Love the RSI Smartcap. I just wish those little inset side windows had fine mesh screens on them, either built in or an optional attachable/detachable version.
Great overview of the smart cap. After searching for the past two years, I’ve finally found one for my Ram 3500. You did a great job explaining how and why it’s built the way it is. I’ve noticed that many people don’t fully appreciate the features of this great cap.
I’ve watched a few videos on this cap and yours is definitely the best. I just picked one up used from a buddy selling his truck. Unfortunately the Chevy Colorado does not have the top window for the third brake light/ cargo light
This video helped me decide on my setup. I'm getting the same one, with a rooftop tent. The fact that the shell can hold up to 700lb saves space for other equipment. Most setups I've seen have open racks which I don't like. Very good video thanks.
If you want a real epic trip, when the border opens again, if it ever does, take the Alaska highway up to Dawson in the Yukon and then the new Dempster highway extension right up to Tuktoyaktuk on the Arctic Ocean
Nice video enjoyed some of the ideas you have. I too am turning my truck into an Overland vehicle and I bought the same canopy as you. The only thing I don’t like about mine is the locks I am really not fond of them they’re really quite finicky and the fact that I live in the Rocky Mountains in Canada during the winter time they are a real pain. It is my only criticism of the EVO smart cap. Looking at your video from what I could say I did not see any bad stiffeners this might be something you may wish to look into I got mine from total chaos I don’t know if they make that stiffeners for the type of truck you have however if you’re putting a lot of weight on the roof there is a chance overtime your truck box will spread the stiffeners will prevent this ,they also work as extra tie down points as well. Interesting spot for your dual air compressor I put mine in the engine bay. Looking forward to seeing what else you guys do with the truck.

Great vid! What are your thoughts on installing an RV type air conditioner in the roof for pups? If a lithium setup could be McGuyver’d to run it, would the roof support the weight? Thanks!
I’d like to hear from ya on a long term review. Only because the long term (1yr) review of a customer who bought one for his Tacoma said it unfortunately leaks. If water gets in I’m sure dust can as well. It’d be nice info as topper’s aren’t cheap and I want to put a Prinsu rack to extend my cab Prinsu rack and load kayaks/whatever evenly from front to back. I would like it to be water tight though. Maybe leer or ARE. I’m up in the air still.

Just bought my RSI cap, installing next week, appreciate your overview. I live in Oregon, where about half of the state is high desert and over half is public land, thus a great place to overland, Let me suggest the Owyhee Canyonlands as a very worthy destination to explore: Epic landscape, rivaled only by the Four Corners area; very empty and wild, more than 2.5 million acres of wilderness quality lands; many fun, and a few “good” roads! We call it ION country, for Idaho/Oregon/Nevada corner. Have fun out there! Insider pro tip: find your way to ANderson Crossing at the head of Louse Canyon.

@@davelong4131 so far it's perfectly dry, and amazingly dust free. One lock froze but decicer fixed it, and then I lubricated all six as soon as it was above freezing. Couldn't be happier with it!
I’ve been doing some research and the only topper I’ve found with a cutout for the brake light and cargo camera is the SmartCap. Have you found any other topper that offers a similar feature?
Thanks for the video. Looking at a similar product on a similar truck, but worried about garage clearance (only have 82") to work with. I know a stock 2020-2022 Lariat will fit in my garage (just barely), so wondering if the roof of the RSI canopy (or the air inlet which I believe is the highest point) is higher than the two black plastic boxes on the back of the cab?
Hi Jsn! Our car wash is 84” and it fits in there with several inches to spare. Make sure you check/measure the very back of your truck too since that will be it’s highest point. Good luck! 👍🏻
I just installed my smartcap on my f150 6.5 box and I’m interested to know what led lights you installed and how you connected them to your bed light button?
There are a lot of RU-vid videos with many complaints about the RSI Smart Cap, water intrusion, poor seals, locks freezing up, etc. Do some research prior to spending your hard earned money. I believe the RLD is of much better quality though it's expensive. Some people reported that the Rhino cap was also a good cap.
seems cool until the locks freezes up during winter. they should've made a rubber seal to hide the locks and latches. How easy is it to remove the cover since it's modular?
Can you have a bed spray or is it better for it to be bare to put the carpet you installed? Does it even matter? Also consider that I am living in the coast, if that matters. Thanks
Great video! What's the distance from the truck bed to bottom of window opening? Trying to figure out if I can use a drawer system and still fit my dog kennel in the back. Any help would be appreciated! Thank you

Just an idea of what I am going to do to my truck I was planning to put my rooftop tent on the roof of the truck and get an RSI smart rack and put that on the canopy it would make loading and unloading gear much easier I don’t know if you’ve seen this product also I’m waiting for my RSI smart table to I don’t know if it’s better for you guys down in the states were here in Canada were really waiting on stuff all the time.
Thanks for you comments Russell! And good ideas too. Our smartcap took about 4 weeks from the time it was ordered. We’re having the same problem in the USA as well for goods and products for all industries.
On that freezing day where the locks for the Smart Cap freezed up, could you still open the truck bed? If you can still open the truck bed then that's still a win for this RSI Smart Cap overall. This set up is awesome.

I've got a 2021 Carbonized Grey F250 Tremor and looking to purchase the Smartcap as well. Would love to see a full walk around video where we can better see how it looks on the truck.
To be honest it’s not the best topper for dogs if it’s hot outside. When we drive with our dogs the wind helps but we bring them inside our truck if it’s above 78 degrees or so when driving. If the dogs are just hanging out in the truck and it’s relatively warm we leave the back window open for them for more cross breeze and ventilation. If you were parked with dogs in the back on a hot day I don’t think the sliders would provide enough ventilation. You have to be very careful in the heat. On the other hand if it’s cold outside our puppers do stay warm because it is so well insulated. Hope this helps
How would one wash the rear window of one’s truck. My leer has a front glass that folds down. Snug top front glass has an option of gas struts and lift up along the roof. I have a tundra. Granted a cap sort of does a way with the (in my opinion) huge benefit of the tundra’s roll down real glass but at least I can clean it and if I want I can fold down the caps front glass and roll down the tundras rear glass…

QUESTION : If you were to get inside the RSI cap to go to sleep ; and you closed the cap hatch door ; if someone walked past and pushed the cap hatch locks in to lock the hatch ; would you be locked inside or can you unlock the cap hatch from inside the cap ?
You mentioned you had challenges with the latches freezing. We are in a very cold climate as well, latches freezing in very cold weather sounds not great, is this constantly issue for you? Or how did you resolve this issue?
Hello Todd! The locks freezing was not a constant issue for us. When it gets -5 below or colder it was a challenge. I think we just put a cup of hot coffee near the locks/wiggled it a little bit and it was fine. All winter long in Minneapolis it happened just once.
I am curious and did not see the question posted in the comments, when raining could the back hatch and the side panels be propped open to allow ventilation without any water intrusion into the truck bed area. I know with my Leer rain would channel down into the bed if the back hatch was open any and when camping inside if it rained during the summer it was sweltering hot.
If it’s raining you have to close everything up. I suppose you could open the side windows a little but rain could still get in… I feel like there is nothing perfect in the truck topper world! Make sure you see our shorts on the smartcap too… we’ve had issues with locks in cold weather and extreme heat in the summer.
I wonder, if you are sleeping inside the RSI covered bed with all the windows pulled closed, is the seal so tight that you would run out of oxygen, do you have to leave a window open or cracked in that case?

Hey Mavrik Mavrik! The cap has been great after a few years of use. No leakage whatsoever. Our only issues are the locks freezing when it’s really cold, you cannot lock or unlock from the inside and the inside can get very hot in the summer months. If you have pets be very careful about this.

@@jeda35 you would have to have someone lock the windows from the outside to get stuck inside. I suppose you could reach through the sliders or the one that’s closest to the slider to unlock it... glad you liked the video! ;)
What about your rear view mirror camera? Did you just decide you didn’t care for that feature on your truck any more? Can you get that camera wired to the taillight on the cap and have a different camera added?
Do you mean the back up camera? If so, our back up camera is on our tailgate so it continues to work as normal :) Let me know if I answered your question or not! :)
@@KCandtheOverlanders I visited US (from Nepal) two years ago. I took Amtrak Empire Builder from Washington DC to Chicago to Seattle. We passed through Minneapolis which was very beautiful.
Sad thing is no one has these in stock. 12 weeks lead time or more. This is even before the pandemic. Unacceptable. Can’t see one in person, but pay in advance. I don’t think so. They ask premium pricing for these. Unless dealers stock these for popular trucks it will only be a niche
750# topper? No Wonder you went with F-350 but now you're "overlanding" in a 1 ton? gross. I just ditched a 3/4 ton because I hate how it felt off road. Did the tremor suspension help? well done video though
