Correct me if I'm wrong, but the C96 actually loads with a clip from the top and not a magazine. The actual screen used DL-44 blaster and all the other blasters on set where functioning firearms. They even fired blanks in som of the scenes.

All you haters complaining about the seams and the screws/screwholes: piss off. I'm pretty sure this was meant to be a quick and easy mod, and all things considered it looks super nice.
I've been holding to one of those blasters for a couple of months now... And your tutorial is by far the easiest I've seen showing how to mod it. Great work!

I was going to do the same as you Chris, but had the same problem with the price pf getting the gun.. So I tried finding it in my local area, and while doing that a guy contacted me and offered to 3D-print a DL-44 for me. The price was good so I jumped on it! It looks fantastic! Took some extra work, but it is far better looking than the toy. So if you ever want to revisit the DL-44, consider doing that.
Honestly the Rubie's prop is amazing and such a simple build and only costs around 20 bucks to make (I'm including paint in this price estimate). The funny thing is so many cosplayers I know buy this thing in bulk every Halloween, spend 2 or 3 days painting it, and then sell it on Etsy for close to 100 bucks since it's so close to the actual prop. It's amazing what you can do with a drill, a can of spray paint, and some basic enamels or acrylics.
For those who are interested, Adam Savage does a Tested One Day Build where he does a DL-44. Lots of background info on what kind of gun was used, what stuff was added, and the film this gun was used in before Star Wars.
Awesome job as usual, you really brought it to life! One correction at 1:27, the real-life base is a Mauser pistol, which is from Germany, rather than Russia.
Very cool mate, I did something like this but I took the gun apart and glued a lot 1p coins in the handle and and spare parts to give weight too. I like the idea of a real scope!
Excellent work on customizing that blaster. I have one of those as well and thanks to your step by step instructions I'll be going ahead and doing this to my blaster as well to get it ready for any cons coming up here in Houston.
I’ve seen so many tutorials on this exact toy, AND I FOUND IT!!!!!! FOR $10!!!!! And it was a German C-96 Mauser with a German sniper scope, a barrel of a German minigun on an airplane, and a piece from a model airplane kit

Hey man, if you want a little bit more accurate DL-44 on a budget, the Disney Han Solo blasted (blue one from Disneyland) is awesome. The scope is raised (and is see through, can also be removed), it has all the pieces to it. And probably the best part, it has lights and sounds just like in the movie! About 20 bucks.
I love seeing how the team at Lucasfilm adapted real guns into blasters, even if nowadays they borderline just use real guns, even (presumably on accident?) keeping the giant, very visible magazines. But then again it raises the question, why would you even use a blaster when a gun exists. Also I think you were close, Han's DL-44 is definitely a Russian or axis design, I'm pretty sure the mauser machine pistol or some gun very similar to it was its basis, there's quite a few.
Great build! Suggestion - pick up some gun bluing - its a protective oil like substance that is used to protect the steel elements in the firearm and its what gives a gun its unique shades/tints.

I repainted my gun as well but I could say, a few things to really get that screen look would be filling in the screw holes in with bondo, and sanding down the seams of the gun, I didn't put a real scope either though but I'd really like to.
my current blaster is a repainted 1978 Kenner Han Solo blaster, but I am working on converting a Mauser C96 air pistol with metal parts for weight and accuracy.
beautiful work as always but if you get a chance you'll want to get your hands on the 1995 hasbro model it seems more spaced out and reflecs solo's blaster from new hope
The music at the end makes me think of how climatic the episode 9 final light saber fight with Rey is going to be. Also I have a feeling fin is going to get the Hans blaster.
The part at the end of the barrel has many names depending on its design and application. Flash hider, recoil compensator, muzzle brake, etc.. For Han Solo's DL-44, at least the one that toy is supposed to be, the flash hider was from a MG 81 machine gun used on Luftwaffe aircraft during World War II. Consequently, that machine gun was made by the same manufacturer as the C96 pistol that the blaster is based on.
The original gun was made from a Mauser C96 (chambered in 7.63x25 Mauser) with the flash hider (that muzzle cone) from a MG81 aircraft machine gun (chambered in 7.92mm), and a WWI era german Hensoldt Wetzlar Dialyt 3x scope on a custom mount.
Nice vid, used to have one like it that my dad painted over, btw it's a German C96, or the Broomhandle Mauser, depending on which you'd rather call it.
