(1 Mar 1971) RR7109A REGGIO: THE REVOLT THAT FAILED
In Reggio di Calabria in Southern Italy, eight months
of rioting have for the moment come to an end with
thousands of armed troops and police in control of
the city. At least six people have died, hundreds have
been injured, and property worth thousands of
dollars destroyed during the town's revolt against a
decision to make the rival town of Catanzaro the new
regional capital of Calabria. Reggio's revolt has to be
seen against the wider background of poverty and
backwardness in southern Italy and the policies
needed to solve its chronic problems.
