Came across your channel whilst researching for a GS, have to say your videos are really well thought out, as are your reviews. Thanks for taking the time & effort to make these video's, they're a brilliantly constructive resource.
Just came back to this review to say thank you Andy. I started riding about 3 years ago and was trying to find the best value gear I could find when I was new and needed to buy everything at once. I took your advice and got this suit. Just finished around 25,000 km’s or so with it. I rode it in all weathers though swapped it out to some cooler gear in peak summer. I also usually chucked a water proof outter layer over it when I knew it’d be wet. But it did a fantastic job. After all the time and KM’s it was only a couple of Velcro tabs that were starting to fray (it got used for commuting 9 months of the year, so a lot of on and off). It also did very well in the slide I had at the weekend. Hit the ground at 80km down hill, so a long slide and whilst the outter layer did wear through in a couple of places, it didn’t wear through to my skin. Only weakness was that there’s a single stitched seam right on the knee so that tore apart fairly well, but again didn’t actually wear through to me. Just upgraded to a rev’it sand 4, but yeah, so long adventure pro 3! You served me well! And yeah, agree on the warm in winter. Thermal liner and waterproof outter layer and I could comfortably ride down to -2C and much below that you have to start worrying about ice and snow anyways. Thanks again Andy!
had a crash last month and decided to treat myself to a new jacket for christmas, had the blade 2 textile jacket before and now i've got this, zips perfectly on to my RST leather trousers so looking forward to trying out this jacket when i'm allowed back on the bike in a few weeks. i would have bought the trousers too but i hate textile trousers and i already had the blade leather trousers. top notch content as always, keep it up and hope you and Mrs Flyer had a merry christmas.
Just Got my Pro Series Adventure-X Textile Jacket from The Visor Shop Great service. WOW, I so impressed with the construction and technology in this jacket. The engineering is amazing, to get all the layers to fit correctly and still be functional and comfortable is nothing sort of a truly professional product.
Was just looking at these kits and wondered what they was like being not that expensive like others. You have sold the kit to me, wicked review and you have a new subscriber 👌
Would be nice if the following were clarified: 1. is the neck liner soft, does it keep wind buffer off your neck ? 2. Proper road test while wearing these on a bike in rain preferably 3. Feedback after a few road trips 4. does the jacket hook up to the trousers ? 5. more detailed commentary on fitting on both, e.g. how much room you have in case you were wearing a fleece underneath jacket and same for trousers
I've had the Adventure 2 kit now for a few years and agree it is great for the price. A few issues though. The neck collar velcro isn't long enough, same at the cuffs, so mine keeps popping open. The throat coat works great and I hated it at first. My jacket even came with a separate buff style neck warmer. The bottom popper studs disintegrated after over a years use, but no issues as the Pro series stuff has a 2 year guarantee, so back to the shop and replaced in under 2 weeks. My trousers have the full panels and not just slits. I would definitely buy the Adventure 3 kit if need be and my local bike shop is doing a jacket and trouser deal at £380. :) p.s. When washing and reproofing, don't reproof the liners as you will slide around on the seat from the inside of the trousers, sounds weird, but trust me.
Just watched a couple of your videos and great job! I am in Sydney riding gs1200 LC and speed trip. Agree on the rst clothing....just fits great and very warm in our Aussie winter! Keep posting them....loved the r9 racer....mmm
I've got a similar detachable collar in my Dainese jacket and they really are amazing! I'm currently on the hunt for new trousers. My old HG Sheltex ones leak now, and it's not from lack of proofing. I'm looking first at Dainese D Dry which appears to be of a similar ilk to the RST with membranes and vents, but being slim with long legs, finding a long enough fit can be a challenge. So a timely review and I'll certainly give RST a look over. Not in a hurry to swap out my Dainese Carve Master jacket, I think that's a very nice tidy good looking jacket. Cheers!
Thanks for doing such an informative review. I'm fortunate enough to live close enough to Sports Bike Shop that I can call in, so last weekend I spent a couple of hours there trying on new kit and finally settled on the RST Adventure 3 (with the orange highlights, because the plain black is on back order for 5 weeks and I'm not patient enough). One question for you: have you found that it's softened up or become a bit more flexible with wear? The cordura is a more rigid material than my last kit was, but even so I find it especially stiff around the top of the arms and back of the knees. There's plenty of material there, it's not tight, just a bit inflexible. It's a pretty minor niggle but thought I'd see what your experience is.
Err, no, it is a pretty stiff bit of kit - I actually prefer the original adventure kit (the Mark 1) that I have - alas it's now pretty worn - over this latest incarnation, the fit on the new stuff isn't so good and the velcro neck thing can get uncomfortable (not to mention I don't like the word "Adventure" written all over it + the padded shoulders catch your helmet on a shoulder check). Other than that - thoroughly recommended! Great value and as I found out in my recent tour of Scotland, waterproof....
I am in the market for a jacket-trouser combo and it has been a rather frustrating search so far in order to find something that covers my needs. I think this video helped more than any other review, Cheers!
+George Mayo Thank you George, all I can say is that I have found the RST kit to be excellent value for money and I thoroughly recommend it! ....and no, they haven't paid me to say that!! Thanks for watching and for your kind words - TMF
I’m wondering if you could advise as you say the sizes are reliable, Adventure jacket Pro Series, does it run big in the sizes, I’m a 46.5 inch chest do I go 48nch jacket or a 50inch jacket. Thanks
Love all of your videos and the honesty of it all! Have to say, intro very loud and voice very quiet though, have to turn you all the way up to hear you... Then get blown away by other channels haha! Thanks for the vids!
Hey thanks for another great review How is it baring up now? Are you still using it? I did have the halvarson gear but unfortunately had off and it's now a bit beat up I'm looking for something thats got decent waterproofing but also comfortable Thanks Steve
Changed mine last year to RST from a high viz Hiene Geirke. Went for a black RST found the high viz HG discoloured with road grime after time. Now use high viz Oxford bib, the RST is more superior quality with vents waterproof pockets everywhere. Great for paperwork when hauling across Europe and want everything within reach. Verdict great jacket
Hi, great channel you have! Thanks for the informative vids. I wanted to ask whether you'd seen or tested the RST Adventure X yet...looks similar, probably a few added features? Any comments on the pants size...slim or generous? Thanks mate
Agree with TMF, ive got the rst pro2 jacket and its been great even in heavy rain for hours and hours, although the outer gets soaked it still keeps you dry.
Ha! Bought one of these this morning. Actually wore my NF Nuptse to the bike shop so I could squash it into my backpack once I had acquired the RST. Great minds!
Great review, I've been looking to upgrade from my Paragon kit to the Adventure. What do you use or how do you clean them? my RST gear is getting a bit mucky from riding through the winter.
...I just take all the armour and linings out and then stick it in the washing machine at 30 degrees and then drip dry - works a treat and come out like new...
Good review, but just a question I’m slightly confused on the size wise as I’m 36 chest, but the eBay says 40 or 42 going up? Any idea please thank you
Liking the new intro TMF. I currently have the Adventure 2 jacket and trousers, wear them all year round, warm in the winter and cool in the summer with all those vents. Don't think I've ever seen the RST Adventure kit in any group tests though... Their customer support is top notch. Certainly I'd recommend their kit.
A good at last a fellow RST fan - I was surprised that the initial few comments I had reported poor performance with the RST kit - I've found it to be quite the opposite - i.e. excellent! Good to hear from you as ever DM...TMF
Good review. Kit looks good and very good value. I won't tell you how much I paid for my Rukka Arma S jacket and trousers but then again they are around 10 years old or so and look brand new and don't leak. looking after kit like this and using the correct washing kit is absolutely essential for a long life.
I am new ,old to this game! I am 178cm and 110kg ,so not a skinny man! there are so mutch different sises out there. In alpin stars i must have 4 x,but italians are normally thin. Does rst have somthing for a fat fart like me? Bought the rst adventure boots, because they look like i had some more cm from the multi to the ground. have not been able to ride the bike yet. its chaind down in the garage, waiting for my first ride on a multi 950.i have put alot of mods on it. heated grips, denali soundbomb mini, alarm, centerstand, low seat,sw motech side panniers, tomtom rider, heed crash bars .and thinking of to get a gps tracker fitted. gone ride, norway, sweeden from right to left and up and down for at least 2 mont!
Hi, enjoying your videos as an experienced but still fairly uneducated rider! The laminate jacket prices have come down massively such as a Bering Balistik or Richa Infinity 2 Pro. As an older version how does this compare with the above? I'm potentially commuting a couple of hours a day so looking at best options. Some more kit review would be great as it's such a minefield. Merlin seem to be doing some great value kit at the moment. Cheers, keep up the great videos.
Hi, I am looking for a adventure still jacket and trousers with vents for summer touring. I see from your recent Trossachs videos that you are now using the Triumph Exploration jacket and trousers. Any preference?
Hi TMF I know this is an old vid and thread but was interested in your review of the RST A3 suit and have a question. I'm thinking of a new touring outfit and like the look of the RST A3 or similar separate waterproof liner types from other makers. Against these I'm also considering one of the Goretex or similar breathable bonded waterproof liner types from the likes of Rukka, Klim or Halvarssons but they are vastly more expensive than the likes of the RST A3, some of the jackets alone costing around £1,000 though the Halvarssons Walkyr is a bit cheaper. The bonded liner versions have the advantage of not requiring a separate w/liner which needs to be put in or taken out according to the weather. According to reviews I've read, the problem with separate w/liner types like the A3 is that they keep you dry but in prolonged rain the outer can become totally drenched with water, taking a very long time to dry and making it feel heavy and the rider feel cold and clammy. But with the Goretex bonded types the rain runs off easily so that the outer never gets that wet, thus drying quickly and not cooling you down and also they are breathable so that you get less sweaty. Have you ever had this soaking problem with the RST A3? Be good to have your views or anyone else too. It's particularly the wet weather conditions that will sway me one way or the other, not worried about the thermal properties as I have plenty of good quality base and mid layers already, having been riding for many decades. Thanks and congratulations on a seriously useful channel.
Thanks for the reply. I've never had one of these touring suits before, always been just a jeans and leather jacket man even on long tours round Europe, carrying easily packable, very lightweight waterproof overs in case of rain. It worked for me. But I'm weakening and am now considering a touring suit, and it's a good point you make that in the case of the cheaper separate waterproof liner types like the RST A3 etc., which save many £00s over the bonded types, it may be advisable to still have the waterproof overs.
TMF I now have the jacket. Superb! I am similar size to you and would like to get the trousers. What size did you go for? I bought the large jacket and it is a comfortable fit. Had my new GS Tour for a week and loving it! Only problem is the weight on the side stand when moving off a cambered parking position.
Good review as usual. I've got the original jacket and it's been excellent over the last few years ( although never understood the point of removable sleeves ). Why on the latest version have they gone to the trouble to mention " adventure" five times on the jacket? I know it's a small point but it's a detail that would put me off buying it.
Yes I do agree with you there Mike, one of the reasons I went for black this time was because it made me look less "adventury" and then they go and stamp that all over it!! On the plus side the sleeves no longer zip-off - like you, I never understood that feature either!!! In the main the changes they have made are for the better....
On the back of your excellent review of the original Adventure Kit I took a ride out to the SuperBikeShop in Boston to check them out . Arrived in my old Akito Desert kit . Not bad for the price I paid. But rode home in the RST .Oh my goodness! what an significant improvement in every aspect :0). I ride every day. Commuting, to Sunday blast (long and short)and this kit was awesome , particularly when it got HOT!! Many mates if full leather were a little envious, especially in traffic .. After 2, or is it 3 years plus years ... the kit is still going strong, though tempted by the new version I checked out at my local J&S the originals will do for for a wee while longer. They cost £500 at the time, so to upgrade to the latest is being still the same price is a good nod to RST strategy :0) Only problem is I use them too much it's so good. So mix and matching my leather vented trousers with Jacket for longer higher speed rides. But Jacket still getting abused so ordering a Pro Series Ventilator V5 for general use , then back to the Adventure when the weather turns . Great info please continue :0)
Hi there. I am off to Italy in June. I was going to wear my RST leather trousers and Revit textile jacket. But for waterproof trousers I use Peter Storm walking trousers over my leathers.£20 and they work really well. I am thinking of a new complete suite. Would these two be suitable for hot weather riding.
again nice review, after nearly 50yrs of motorcycling I've tried all sorts, I've even got a AGV leather suit which I bought in the 80s, Agree rst is certainly good value for the money, I bought a hien gerick fabric suit for £750, after a year all the zips fell apart, I currently use a wolf suit which is good vfm.
nice gear my gear is so f***** hot in the summer... it also has ventilation zippers but you can t open a big spot. it just opens a "line" which i think is not enough... nice video cheers Tom
Yeah that is the beauty of the RST kit - massive great ventilation panels, basically turns into a mesh jacket - great all year round in this country...
Just taken delivery of the Adventure 3 jacket and trousers and have been experimenting with the various combinations of liners. Is there any water resistance without the wet liner or is it better to leave it in just in case. I'm thinking of the sudden downpour where you wouldn't want to be in your underpants on the side of the road struggling to fit the liner or do you carry over trousers for these occasions. Also, any thoughts on get you home puncture repair kits. Love your channel bye the way.
Well I leave the wet and quilted liner out in Summer and the jacket is fine if you're in a light shower - if caught in a deluge without the liner you'd be in trouble....thanks for watching - TMF
Question: I want to buy the new 3 clothing but been told the rst range is rubbish and leaks , did you have any leak issues with your last suit ? Your review sounds really good, and thought I'd just ask before buying Cheers Neil
Hi Neil - Nope, mine has never leaked, I have nothing but praise for the RST kit (and they're not paying me to say this stuff - I just think it's good kit)....
I went for the Large....fits a little closely so you may want the XL....Amazon/RST's returns policy is excellent mind you so no problems if it didn't fit...
That's a very nice review! I am about to buy a new kit and considering this RST and Klim Badlands. Have you had any chance to try the most expensive clothes on the market? Are they really worth it? I dare to say I ride quite a bit (from Portugal to Tajikistan or Mongolia and from Nordkapp to middle east) and would like to buy something that will hopefully last very long time. First priority is being (or not) waterproof and keeping me warm, money is also important but nut as much. Any thoughts? Cheers
I've not tried the super expensive stuff (like the Klim) - for your sort of riding I would think it is worth shelling out the cash...! All the best - TMF
Morning, just wondering why there’s an ad at the top saying “sponsored” you said the video isn’t sponsored. Good review. I’m looking at RST myself for the adventure 2 boots.
That’s nothing to do with me - I think it refers to the products in the ad strip if I’m thinking of the right thing. I don’t have control of you tube placing sponsored ads around my content if they’re related (not sure I’ve explained that well). Either way I certainly don’t get paid to produce product reviews other than the “normal” Google Adsense revenue I would get for any monetised video....
I have the jacket and its fantastic in any weather , i use the plattypus water thingy me bob in the pouch in the back , only downside they are a bit on the small side for me , so going for a richa 8 xl next time , rst 5 xl is to short for me , but would buy another in a heartbeat if they had the right size
Thank you Red Dragon...and my original kit is also going strong after 3 years of pretty much daily year-round use, just starting to look at bit grubby (even after a wash)....
Good review, and was admiring the combination of this kit and the Arai on your Tiger Sport video. Dare I suggest you're becoming a bit of a fashion icon ..!
Yes and yes - and the pockets in these are in exactly the right position for me - the first time I've ever bought kit where that happens without modification!
Went and had a look at this jkt in the shop after watching as I need a replacement for my paragon 4. I noticed the liners are pop looped rather than zips in the arm cuffs which put me off. You mention there zipped.... can you confirm in case I missed something? Then I noticed the rather tight cuff itself.... can you fit a glove inside? Lastly the rear pocket was small in comparison to my old jkt. I ended up mulling over the paragon 5 as the cuffs now have draft stoppers, there zipped not looped so they come try and come with ya hand when you take your arm out 😊 and the rear pocket is larger I the paragon 5. I'm toying between the paragon 5, the adventure 3, and the alpine star val 2. Any ideas?
Well it's your choice mate! The Adventure 3 cuffs are loop fastened (works fine for me, was the same on the original adventure) with the inners attached with zips. And yes you can fit gloves under the cuffs - at least my H2Outs do....you can't really go wrong with RST kit in my view.....
TheMissendenFlyer thanks for the reply.... I'll need to have another look at those looped liners in the cuffs. I can see myslef getting an rst jkt. it's just which one of those two.
I've got an rst tractech evo textile jacket, which I have been similarly impressed with. It's overly sporty in style perhaps with a speed hump which makes it an awkward jacket to use off the bike, but I bought mine in the middle of last winter for about 140 pounds which was a steal. I used the change over the adventure jacket ( which would have been in a similar style to the HG jacket I replaced) to grab a Ventilator mesh jacket in the summer, which does the mesh well, but is a bit overcomplicated with the liners and might be better served with a good quality oversuit should it rain... I digress, my tractec evo has very similar shoulder mouldings to the adventure and I find they catch against the edges of my helmet during shoulder checks. It's particularly bad with a scala bluetooth system as it has to hang down from the helmet rim. Do you have similar problems with the adventure series of jackets?
TheMissendenFlyer, it's worse with helmets that come down low, shark speed R (broke it) was worst, Skwal (defective, returned) and HJC RPHA ST (my main lid this winter) both catch, K3SV (summer/spare) is better as it's cut away very agressively. It's only ever been the textile Tractech ive had issues with. Ive gone as far as using some slightly trimmed forcefield Net shoulder armour in place of the RST pads as it's thinner but better, wich improves matters slightly. The shape of me with prominent trapezius muscles doesn't help, but next time around i think I'll be forking for the CPXC jacket with the small carbon rank bars rather than the comedy plastic epaulettes. At least they are not brass lobster tails.
You should try Rukka kit, it just won't die. I still have a jacket from 2002 and it's still warm and waterproof after all that time. Styling is a little dated of course!
I've often heard that Goretex is the gold standard for waterproofing and breathability, what are your thoughts on that? I see you don't have it in this jacket and trousers and your boots don't either, I'm probably just paying more for a for brandname.lol
Well I think Goretex was the first proper one way breathable yet waterproof material - other manufacturers now have similar tech. I think you're right, some brand name weight coming in to play....
I've avoided RST tbh mainly because the guy I work with has some and it keeps failing apart. My first suit was Furygan which cost £400 and lasted 2 years, in the end it leaked almost everywhere so I decided as I ride everyday in all weather I'd stump up the cash and get some Rukka...it's expensive but I believe worth it and that's what it comes down too.
I've left my suit in the shed. The first and only time out coming back from a rally ie the suit was brand new I ran into rain that my ancient dririder would have coped with easily and I found I became absolutely drowned.I've never ever been so wet in my life whilst riding....To say I was disappointed was a major understatement Plus the leg inner lining needs to be completely redesigned as its a pain in the arse to get over high touring boots. I've gone back to waxed cotton gear and even though they dont have the armour and all the rest I keep it as it does keep the rain out and I dont end up with boots full of water .....Considering the fuss and bother I had to get this adventure suit and the expense I am extremely disappointed and hell Id give the damn thing away for free
I personally would never use RST again! had a couple of jackets many years ago & had problems with the main zips, once while touring Scotland! my brother also had problems with some gloves coming un stitched, sent them back a few times but kept on happening, doesn't fill you with confidence in the event of a spill. I've been using Dainese for the last few years now & always I find they feel a lot better made, although there is a higher cost! I'm a firm believer in you get what you pay for. like the channel though, keep up the good work.
Well I agree with the "you get what you pay for" thing but I have never had an issue with RST kit and have bought this textile stuff, jeans and leathers and have only ever had good service out of it - not to mention excellent customer service form RST themselves. I also find the fit is just right for me. Just shows you doesn't it - we can get completely different perceptions of the same kit!! (I have bought Dianese boots but didn't get on with them for example). Thanks for watching and stopping by and for giving the alternative view! Cheers - TMF
I'm recent subscriber. Your videos are very helpful. Great review of the RST gear. It looks like it could be suitable for all year round use. I'm currently looking to upgrade my old gear. How has the adventure3 performed in the rain for you? Any leaks at all? I live in ireland so like the UK rain is a given.
It works a treat in showers but if you're in a prolonged downpour the outer shell will get saturated and you could get cold if you don't have the thermal liner in. In reality these sort of downpours I rarely ride in so for me I've never had an issue with the RST adventure in rain...thanks for watching and good to have you along! - TMF
was that phone call your better half saying "are you Still in the garage! " haha.. I'm still enjoying your videos and working my way through them when I get the chance.
Hey thanks for the RST review, looking for somthing different from the standard options here in the US. RST is not a common name here in the states. Sounds like it is put together quite well, that is what I need! I am 5.10 and about 200 pds having a hard time guessing on sizing for the jacket , can you give any advice? Im guessing we are close to the same build. Cheers!
I have this model of RST jacket and pants. Very satisfied. It's made in UK. I have it a year ago. Rain will penetrate the jacket and you gonna be wet in about 10 minutes of hard rain if you do not wear a rain jacket which is a part of the suit.
I had a pair of RST winter leggings. Absolutely toasty if a little cumbersome. Getting adventure/winter kit that keeps you warm and dry yet you can move freely in is the trick. C'mon Spring! I love being able to ride in Kevlar jeans and leather jacket. I like little fuss and ease of use with my gear. Cheers TMF. What's the next bike review mate? I've really been enjoying that.
TheMissendenFlyer Your call sir. Bring em on. I'd love a look at the new Tuono or the new Ducati Supersport. I enjoy them all having said that. Your unbiased real world reviews are helpful whatever the machine. Cheers.
Hi, I would agree, top notch kit. I have the Paragon V jacket and trousers and can't fault them. RST kit is well worth the money. Another great video, many thanks
Have you ever had the chance to review some of these "Airbag" type jackets? They seem good in theory. Don't know of anyone who has actually gone out and got one though. Would be interesting to see if they are as good as the manufactures claim. As always I'm enjoying watching your videos. Thanks TMF!
Wife on the phone asking what have you bought now! Next time I get a suit I will get one without an inbuilt waterproof liner. Prefer one over the top. I have a summer mesh jacket for hot weather, oh and just got an alpine leather jacket. Hang on the phones ringing, wife giving me a bollocking.
Nigel Hudson mesh jackets with a removable liner are a bit of a ballache, I bought an RST Ventilator last summer, and found I was carrying a thin windstopper fleece for cool summer nights, and just using the top of my oversuit if it rained, as it takes 5 minutes of fiddling to get the liner in rather than 30 seconds. The only time I used the waterproof lining on the ventilator i found it didn't come down far enough to direct water over the top of my trousers, so I had about two hours of riding with water pouring down the inside of my trousers. The fixed waterproof lining on all my RST kit equipped with such has been excellent. It's never got me soaked unlike HG or IXS kit. It's not as breathable as goretex though, and the 3 sets of goretex gloves i have had have been amazing.
Cheers both - one thing I have found over the years is that there are no perfect solutions to all weather riding, the RST kit is as near as I have got to it personally but you are right, you have to experiment and find what works best for you - thanks for watching - TMF
Hi MF!, just looking at at buying the adventure 3 and the adventure 2 is also available at less than half the price in the shop im looking at them. Would you say the 3 is a vast improvement on the 2? they look very similar. Cheers
I’ve only had a 1 and 3 so can’t really say! I suspect the 2 is fine, personally I preferred the 1 to the 3 (less branding and no horrible plastic shoulder pads!).....
@@TheMissendenFlyer sorry i thought that was the 2 you had there. the 3 is nice but i think it could have done with a few less ADVENTURE logos. one in every pocket, sleeve, front panels and back is a bit much! Great channel keep up the good work! Cheers!
I've not had much luck with rst stuff don't seem to last very well , but saying that your new stuff is very much like my Bmw gear I'm still using , may have to go look at them again , great job keep it up 👍🏻
I thoroughly recommend them Neil, defo worth another look - my original Adventure Pro kit lasted superbly well, I wore it day in and day out for 3 and a half years (all weathers) and it's still going strong, only reason I replaced it was because I fancied a different colour for a change! ...and "replaced" is the wrong word because I will now use it when I'm on the dirt bike...
TheMissendenFlyer Cheers I'll defo go look again, I'm in need of new gear was stressing over what to use , my rally 2 suit is great but very old now Thanks Neil
Great video, very helpful as I'm looking for something like this for my trip to North Carolina in May. I need something that will handle all the different weather conditions Mother Nature is sure to dole out! Thanks again!
Difficult for me to say as I don't do really hot here in blighty! What I would say is that the vents on this kit are the best of any I've ridden with, so my guess is it would be good....
Not only did I buy a GS on your review, but also the jacket! I got a large as I seemed to fall between medium and large. I will let you know. I looked at the BMW Rally Jacket but it was twice the cost, not certain it is twice as good.
Depending where you live, climate wise or where you plan to ride, the zip out waterproof liner can be a pain. If you are in a warm climate and you leave the liner out, so the jacket and pants can breathe better, then get caught out in heavy rain, bit hard to start fitting liners, that's my main gripe with liners. The Klim gear is good, but as you say, pricey, great thing is the Gortex, no need for a liner, just waterproof zips, so ventilation is great. The other down side with Klim, no thermal lining, so that is an extra cost. I think it cost me $1800 Aus for my Klim latitude jacket and overland pants, but since I ride every day in a warmer climate, unlike dear old blighty, they are with the money. The layer system with a fleece seems to work good when the temp drops to single digits, but that is rare. Another good vid, enjoying your work sir 👍
Thank you WhiteDRman 60 - completely get your points, it does of course depend on the climate in which you're operating, but for western Europe type variations say -5 to +25 C then I've found the RST kit brilliant....and great value. Thanks for the kind words, appreciated - TMF
I live in Melbourne and work as a courier, so got no choice no ride no make money, moderate climate here, worn the Klim on 35 degree days, never know when a cool change will hit down here, so be prepared. Most of the time it is a mesh jacket if going to be hot, anything above 30 sitting in traffic is bloody disgusting but take a few precautions and it bearable. Top half is easy to cool but legs and feet not so easy wearing boots.
What i like about this vid is you've clearly worn the jacket in poor weather so gives your review weight. but once i get my bike know which gear i'll being using
Hi MF, I've had my Frank Thomas jacket and a pair of Hein Gericke Jeans with Kevlar in the abrasion areas since 2000, after watching your (excellent) review I was beginning to feel a bit stingy until I read the Ferret's comments 😑. Unfortunately I have not been able to wash them in all that time, the FT jacket says not to wash and I can not wash the HG jeans because I cant get the Knox rubber knee protectors out of their pockets! I was left wondering if all that washing does them in? The problem I've had is, I go into a shop try on a few jackets and trousers then quickly get fed up because they seem to be tailored for tall thin men, and not my 48" chest, 38" (ish) waist and short 28/9 leg, what I find is the trousers are normally 32" leg and the knee armour is therefore half way down my shins. Regarding RST gear I had noticed that Henry Cole uses them in his various journeys and sometimes in atrocious conditions so I guess its about time for me to find a RST dealer and give them a try. In the mean while, thank you for your informative and interesting bloggs. Regards, Gordon Waltham
Don't you just love it when these RU-vidrs replace one bit of kit, that they probably were given, after 3 years for another bit of kit, that they definitely were given, and try to convince us folk that need to replace our 10-year old+ kit, bought with our own money, they are doing an unbiased review? 'Not paying me to say this' = gave me the kit for nothing.
This looks very good. Best piece of riding kit I've had was a Fieldsheer one piece that i got a few yrs back - completely waterproof and very comfortable to wear - unfortunately you can't buy it in the UK anymore. Keep the reviews coming. Ride safe Steve
How waterproof is waterproof? Has this been totally waterproof for you even after hours of riding in heavy rain? Ive found that waterproof bike gear is only waterproof for a certsin legnth of time. Also have you not considered dropping a load of money on a suit woth the waterproofing bonded to the external of the jacket such as a klim or a rukka jacket. Instead of this where the jacket iant waterproof and just the lined is?
Well yes you've hit the nail on the head - in a very heavy downpour over a period of hours (like the ride I experienced this Tuesday!) the "waterproof" is indeed defeated - I would like to try the bonded type jackets but it's just down to money really, that Rukka stuff is sooo expensive...
I know this an old video, but I saw in your excellent travel video of your Scottish trip, that you were using a down jacket under your RST jacket. Most I’ve seen appear too long to wear under a biker jacket and matching trousers. What brand/model are you using? Thanks.
Actually the 2 in black would be my preference (due less "adventure" labelling and the lack of the external shoulder reinforcements)...not sure if you can still get them though...
