(2 Sep 1971) RR7135A SOUTH AFRICA: BANDA'S HISTORIC VISIT
In mid 1971 President Hastings Banda of Malawi
completed an official visit to South Africa, the first
black Head of State ever to do so. In Pretoria, the visit
was seen as a vindication for Prime Minister Vorster's
"outward policy", designed to forge economic and
political links with the black states to the north and so
undermine African opposition to apartheid. We follow
Dr. Banda on his tour and take a brief look at conditions
in Malawi itself.
