Former Republic of Ireland soccer manager Jack Charlton is honoured with the RTÉ/Irish Sports Council Hall of Fame Award.
During his 10 year reign as manager, the Republic of Ireland qualified for two World Cups, a European Championship and peaked at No.6 in the FIFA World rankings.
Jack was presented with his award by former Irish International Ray Houghton; who made his debut for the Republic of Ireland during Jack's first match in charge against Wales in 1986.

if only houghton had blasted the one from usa 94 against the italians at italia 90, they'd have played argentina in the semi final and maybe won on pens and then went on to play england in rome. with gazza suspended. and won the world cup on pens with chris waddle mullet chopped off for the final. well , it would have made up for the fact that scotland never get past the first round.

What a great loss to the world of Football, A legend when you think about it, in theology God takes the best so maybe God our Father in heaven is creating his own Football team, well he has Bobby Moore, Gordon banks Peter Osgood. My Condolences to his family and friends .may they all find peace in heaven.

@shutup did we? We had a handy players but we didn't have one world class player. Jack made a silk purse out of a sows ear. Charlton deserves alot of credit for getting to a quarter final of the World Cup.

@shutup We had maybe one or two world class players, Paul McGrath being one - tell me how many tournaments we qualified with Paul in the side before Jack arrived?! Big Jack made us a force, don't get that twisted! Only for him, we'd NEVER have had the likes of Houghton and Aldridge grace Landsdowne Road! RIP Big Jack!!!!!
