Sarah Grace Hmm, last time I've checked Putnam and ICPC are still on, and the whole competitive programming fair, as for mechanical engineering, I'm not sure on that front since I'm not a mechanical engineer. In any case there is a number of "serious," competitions if "serious," competitions are the life and blood of a top engineer in development. Elon Musk was born a South African but later came to identify himself as an American because he identifies with the spirit of innovation. In any case, I disagree with the whole, "engineers should do "serious," competitions in college argument, how do you argue that someone who puts in the hard work to publish good research/builds cool stuff and happens to like building Rube Goldberg machines for *fun*, has no future as an engineer?
