Sometimes the hero you are meant to be lies just beneath the surface.
This summer, DreamWorks Animation dives into the turbulent waters of high school with a hilarious, heartfelt action comedy about a shy teenager who discovers that she’s part of a legendary royal lineage of mythical sea krakens and that her destiny, in the depths of the oceans, is bigger than she ever dreamed.
Sweet, awkward 16-year-old Ruby Gillman (Lana Condor, To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before franchise) is desperate to fit in at Oceanside High, but she mostly just feels invisible. She’s math-tutoring her skater-boy crush (Jaboukie Young-White, Ralph Breaks the Internet), who only seems to admire her for her fractals, and she’s prevented from hanging out with the cool kids at the beach because her over-protective supermom (Oscar® nominee Toni Collette, Knives Out), has forbade Ruby from ever getting in the water.
But when she breaks her mom’s #1 rule, Ruby will discover that she is a direct descendant of the warrior Kraken queens and is destined to inherit the throne from her commanding grandmother (Academy Award® winner Jane Fonda), the Warrior Queen of the Seven Seas.
The Kraken are sworn to protect the oceans of the world against the vain, power-hungry mermaids who have been battling with the Kraken for eons. There’s one major, and immediate, problem with that: The school’s beautiful, popular new girl, Chelsea (Emmy winner Annie Murphy, Schitt’s Creek) just happens to be a mermaid. Ruby will ultimately need to embrace who she is and go big to protect those she loves most.
Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken stars an extraordinary cast that includes Emmy winner Colman Domingo (Fear the Walking Dead) as Ruby’s supportive dad, Emmy nominee Sam Richardson (Veep) as Ruby’s enthusiastic uncle and Blue Chapman (Council of Dads) as Ruby’s cool little brother.
Directed by Academy Award®-nominated filmmaker Kirk DeMicco (Vivo, The Croods) and produced by Kelly Cooney Cilella, p.g.a. (Trolls World Tour, Trolls), with Faryn Pearl (The Croods: A New Age, Trolls World Tour) serving as co-director, the film features a comedic powerhouse supporting cast, including Emmy nominee Will Forte (The Last Man on Earth), Emmy nominee Nicole Byer (Nailed It!), Liza Koshy (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts; Work It), Ramona Young (Never Have I Ever), Eduardo Franco (Stranger Things), Echo Kellum (Arrow), and award-winning social media creator and podcaster Emma Chamberlain (Anything Goes podcast).
The film is written by Emmy winning South Park producer Pam Brady (Lady Dynamite) and Brian C Brown (Briarpatch) & Elliott DiGuiseppi (Lucy in the Sky). The executive producer is Mike Mitchell (director of next year’s Kung Fu Panda 4) and the co-producer is Rachel Zusser (associate producer, The Croods: A New Age).

>murders her entire kind and forces them into hiding from genocide after being left defenseless

This version is way more interesting and tense. I love their chemistry when they fight, I wish this was the final product. The fighting here is so dynamic and imaginative!!
@WhiteFireTheDragon
Getting Ruby's name wrong could have been a fun running gag with that sweet pay-off of Ruby calling her "Kelsea".
@user-xd9lo5uz7o
This scene must be used in the next sequel but in different story plot.
@gustavobarrosobarroso6114
I like the part where Shelsea is defeated and when she returns to normal size and starts talking Ruby gives her a glare and an angry look making her shut up and it's too cool

This is the cloaest we're getting to an ending with a Chelsea redemption, isn't it?
@shadowbeast9671
I would've preferred this ending if it meant for a sequel with Chelsea getting redemption. Though Ruby gaining those powers do feel like they came out of no where. Maybe having the other two Krakens regain their strength and rejoin the fight would've been a better way to defeat her as it would be less Deus ex machina.
@AC4Langstar
I have a feeling this is foreshadowing that Ruby is beginning to unlock her true powers, despite it being a deleted scene, plus in the scenes where the lights flicker when she feels strong emotions, that should be a sign
@tokboknyachannel
I want to see the sequel of this movie in the future, maybe about ruby tour the 7 seas and meet up with many different sea creature and monster land too
@damientobin9270
Better. This movie could've been great with a few more rewrites. Or, depending on the timeframe and perspective, a few less. Point is, it definitely had the wrong number.

"And right now, I need to protect you, from yourself"
@Jim_Alexander
I like this ending
@hiveemperor54
I’ve always thought that, if they make a sequel and Ruby and Nerissa have a rematch, they should do this. It would show just how much stronger Ruby could have gotten since their last match and it could set up a fight with a bigger antagonist, say the Leviathan.
@PutTai-hg6zc
Tentacles that can control sea water ? Sound interesting 😮
@alimitlive9890
"picture this, me- beautiful villian. Overcome childhood trauma and gets a second cha- "
@michaelbrent1536
Chelsea: Pictures this! me a beautiful villain Overcomes, childhood trauma, and get a second chance!
@dragongirl4110
It's a real shame that after all the teams hard work, love, passion and soul put into this movie that many people are getting laid off by Dream Works. Higher ups need to learn to appreciate the hard work and soul that is put into these stories.
@Darvadeliiiii
Ruby is actually Evil so is her grandmother because Chelsea just wanted her own kingdom and a place to live and that trident was special to her but her grandma tried to get it away from her because she thought krakens couldn’t be with mermaids
