Popurri: Mira Luisa / Vencido / Donde Estas Corazon / Viva San Antonio. Ruben Vela y su conjunto jammin' out live at the 1st Annual Ruben Naranjo Fest. in Alice, TX. 1999.
Rubén Vela actually was a very disciplined Tejano music accordionist. If you go too fast or too slow, you're playing either música norteña or música ranchera. Our tejano música allows for artful playing with beautiful chords and "adornos", especially on the bajosexto, as we heard Rubén de la Cruz playing beautifully tight along with the awesome playing of Rubén Vela. Tejanos love to dance and show their talent also; in other words, they don't like to dance when the music sounds like a cat fight.
Ruben Vela Sr., one of a kind and ONE OF THE GREATEST. RIP. He would always be seen at wakes when locals passed away and he would always wear a coat and tie. A true professional.
TRUE Tejano music from our beloved Rio Grande Valley. A musical art form that is OURS, by our people for our people. I wish the new acts would take a lesson from the Legends: No need for matching outfits and nonsense band names. Just learn the craft and play from the heart. I miss the days when you'd go to a baile or pachanga and people actually danced their asses off to this music and had a good time.
One of my biggest regrets, was not seeing the following performers live or in concert. Ruben Vela, Emilio Navaira, Jimmy García y Los García Bros., The Hometown Boys. This was just down the street from my house, here in Alice Texas. Man I wish I would’ve attended this.
I wasn't of age at the time, but definitely remember all the jams and my brothers going to some of those concerts. I also was in the military and guess what brought my mind home, yes sir, all those conjunto songs and the artists you just named.
