Thank you for the review. I was guessing my SDR-RTL had a problem and it was not working properly, but it was a setting issue, just like you said!

For what it's worth, I'm a Ham & I had given up on getting this SDR working on HF after I bought it. Now, after watching your video you've given me the clues to how this gear needs to be set up in the software. All the other videos talking about this particular SDR didn't provide that, but you did. The point I'm making, you may feel you don't know your way around a radio, but you have a fine way of showing how to get the job done. I see how old your video is & I hope you followed through & got licensed. I hope you persevered & got your General License too. I'd be happy to work your station on HF. Good Job! DE KI4HEE

I bought this same unit when it first came out. There was no data sheet, nothing on youtube and I could find nothing on it. After hours of trial and error I finally got it to work.... well sometimes it worked. I was much happier when I sold it on ebay for half the price. At least now there is much more information on it, so I decided to purchase another one. Thanks for sharing this video I enjoyed watching

Hi, I purchased the exact device, differently marked, but the inside is exactly like yours. After several trial and errors I figured how HF works. The device HAS the up converter built in, it just needs to be set up. I was this close to throw it away. :) When you are in HF mode, click the SHIFT box and introduce either -28,799,700 or -57,599,700 in that field. It is actually the frequency of the crystal you just showed. Other devices have oscillators of cca 40 MHz or other values. But as long as the dongles are ok above 25 MHz, the below frequencies are converted UP by adding the oscillator frequency, and the dongle is happy then. Try out. Enjoy ! P.S. You need a long wire antenna.

Fast forward to 2020....Those can now be had for a bout 20 bucks on Fleabay, and no there is no "built in' upconverter. It has the direct sampling mod integrated with the PCB with a separate SMA connector for a dedicated HF antenna. That was the first RTL based SDR I bought back in 2017. I like the fact that it uses to separate ANT jacks but it uses the older R820T tuner chip instead of the newer R820T2 tuner chip. Today Id rather have 2 separate RTL-SDR V3 dongles. (one for VHF/UHF and one for HF). Just run 2 instances of SDR# and chose between either dongle.

(It's ok to start from the point after you have unwrapped it!) I have one of those and had it running under Linux and on my Android phone. Much easier to use on a big screen, and seems to work well.

Need used HF radio with antenna tuner to get into hobby better.

This does not have built in up-converter rather it samples direct off the i or Q branch (Bypasses the onboard tuner and channels tuning direct to software). where the VHF and UHF do not. My question was "does if have filters" and from what I saw wne you popped your open it looks like it has some decoupling and filtering circuits ont he HF side. They cost about $30 now on ebay The other dongle you have can also be modifed relatively easily to receive HF but instead of direct sampling the "Q" branch you set to ti the "I" branch

A 20m antenna is really easy to make. It will only be a wire, but it will work well for you.

some signals are in Upper side band some in Lower sideband also there are some in AM as well KG5CUO

Thanks for the video! I've been interested in Ham radio for years and now I'm ready. Last year I picked up on Linux and Raspberry Pi so I was thinking SDR is the way to go. This set up you've got here is one of the options I'm considering. I'm going to follow your demos on this and go from there. I don't know a soul who's into this. I'd appreciate any help. Thanks man!

You need to setup "SHIFT" frequency in #SDR for Your upconverter with HF. and use HF input in this way. frequency is depend from crystal/quarz resonator in up stage.

I have that SDR but it has a toggle switch for turning off the up converter I have found it to perform quite well for the price. Built a Magnetic loop antenna that I use to listen to the HF bands the spectrum analyzer display makes it very easy to tune the loop antenna to the desired freq.

I have a 25mhz to 1.7Hgz dongle , and waiting for an upconverter in the post. In the meantime I tried listening to the 28Mhz band , since for that I do not need an upconverter. ... however I had no success , I tried a simple indoor inverted V dipole , and with or without it connected , all I got was loads of peaks of constant tones. I was told this is probably interference. I tried with all electronics in the house switched off and I still got the same thing. I was also told it could be all interference from the laptop itself. did you have such issues ? I am hoping that with an upconverter I will have less of this interference.

Don't know if you've figured it out yet, but the reason you don't pick anything up on lower frequencies are because the antenna that came with the unit is not rated to work with HF frequencies, so you need to get a decent HF antenna first (maybe a long wire/magnetic loop antenna). I'm planning to buy this unit myself and an antenna as well, but I heard about this on different forums and groups... how have the unit worked for you since you bought it? Do you recommend buying it for shortwave listening?

This is a great video. Is your disco antenna an HF antenna? Can this listen to HF with a 2M antenna?

Re Here is a better one - But this one only has one antenna port. Do you still think its better if you use a better HF dipole antenna?

Ok ! i have the same unit...but i started with HDSDR or something like that...do i have to worry about that driver in the computer after i get that SDR SHARP, where is sdr sharp on the rtl site..i found no exact links..just a bunch of all other stuff they chat about...will it work on either a 32 or 64 bit I7 system which is what i first tried on..i do have another older windows 7 machine..what do i do next..i do note the two different internal ways to get HF or UHF .. do u have a link for the sdr sharp program that i see up on your screen..i guess once i get going,it will all have seemed so easy.. ps i have been in the DSS stuff in the 90s to 2000's so i just need tips and many thanks..a shortcut is set to this video

I have this same exact unit (and I have the same exact antenna set up). Cant make it work so far. In zadig after I list all devices I dont see the RTL adapter. Any idea's?

I have exact same unit Message to everyone who bought this Unit: 1.- change the usb cable, it is the main problem that makes the radio not work. 2.- open the unit and check if it has the 2 welded posts on the board Those that connect with the HF filter 3.- If you use windows 10 connect the unit and let windows install the driver for you, after that use ZADIG to change the driver. 4.-some of these units do not work in HF bands and only work from 24mhz to 1200 mhz, some others only work in HF Unfortunately I got one that only works in VHF.
