purchase a 4x12 in my situation...), I am noticing the loss of that 'authoritative' low end. With my R121 close to the speaker grill (between 2 and 3.5 inches between grill and R121's flange depending on how late it is at night basically...), the proximity effect on the R121 seems to give back some of that authoritative low end. Or perhaps, I am just fooling myself, and all I am getting is the unwanted woofiness of the proximity effect on the R121. I am not able to crank my amps high enough to accommodate a 5 inch(ish) or higher distance. I do a high-pass to all guitar parts at 100Hz, so I get rid of the worst part in my DAW. I would appreciate if you could please answer a few questions: - The closest you have placed the R121 seems to be 4.5 inches. Is that your recommended minimum? - If placed closer, say at 3 inches, do you think EQing in the DAW can mitigate the proximity effect, or in your opinion, does it degrade/muddy the tone in a non-recoverable way (mostly by smearing the rest of the frequency spectrum)? - If I wanted to use the R121 by itself, and use the back, what is your recommended minimum distance from grill to flange in that scenario? - I do record heavy guitars in stereo quite a bit (usually 'aided' by a TC electronic Mimiq doubler pedal and modest amounts of stereo delay and reverb)- if YOU were to do the same, would you go for two R121s (possibly even a matched pair?), or use something quite different on the second cab for a 'wider' sound stage maybe, or better stereo separation? Thanks so much - instant sub! THIS IS A FANTASTIC CHANNEL!

Hey thanks for watching! I've placed the royer closer than 4.5" (ive placed it ON the grill at times) it can handle the spl. Between 3-5" i've found to be a decent sweet spot for my particular setup on both the 4x12 cabinet and the vintage 30 1x12 cab i typically use in the studio. As far as the 1x12 not having the low end... you're not fooling yourself, its a thing. With a smaller cab, theres less air being moved and thus a little less "woof" from the cabinet/speaker combo. I've never heard an EQ smear anything, it seems to be one of those internet engineer terms that is loosely based on a physical facts and even less in practical use. Dan Worall did a great video on this whole thing (phase in eq). Using the back and front of the 121 is a minimal difference with the back having a little more top end (nothing an eq can't mimic). So, whatever you find works for the front will work for the back. We use the dynamount mic robot to find the right spot. mm make a BIG difference in tone. As far as recording heavy guitars... esp in stereo. Double track. Recording the same (a single) performance in stereo doesn't give a wide sound at all no matter what effects you put on it. Track 2 different takes,(playing the same parts usually) pan one left and one right. That will get you the widest and thickest sound with amazing separation. The little differences between the takes is what makes it sound huge, otherwise you're dealing with essentially dual mono. Any metal album I've ever worked on we've done this. Very rarely will I resort to using wideners or haas effect to make a mono source stereo. Keeping the mic setup in the same place will get you a consistent sound on the left and right channel, but sometimes i'll make slight changes (move the mic a few mm left or right or dial the gain back a hair) depends on the situation. For rhythm guitars, I will mostly leave the settings the same. If im double tracking leads... thats when i'll mess with settings a bit. Solos i usually just do in mono anyway and use some king of ping pong delay if i need to widen the sound out at all... usually treat it like another vocal part in mono though.

My goto for overheads is another ribbon mic, the R88 (ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EH7_NiTkiz0.html) (less than the cost of 2 R-121's) To me the 121 has an odd sculpted sound that doesn't sound good on drums. We recentlly looked at another good candidate, the Hohm HRP1 which, if I had a pair of, might dethrone my R88, however, im really happy with the mono HRP1 as a room mic. Just did a drum session last night with it, and it came out incredible. The 121, for my money, is a great close ribbon (mic'd at less than 3' from source). Never really loved it on anything that's mic'd further back (over heads, room, etc.) The R88 excels at the far field ribbon thing and I feel the Hohm does as well. (they have a blumlein stereo mic as well, but honestly, I would probably get two mono mics, so much more you can do with a split pair).

I was looking at that mic. I think a $200 up charge for a transformer and paint job is a little much. But I'll see what I can do.

@@klauth_Yksyn I have one coming in next week. ;) I think ill put it through its paces with the 121 and my home built ribbon mic that looks crazy similar to the R10, except it was built probably 10/11 years ago.
