Doctor Who is a British science-fiction television programme broadcast by the BBC since 1963. The programme depicts the adventures of a Time Lord called the Doctor, an extraterrestrial being who appears to be human. The Doctor explores the universe in a time-travelling space ship called the TARDIS. The TARDIS exterior appears as a blue British police box, which was a common sight in Britain in 1963 when the series first aired. With various companions, the Doctor combats foes, works to save civilisations, and helps people in need.
Beginning with William Hartnell, thirteen actors have headlined the series as the Doctor. The transition from one actor to another is written into the plot of the show with the concept of regeneration into a new incarnation, a plot device in which a Time Lord "transforms" into a new body when the current one is too badly harmed to heal normally.
A series of special episodes of the British science fiction television programme Doctor Who will air to celebrate the programme's 60th anniversary. The episodes were written by Russell T Davies, and will be broadcast on BBC One in November 2023, preceding the following fourteenth series. David Tennant will appear as the Fourteenth Doctor before Ncuti Gatwa takes over as the Fifteenth Doctor. Catherine Tate was also confirmed to be returning to the show in the 2023 specials.
The three specials were directed by Rachel Talalay, Tom Kingsley and Chanya Button respectively. Filming moved from Roath Lock Studios to Wolf Studios once Bad Wolf became a co-producer of the series; filming commenced in May 2022, and was complete
David Tennant will appear as the Fourteenth Doctor before Ncuti Gatwa takes over as the Fifteenth Doctor. Catherine Tate was also confirmed to be returning to the show in the 2023 specials. Yasmin Finney joined the cast for the anniversary, to portray a character named Rose. Bernard Cribbins, Jacqueline King and Karl Collins are also set to return as Wilfred Mott, Sylvia Noble and Shaun Temple, respectively.
On 29 July 2021, the BBC announced that Chris Chibnall, who served as executive producer and showrunner of the series for the Thirteenth Doctor, would depart the series after a run of specials in 2022. In the BBC press release, Chibnall is quoted as saying: "I wish our successors - whoever the BBC and BBC Studios choose - as much fun as we've had. They're in for a treat!" The future of the programme was first teased by Piers Wenger on 25 August 2021, when he said an upcoming change for Doctor Who would be "radical".
On 24 September 2021, the BBC announced Russell T Davies would return to Doctor Who as showrunner, after having previously acted as showrunner from 2005-2010 for the Ninth and Tenth Doctors. He will succeed Chibnall for the show's 60th anniversary in 2023 and beyond. Davies will be joined by the Bad Wolf production company, which was founded by former Doctor Who executive producer Julie Gardner and former BBC head of drama Jane Tranter. In October 2021, it was announced that Sony would acquire a majority of Bad Wolf. Bad Wolf also took over creative control of Doctor Who beginning with the specials, allowing the BBC to focus on establishing Doctor Who as a global brand.
The Fourteenth Doctor is the current incarnation of the Doctor, the fictional protagonist of the BBC science fiction television programme, Doctor Who. The Fourteenth Doctor is portrayed by Scottish actor, David Tennant, who previously portrayed the Tenth Doctor.
Within the series narrative, the Doctor is a millennia-old, alien Time Lord from the planet Gallifrey, with somewhat unknown origins, who travels in time and space in their TARDIS, frequently with companions. At the end of life, the Doctor regenerates; as a result, the physical appearance and personality of the Doctor changes.
Ncuti Gatwa had previously been announced as Jodie Whittaker's successor as the programme's lead, and many reports stated he would play the Fourteenth Doctor and that Whittaker's Thirteenth Doctor would regenerate into an incarnation portrayed by Gatwa. Upon Jodie Whittaker's final appearance as the character, she instead regenerated into a form similar to the Tenth Doctor. This character, portrayed by Tennant, was confirmed to be the Fourteenth Doctor, with later clarification that Ncuti Gatwa would actually portray the Fifteenth Doctor

While I'm not a fan of the concept, I think with the right amount of passion, using it as a spring board for character stuff can be interesting. For me the highlight of the Timeless Child arc was how it smashed the Master's ego and I wished more had been done with that, how he feels this makes the Doctor better than him, being jealous especially given the Doctor almost certainly doesn't want the power and status given to them, which is why he goes to effort to literally become the Doctor, something that is almost completely glossed over in Power of the Doctor.

I very much agree with your idea that Doctor Who has almost been consumed by its own lore. I found the timeless child concept intriguing at the time, but if too much of the Doctor's backstory is revealed it feels a bit like someone explaining how a magic trick is done. I prefer an aura of mystery.

The only way I’d accept the timeless children is if the little girl was a future doctor sent into the past, so he becomes an endless paradox looping back onto himself so he is the origin of the time lords and has always been a time lord, almost like a boot strap paradox

And yet, I continue to see numerous comments from various Americans saying “what is going on”, or “how many times will I need to watch this episode to understand what is going on”. Perhaps you are more intelligent than the average American fan, and don’t need things spoon-fed to you? Or perhaps it has something to do with American shows generally being targeted at the lowest common denominator, requiring little or no thought to follow along? Which isn’t to say there are many examples of clever, thought-provoking shows produced in the US - but there are also numerous popular “reality” TV shows, and something called “The Cardassians”, which I was disappointed to learn was not Star Trek related… 😂 Please note, I am not intending to be insulting to American Whovians - I am sure you are all a great bunch! Certainly, your taste in sci-fi shows indicates as much. 😊 Cheers,

For me, the Doctor's always been the most important thing in the universe. The Timelords, themselves, owed him their lives many times over. Literally nothing of worth would be around if it weren't for the Doctor, even before 2005. So, Timeless Child really didn't change much in that regard.

Did Tecteun not get turned to dust by Swarm? Pretty sure she’s dead and gone. It could be a past version of Tecteun I suppose, but why would she be messing with the current Doctor considering she had plenty of time to do so before her death but never did? “You can’t just turn round to the audience and say none of the stuff you watched for the last 3 years mattered.” But it was fine for Chibs to turn round and say none of the stuff you watched, read, listened to, played, invested in, got tattoos of and inspired you to go do great things of your own over the past 57 years matters because I want to be the one who answered the question Doctor Who in the poorest written, franchise killing way possible. And yep your right, it does feel insulting spending all that time dedicated to watching it only to figure out I waisted my time if it could all be undone in one shoddy season finally and the vast majority of the audience who’ve abandoned the new stuff feel the same way.

@@ivymoon5084 I’ll agree he contradicted the show to tell his trash story🤣. Taking away long-established answers “popular fan assumptions” as you wrongly put it, isn’t the same as adding more mystery. Before TC we knew what? His race, planet, he ran away and a few anecdotes. Now we know he’s an immortal god king who was experimented on to become the genetic great grandfather of the Timelords, which ew when you think about it, who worked for the Timelords and had his memories erased. That’s honestly more mysterious to you, is it? Seriously what questions worth asking did TC give us? When you look at the viewing figures, fan reaction and audience engagement its absolutely dead and mostly abandoned. Theres a reason this is series 1 and not 14. Theres also a reason why an advert for the blu-ray of a 47-year-old season gets more views and likes that the trailer for the new series. If you think there’s going to be another showrunner after RTD’s done hammering the final nails in the coffin you’re sorely mistaken. The 57 years was in relation to Tharries saying undoing the past 3 would be wrong, but undoing 57 was ok was it? If the showrunners care that little about what came before, why should we care about what comes next? Well sadly now the majority of fans don’t.💀

Yeah I really don't like it either mainly because it takes away the idea of the doctor being just a random not so special timelord running away and being what he was. The Timeless Child is ridiculous and as you say Tharries, it makes the Doctor too important to the fabric of the universe. Quite why RTD feels it is an important element in order to make the Doctor an orphan. Surely the disappearance (again) of Gallifrey serves that same purpose? It would have been better to forget The Timeless Child, just like the half human tosh. I am worried Ruby Sunday will turn out to be another foundling from the same species as the Doctor. And then she will be ripped away from him. RTD's suggestion he might have had a hand in the midnight release is a smokescreen. Disney are absolutely calling the shots. The BBC have lost control of one of their few unique and bankable properties.

I feel like Chibnall didn’t commit enough to make the Timeless Child impactful. He needed just a sprinkle of more backstory to make it work. Just a nugget. Thirteen should’ve had a line she gave to Yaz in that episode, something like “My mother and father raised me- . . . . Did they lie to me too?” Instead, the feeling of betrayal is completely in the abstract. It doesn’t hit. Why is she upset by it, more than the fact she didn’t know a thing she does know now? What does it recontextualize? Even just that little bit, of having parents she cared about, a mother who loved her, then to question if they knew she’d been tortured and didn’t ever do anything about it or tell her, that’s drama. We needed some drama. Or else, why introduce it in the first place? What stories does it offer you?

The classic Doctors may have had more "episodes" technically, but these were multipart serials. The 2nd Doctor only did 7 stories each year, and ultimately matched exactly the number of stories that the 13th Doctor had, and by this metric she only did 1 story in her final series (although each part of Flux stood alone much more than the parts of a classic serial did, so it's an inexact system). It's no secret that classic Who was slowly paced and heavily time-padded, so ironically I'd say this newest era is closer to the show's early years in terms of story-per-Doctor output than ever before. It was 10-11-12 who were the exceptions. Even the epic run of the the 4th Doctor barely edges out 10 and 11 in story count.

I still don’t believe RTD is “resting” the Master. He was prominently mentioned in the final 60th anniversary special, and particular focus was given to someone picking up the tooth he is allegedly contained in. Unrelated question: how long was the Last Great Time War? We see a young War Doctor’s reflection, when he regenerates. The next time we see him, he is an old man, of indeterminate age. But we know troops were fighting, dying, ageing incredibly fast, and being resurrected, due to the various temporal forces they were being subjected to. So how much time actually passed? Did the Time War rage for decades/ centuries/ millennia, or did it all occur within the space of a week, with all the timey-wimey shenanigans happening make it seem much longer? Where is my Time War spin-off! 😂 Three series is not a “rule” as such… Cheers,

Even as a story, what with the editing and the policeman storyline, and it only got worse with the childish FOOMing of Gallifrey again and the "Cyber Masters" is just beyond dumb. Yes. A special being through actions, not predetermined as special by fate. I don't mind the TC as a concept for the origins of the Timelords but you have perfectly described why it doesn't sit well with me that its the Doctor, too contrived, would much prefer had it been someone else, perhaps Susan or another character we have never met. I get that RTD is using it to drive the drama and character, which I kind of like but on the other hand it also means it goes hand in hand with the TC lore. Just like the Fugitive Doctor, I really like Jo Martin's performance but her appearances are always interlinked with the TC story, there's just no getting away from it and it cannot be treated as if they are separate things as RTD seems to be inferring.

I, for one, like the continuity stuff. To me, the weakest seasons of modern Doctor Who have been the ones where management have mandated less mythos (first half of series 7 as well as series 11). I like the feeling that there's some depth behind what we're seeing on the screen. At the same time, over-reliance on the mythos is not so good either - just look at series 13 and how it both made all the episodes into one big story and almost exclusively used returning villains (plus the Swarm). Like everything, moderation is key.

The Timeless Child definitly ruined Dr Who, so I'm just hoping that Space Theybies can restore it back to its former glory😂

I'm a bit confused by your thought process saying "you can't turn around and say none of the stuff you watched for the past 3 years mattered" while not considering that the timeless child new plot line saying "none of the stuff you watched for the past 55 plus years matters, we're just wiping it out so much of it now doesn't make sense". I perceive most people think 55 years plus trumps 3 years every time.

The difference is that the timeless child didn't erase/dismiss anything from the past 55 years.

@@TheMoonRover I'm sorry to disagree with you, I think it does erase/dismiss/contradict a lot, just so much stuff, from the past 55 years. I suspect you must not be very familiar with most of it to not understand that is the case, even despite the interpretations we've heard RTD talk about recently. I just find it annoying and disappointing when watching Classic and nu Who now as so many things come up as a problem/don't make sense/overwritten from so many great episodes/serials with fantastic imaginative script. However am not hostile to it like some very long term DW fans appear to be. I don't like all the bickering that goes on and wish more fans could just agree to disagree.

@DeepThought42 Having watched all of classic Doctor Who, the only real problem I see is: how does Tecteun fit in with Rassilon and Omega as the founders of Time Lord society? And I suppose it does retcon RTD's untempered schism.

@@TheMoonRover "Having watched"? how many times.? - I sense you are fairly young and not someone who grew up with Classic Who on the TV constantly (we got constant repeats here in Australia in the 70 to mid 80s) and not as familiar because re-watching throws up stuff you didn't notice previously, even after numerous re-watches. Even now when I watch classic and nu who all kinds of things jump out as problem from so many stories. I'm very unwell at the moment so brain won't recall any examples right now, but I'm always spotting more problems with re-watches of Classic and nu Who. I find it disappointing as it feels like such a great legacy of DW writing has been tainted a bit. I think why it annoys me at the moment is because there are so many serials in Classic Who where the plots/scripts are just so fantastic, so incredibly imaginative compared to a lot of nu Who, that even the lower productions values, visual effects from the time, and even just early days of TV style/limitations on the production don't detract much from enjoying. I guess I'll get over or used to it or just watch pre Chibnall Who like I don't know about what he did. It just bugs me a bit, especially as I don't think Chibnall really thought it through thoroughly, just throwing in an idea he had from his DW fandom back in the 80s without really developing or "nutting it out" so to speak.

I wish Ncuti all the best but as we've only seen one episode am I alone in thinking pronouncing his longevity is a bit of a risk? Colin Baker had an eight year plan but was unceremoniously dropped after a couple of seasons with a hiatus in the middle.

I like the fact that the Timeless Child is the Doctor, it brings more mystery and intrigue to who the Doctor is, I have watched Doctor Who since the 60's and have always thought that the Doctor is different and appears far more intelligent than the Timelords and has always out thought and been one step ahead of enemies and Timelords, so to be an orphan and adopted plus brought up as a Gallifreyan and the Timelords stealing his Regenerative power and trying to keep the Doctor to themselves before he eventually escapes, I personally am all for it, this is what puts the Doctor above all other beings, I unfortunately have not seen every episode but have been watching for close to 60 years and still enjoying it today like I did when I first watched it, Doctor Who is my escapism from this cruel world and is my enjoyment.

For a show that switches the actor who plays the lead character every 5 years, some fans really can't deal with 'change'. I thought the timeless child was a great addition, and I don't feel it takes anything away from the past it just adds another dimension. The show is called Dr Who, it's meant to be a mystery.
