Nice to see a shoutout to DF! It kept a lot of us feeling like we had co-conspirators before the OSR launched... The late 90s/early 2000s were a lonely time for grogs.

There were only 5000 Silver Anniversary sets!? Damn. My mom got me one as part of my high school graduation present in that same year. I knew it was a really valuable gift, but I didn't realize just how much. I still have it somewhere in storage with all the modules, but I think I may have lost some of the other sheets and bits over time. That set was also the first time I actually owned any published modules. I knew of modules from friends who owned some (my longtime group had a copy of Sabre River and Eye of the Serpent, though I have no idea who bought them originally and when), but I didn't acquire an appreciation for them until after I read the ones in this box set - including this one, White Plume Mountain and I6 Ravenloft. Funny enough, I was (still am) a HUGE fan of the Ravenloft setting for years; my first DM in '95-'96 sold me his box set of Ravenloft and Dark Sun.

this seems like a real quiet gem, and has a total Mines Of Moria feel from LOTR. methinks I shall give it a look!

This module was THE reason that I bought the Silver Anniversary set. For the reasons you mentioned, I was disappointed in the module, though I did locate the rest of the modules in the series. Thank You for the review.

A few years back I ran my 1e group through the Lendore trilogy. They handled Bone Hill well, got through the Assassin's Knot with only a casualty or two... rolled up to the Dungeon in L3, promptly said 'nope' and turned around and left. So, I haven't quite properly run it yet! 🤣

I enjoyed your review. I ran this over the last three months. I think we played about 6 5 hour sessions in 5e/castles & Crusades ruleset. I agree the map was terrible with a hard to use scale and lazily drawn. The top level was very interesting with some good rp opportunities. Middle level was a linear drag. The bottom level was interesting and deadly. If the maps were redone with some modern sensibilities better design this would be greatly improved. My group and myself gave it a C.

Great review and glad to hear this is in POD now. I have one comment though - you mentioned that the unusual map scaling made it difficult for serious mappers but it was adequate for theater of the mind. Those two things are not in opposition. I played theater of the mind almost exclusively for decades but almost always made maps as well. Theater of the mind generally refers to not using miniatures and tactical maps for combat it doesn’t necessarily exclude drawing dungeon maps.

hi capt-c...i never played any of these, but this L-series looks pretty good! i love how there are two towns in it, and they have a historic relationship and that the players are expected to get to know the inhabitants. it's neat how it starts with a sandbox kind of like "Keep" (except the people in the town are more detailed and important to the overall campaign), followed by a different kind of adventure not seen very often (a mystery with intrigue), and then a traditional "adventure site" that could be placed in any campaign (if you change the hook). I would think that you could substitute some other adventure site module (for the mine) that would have the villain in it. To me, it seems like this L series could be a good education for a new DM because it has two example towns, well-developed npcs, and three kinds of adventures (sandbox, mystery, and adventure site). plus it seems to me that L1 + L2 would be worth it just for the two towns and their npcs, which you could loot and use elsewhere!! that gives it a final rating of: "neat-o."

Loved Bone Hill. Very nice Sand Box begging to be expanded. We could never Make the Assassin's Knot work. Played it once and ran it once and ended up chasing the PC's off the Lendore Islands. I like L-3 though it does feel like a copy of every Dwarven mine story I've read in TSR and or JG modules.
@Lightmane
@Lightmane 2 года назад
@@biffstrong1079 I didn't care for it all that much. I still don't know what the adventure is actually about, lol, though it's been decades since I looked at it, but I've watched some reviews of it and still haven't a clue, other than everything is really far away from Restenford, which made no sense to me. Love the town though, but if you know what the 'secret' is, let me know. Thanks : )
@biffstrong1079
@biffstrong1079 2 года назад
@@Lightmane Okay the dwarven Delve Secret was the Classic Dwarves Delve too deep find a portal to hell get corrupted and involved in the invocation of some LE Devils/CE Demons which has happened to Dwarves since Tolkein. Honestly seems like the only thing that happens to dwarves aside from dragons stealing their Hordes. Prepping L3 as a one shot I built a slightly bigger Lendore Island map and had the dwarven mine a day or two away from Restenford. Bone Hill had a nice wilderness set up with a variety of interesting encounters some fighty, some Talky. The town is fleshed out and gives you opportunity to role play. Seth actually gives a better summary than I could ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-kvzcLJUeFAw.html Lot of Unique Magic Items and fun encounters in the Actual Bone Hill dungeon which had a nice split ecology, night and day. Seth actually offers an actual "Secret" that dovetails nicely with Restenford. The secret in the actual module is there are monsters on Bone Hill. Not that big a secret really. My plan if I ever use these three in a campaign on the Lendore Islands would be to have an expanded map and try to do some role play in Garroteton to lay ground work for the Assassin's Knot. Then its a quick Hop from Restenford out to the Isle of Dread. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-E371f5pHrXU.html I would say the magic items and the number and variety of encounters really made the module fun, though I will say the Gem of True Seeing caused a lot of troubles for the DM in future Adventures. My pc's loved the items, feared the fireball, gambled at the CN temple, played darts at Falco's tavern and could have done much much more. Probably too much treasure handed out in this one but many of my party's favourite magic items come from this module.
@Lightmane
@Lightmane 2 года назад
@@biffstrong1079 the gambling was fun, but I don't really know why it's there. Lots of great stuff in the module though, no doubt. Just lacks an actual plot. B2 is my favorite, and of course G1-G3. We had a blast playing those, even though the plot wasn't developed as well as it could've been, but that's the job of the DM, so I get why Gary wrote them the way he did. I cut the treasures in half though : )
@biffstrong1079
@biffstrong1079 2 года назад
@@Lightmane B2 was the first I ever played first I ever Dmed. Ran my Niece and nephews through it two years ago using a Cave of the Unknown Concept map my brother put together in 1976. I could DM this one in my sleep and enjoy it. I do think the Random CN temple is kind of on the nose for L1. We loved the Giants though the party got tired of fighting rooms full of trolls by the third module.

Thanks for the review. Went through L1 as a player (with a weak DM), and never went through L2, but even so I am very fond of both those modules. *SPOILERS* My issue with L3 is that it only has the slimmest of connections to the previous two. 'Town officials' recruit the party to take on the Delve. Heck, that could be Arrness and Tellish if the same party went through L2 and failed to prevent the assassinations. L3 is a disappointment for me personally because it doesn't acknowledge any of the backstory that occurs with L1 and L2. No mention of Pelltar?! The town of Restenford was laid out in thorough details in L1, yet is only utilized in name with Deep Dungeon Delve. My copy of L1 is not handy, but if I recall correctly one of Restenford's residents is a female Ranger. Is she the same one who first found the Delve? Just seems lazy to me that no better connections could be made between L3 and L1/L2. It's almost like Mr. Lakofka created the adventure without thinking of The Secret of Bone Hill and The Assassins Knot, and then afterwards decided to put it near Restenford out of convenience. Just my opinions. Setting aside that issue, full disclosure, I haven't ever played or DM'd L3. While reading through it three years ago I recall thinking "Damn, this would be very challenging for the levels recommended. It's a good thing the party DOES have a place like Restenford to fall back to!" My copy of L3 is packed away also, but I also remember that the level 3 gateway spits out a fairly formidable monster every two rounds or so. If I was to DM this I would slow the rate of them appearing. Again, thanks for the review.
