(2 Jan 1978) RR7801A INDEPENDENCE FOR BOPHUTATSWANA
It is more than a year since the first of the South
African tribal homelands was granted 'independence'
in line with Pretoria's policy for separate development,
better known as Apartheid. Still, the Transkei waits to
be accepted by the world as a nation in its own right.
Now, a second homeland has been given its freedom
- Bophutatswana. Like Transkei, Bophutatswana will
also have to wait to be recognised as a sovereign
state. Its dependence on South Africa is so complete,
and its territory so scattered amidst South African
land, that recognition may be a long time coming.

Commentary is misleading, Bophuthatswana had arable land, and was a much more functional state. It only deteriorated post 94.

It also had many natural resources! Bophuthatswana was the richest of the TBVC-states as it had platinum mines, which accounted for two-thirds of the total platinum production in the Western world. It was also rich in asbestos, granite, vanadium, chromium and manganese. Additional revenues came from the Sun City casino, which was a day trip from Johannesburg and Pretoria, where gambling was illegal under the National Party government, as it was throughout all of South Africa. But it's true that only 10% of Bophuthatswana's total land area was arable, and much of that was covered with scrub bush. Overall you could say that Bophuthatswana was a _"success story",_ compared to that of the other Bantustans. They even had an embassy in Israel. Even though they didn't officially recognize it as an independent country. The president of Bophuthatswana even tried to stop the reintegration of Bophuthatswana into the mainland in 1994, by force and with the support of Afrikaner nationalist. It's the only case were Apartheid in the sense of separate development did work, to some degree.

@@kabzaifyAgreed. I grew up in Bophuthatswana, my grandfather and relatives lived in Botswana proper. The politics are different, Herman Mashaba, who grew up in Hammanskraal which was under Bop, formed a political party (ActionSA) and Lucas Mangope's grandson is a member of this party, perhaps we must start from there and advocate for federalism if not separate development again in South Africa. This will allow communities to have full autonomy almost similar to the homelands but with our own constitution. I long for the good ole days when public infrastructure was properly maintained, roads, clinics, stadiums, electricity and a functional police force 😔 Edit: And why is this anc government cutting diplomatic relations with Israel? I remember Mangope meeting Moshe Idal in Israel 😭😭

My parents grew up in Bophutatswana and have fond memories of a functional, thriving society with top schools, hospitals, law and order and government institutions under Mangope, regardless of his undeniable issues and the rampant racism and Apartheid system underpinning everything.. The depiction of the place as a backwards village and the latent racist commentary is just a symptom of the day, I suppose. My grandmother still lives there, and it's a pity to see what's become of the place...

Remember that the ANC government when they gained power has built other Provence's expect the north west. They have not developed our land because of the pride and prejudice they hold. But it's subjective because farm land is owned by black and white people now, the mines in Rustenburg are sold to foreign companies. The gold mines that have depleted in klerksdorp are foreign owned. We in the north west have nothing left but hope the legacy of the ANC (social grants and 350) I would say it's a blatant insult to the Tswana people.
@DP-ho9if
@DP-ho9if 6 месяцев назад
@@HOLO_FXBefore they deposed and persecuted Mangope, they could have known they wouldn't be able to maintain the infrastructure built by Mangope government, and left him to continue his administration because he had capacity. Now, this anc has neglected the infrastructure and people are drinking choleric water due to mismanagement of our taxes, even the anc Premier of North West doesn't want to be treated in a local hospital. True, we're being insulted as batswana. If we didn't have 50 000 "public servants" that are millionaires, we would be getting R1500 instead of R350. This legacy is a failure.

If only the white South African government consolidated the area and given economic assistance then it could've still been independent til now. Look at Lesotho all landlocked so why not?

Exactly, Bophuthatswana could've now been an autonomous community like Andalusia or an independent state like Lesotho. Sometimes, I just hate the United Nations. Edit: I believe communities like Orania should be supported and be given the right to self determination, away from the anc that wants to do-away with Afrikaans and afrikaaner culture.

They needed more time. The Bantustan project was still in it's infancy in 1994. If given time then the project could have been made to work, you don't start a new country and expect a miracle in less than 30 years.

I remember that in the town museum there was a replica of the Standard Bank dugout used during the siege of Mafeking, and I remember the railway yards, I had hopes for the place even though it was a perverted creation of the Republic of South Africa. The correct spelling of the name of the place is Bophuthatswana, not Bophutatswana.

It was a blessing indeed, neglected by the ANC. Diedericks et al could have made Bophutatswana a federal state within South Africa, not an independent state. However, I commend the gentlemen in the NP for pulling this off, they were genius, I have lots of memories. The ANC was jealous of Mangope for getting recognition from the "state government", especially the anti progressive Mandela. Presently, the residents of Bophutatswana are being bullied and insulted by the same ANC that overthrew Mangope. Crime has skyrocketed and the stadiums that you're seeing in this report are neglected and falling apart.

i always remember if u were travelling from Botswana to Mmabatho you had to go through 4 border posts....leaving Botswana, entering SA, leaving SA, entering Bophuthatswana, crazy. There was also a song released I think on the 10th anniversary of "independence" called something like "Bophuthatswana, I wanna go" that featured a European singer taking in the sites and sounds of Bop...really typical 80s cheese fest haha but I've never been able to locate the song/singer online. It was quite a catchy tune though.

Bophutatswana is a missed opportunity for all blacks in South Africa and more especially Batswana. Patrice Motsepe who started his mining ventures while he lived in Mmakau, could have opened doors for many aspiring businessmen and women of Bop. Mangope liberalised the economy within the homeland, hence people like Motsepe flourished.
