Ruacana Falls is a waterfall located in Ruacana, Omusati on the Kunene River in Northern Namibia. The waterfall is 120 meters high and 700 meters wide in full flood. It is among the largest waterfalls in Africa, both by volume and width.
The Kunene River, which forms part of the border between Namibia and Angola plunges into a 120 metre deep and 700 metre wide gorge - which forms the Ruacana Falls.
The river has been harnessed for hydroelectric production immediately above the falls. During the dry season the river is siphoned off entirely and the falls run dry. From roughly December to June the annual monsoons provide ample sustenance to the river basin that the hydro project maxes out and the falls return to their impressive natural state.
Two hydro-electric power plants have been built at the falls, the bigger of the two already in 1970 by South Africa, and the Kunene was dammed up accordingly. Although the Kunene is one of Namibia’s five perennial rivers, its water levels depend on the fluctuating annual rainfalls in the Angolan Highlands and on the opening of the two sluices regulating the water supply for the power plants.
The full strength of the falls can best be experienced during high water. Due to the Calueque Dam in Angola 40 km upstream the water levels are normally very low at Ruacana. Nonetheless the Falls have not lost any of their fascination and are still a touristic highlight (during high water in April / May).
At the lower course of the river white water rafting and canoe rides can be booked, but due to the large amount of crocodiles in the river swimming is not advisable.
The damaged stairs at the Ruacana waterfalls continue to be an eyesore to tourists and locals alike but the authorities seemingly do not want to take responsibility for their maintenance. The stairs have not been maintained or cared for in a very long time and during the rainy season the situation only gets worse.
However, it remains unclear to whom the stairs belong.
The Omusati Regional Council is not the owner of those stairs. It’s a difficult question to answer because the area falls in the Uukolonkadhi Conservancy.
The stairs were built by NamWater because that’s where the first hydro was.
One of the tourist attractions in Namibia. Ruacana Water falls will soon be a story of the past. Currently that is how the stairs (set of steps) down to the river look like. The stairs are completely damaged if not destroyed and very dangerous to walk through. One wonder how the situation will be when it starts raining. Who is responsible to rescue the nation from losing such a precious force of tourist attraction and preserve such a heritage for the young generation and those yet to be born.
The issue of ownership is not very clear yet. The Uukolonkadhi Traditional Authority has a stake. When it comes to maintenance it’s really a concern, even before the stairs were built there was a structure that seemingly belonged to NamWater.
There was a gentleman’s agreement that the stairs would be renovated. But there was nothing in black and white.
