Five minutes for gaff nerds, today's topic: Scandalizing the mainsail: With easy, safe and fast increase or reduction of mainsail power, RS1CA sails from anchor to harbor without any use of auxiliary propulsion. Remember, time is always your best friend when maneuvering under sail.

Enjoyed your video and impressed by mooring under sail, albeit in light conditions. I also loved the anchor winch, which of course was tiny compared to the winch on a Baltic trader I sailed on in the Med; it was the size of a small car. My father, the legendary Mike Hoare, had a similar but smaller Colin Archer type yacht, 36 foot, gaff rigged ketch, in Durban South Africa for quite a number of years in the 1960s. She was named Colin Archer, and was built in Risor, Norway in 1937 by Moen and Nilsen. Apparently she is back in Risor again, not sure. Sturdy boats from another era speak of tradition, craftsmanship and of course they ooze adventure. And how we love them! Regards, Chris Hoare

Lovely video. Ghosting into a marina with a boat that size takes a lot of confidence.

@@eplevelsen I would be really interested in a video of you heaving to. Particularly the role of the mizzen.

Hello Tor, Very interesting video. I am learning a lot. Much appreciated. I bought Emma the CA built in Holland and have taken her to Germany where I live. As far as I can see she is authentically rigged as per the original boats. On the trip back we were intrigued by (almost assaulted by the hook) the single topping lift from the the top of the mizzen for the main boom. I am tempted to change it to more conventional double lifts. Maybe I am missing something. I just wondered if you have any thoughts on the matter? Should the topping lift be detached when under way? Thanks any advice greatly appreciated.

Good to hear about Emma, great boat. The rigs is more or less the same measurements. Look carefully into the details on the differences. About topping lifts, generally adaptable for all ketch gaff rigs, our number 1 topping lift is from the mizzen top. We ALWAYS disconnect this after setting the peak. (The former owners of Emma did this, see woodenships.co.uk/sailing-yacht/colin-archer-gaff-ketch-4/) This has of course a great advantage, as it is never in conflict with the mainsail, but also a disadvantage, as you always will have to remember to connect topping lifts before you scandalize. But the advantage is far greater than the disadvantage. Nevertheless, this mizzen topping lift system has another disadvantage: What do you do when you need to lift the boom for scandalizing in strong downwinds? For this, we have a second option for topping lift, using our topsail halyard. This halyard is of course available in the situation of scandalizing, as the topsail is on deck. The advantage for using this, is 1) Less ropes in the mast (no traditional topping lifts), 2) it runs from the very top of the main mast, to the very end of the boom, makes the gaff, in scandalized position, able to select side of the topping lift. This comes in very handy when sailing downwind in very strong winds, and you will need to scandalize to reduce power on your way to port, or to jib safely. Under very strong winds, we always jib with scandalized main, to avoid serious force on the rig. The gaff will swing under the topsail halyard/topping lift, and easily being peaked in leeward. In this case, there will of course be now force on the mizzen top. Just ask if anything was unclear. Tor

@@eplevelsen so good to see the old ( better) ways of sailing and seamanship kept alive for the current plastic boat ,gps guided auxiliary equipped sailors to strive for.

Nydelig : ) Synd det ikke ble filmet helt in til kai for det ville vært en sensasjon : )
