In my continuing quest to improve the sound quality of the videos, I bought this Royer Labs R-10 Hot Rod ribbon mic.
Let's see how it does by itself and paired with a trusty SM57.
USE REAL SPEAKERS OR HEADPHONES!

I enjoy the demonstrations. Making music sound good is a lot harder than I ever imagined. Thank you for the education of the science of sound Sir.

Yeah mics and especially ribbon mics are a fun thing to experiment with. Ribbons tend to be some of my favorite mics. They just sound the most natural to me. Condensers tend to be "too real" especially in the highs. And some dynamics seem to lack some realism and detail in the highs. Where ribbons are normally kind of in the middle.

The proximity effect of the R-10 was very evident as it moved closer. That's quite useful.

It’s cool if you want more bass in your recording, just move mic closer instead of messing with tone controls. Problem is everyone defaults to microphone immediately on grille cloth, so there’s no where to go.

Both sound really nice. I used a 57 on a gooseneck stuck under the amp handle when playing live...never let me down. Thanks for another informative video Lyle.

Great demo - thanks! The R-10 HR sounds really great, which should be expected considering the price. Yet I'm surprised how the SM 57 still holds its own, especially as comes at about 10 per cent of the price (at least over here in Germany). When soloed, one can tell the difference. Whether or not the same is true when it's buried in the mix, is a different story...

Thanks for this demo. I've been considering the R10 or R10 Hot Rod as my next mic purchase.

I liked the R-10 about 8 inches from the speaker, early in your video. Of course, you really can't go wrong with an SM-57 on a guitar amp.

I just got a Coles 4038 as my first ribbon mic. Capturing these sounds is a fun rabbit hole. I’ll eventually pick up a Royer, and I’m looking forward to seeing more of your tests with this one. Thanks for sharing!

The R10 sounds really good super nice in combination with the 57. Cool to hear all the different positions moving mics around can really make or brake the sound. I just spent a lot of money on a really nice LDC stereo pair and now I wish I had some ribbons to. Microphones are addictive. Good stuff

I think that's a great choice in microphone for cabs, I use one myself! Ive even done some recording with an acoustic and its sounds pretty darn good all by itself!! Such a thick sound from the Royer!! My favourite would be @ 01:38 and maybe its because of that riff at 1:45, WHOA! sounds amazing!!! Tastey Licks!!! Thanks for sharing your recodings!! Lots of editing too!

I really like the R10 at 4 inches sounds well balanced. I hope you try a humbucker, or did you and I just can't tell, sounds great. Great content as usual thanks Lyle.

Nice! My R10 hasn't seen daylight in quite a while, maybe I should get it out for a bit. I was multi miking cabs, but moved away from it, maybe I got lazy. I start thinking about ribbons and start looking at an AEA R88 🧐

Kind of a tangent comment, but still cab mic related. I wonder how the AEA R92 compares to the Royer 121?

Just wondering Lyle, as you are the only one here who hears the amp unrecorded, do you notice anything particular in the difference between the live amp sound and what the mics ‘do’ to the recorded tone? How true to what you hear live is the recorded track? (I am assuming your goal is to get as near to parity as poss.) Cheers and thanks again for great content! ;))
@PsionicAudio
@PsionicAudio 10 месяцев назад
Thanks Kevin. Of these, the 4” R-10 by itself and the last clip with both mics are the closest to how the amp sounds in the room, though I think I can get it better still.
@PsionicAudio
@PsionicAudio 10 месяцев назад
I also think when you hear other amps and parts that aren’t Tele bridge you’ll hear more of interest. That’s an upper mids-focused sound and both mics handled those mids similarly.

Ouuuu, another ribbon mic I can accidentally fry with phantom power… cuz, I’m stupid like that! :) That’s a great sounding mic! :)
@WonkeyWabbit
@WonkeyWabbit 10 месяцев назад
You are only likely to fry very old vintage ribbon mics with phantom power. Any modern ribbon won't be harmed by phantom power.

Can be if you have patch bays etc, but not in regular use.

I like it, it sounds really good to me. I'm surprised you think the R-10 is brighter sounding than the R-121, as the R-10 frequency response falls off a bit above 5kHz (by about 3dB), whilst the 121 stays flat up to about 10kHz and falls away far less in the upper frequency ranges. But the R-10 does have slightly less bass roll-off, so a slightly fuller low-end. Being a fig-8 mic, the proximity effect is more pronounced that a cardioid like an SM57, so adjusting the distance from the grille allows a bit more fine-tuning of the lows. A quick way to position two mics for phase alignment is to pass a pink noise signal through the amp, flip the polarity of one of the mics and move one relative to the other to get the deepest null you can get (different frequency responses means you'll never get silence). You'll need to do this wearing closed-back headphones, though you don't need the amp to be loud for this method.
@PsionicAudio
@PsionicAudio 10 месяцев назад
I’m going by my memory of the R-121 which was stolen many years ago. The R-10 seems to have more happening in the upper mids. But that’s against a remembered impression. I know the pink noise trick and for a critical recording I’ll do that. For these first tests I wanted to see how they’d do just eyeballing the diaphragm/ribbon. The waveforms said it was close to perfect and the summing had no oddities. But the pink noise thing is a great tip. Some of the figure 8 stuff I can’t take advantage of in this bad sounding room. You can hear the room in the 12” and 8” clips (being six inches above a hardwood floor didn’t help).

Well, kinda. He has the R-122V, which is a $4K mic. Running into very expensive mic pres. But I think he’d be fine with this humbler setup too.

How do you like R10 compared to the 121? I have a 121 & I don't always love it. We do a lot of down tuning & the 121 is a touch too thick at times? Would love some feedback from this with experience!

@@PsionicAudio thank you for the reply on this! I thought your demo sounded fantastic. I think it's possible that this mic is a touch clearer or brighter than the 121. I really dug what you did & am thinning l thinking about get one to try!

Stay tuned for other amps/speakers. The 57 is great but it has some weaknesses. Those areas are the strengths of the R-121 so I want to know how this less expensive R-10 does in that role.

If you haven't done it already, try making a "tent" with a thick blanket covering your amp and mic to isolate them from room reflections. Room acoustics can make or break the recorded sound from any microphone, cheap or expensive.
