The main difference between sirens and mermaids is that sirens are usually depicted as evil temptress’ that lure sailors to their deaths, while mermaids are usually depicted as peaceful, non-violent creatures that try to live their lives away from human interference.
Well now mermaids are evil and violent creatures who spend their lives trying to take over the seas by challengingthe krakens (but still usually far away from human interference like you said).
I can imagine myself in this scene either armed with an M16A4 with M203 Grenade Launcher or a Smith and Wesson M500 .500 Magnum and I take on the giant evil mermaid Chelsea/Nerissa with a lack of mercy.
The alternate version of this that was in the concepts showed that Agatha and Chelsea (yes, Chelsea and Nerissa were different in this version) had some history and that Agatha killed Chelsea’s mother, Nerissa. Then we had Ruby spending most of the fight taunting Chelsea in an attempt to make her slip up while fighting her, meanwhile her mother and grandmother get a more active role in the fight. There’s even a bit where Chelsea punches through a lighthouse and gets electrocuted, pretty brutal stuff. Then Ruby hides underwater from Chelsea and somehow gains the ability to literally manipulate the ocean itself with her mind, which she then uses to throw Chelsea around before she takes the trident and depowers Chelsea, no destroying it or anything. Then she scares Chelsea into submission. Much better than what we got, even though this version was still pretty cool.
There’s another concept that ends with Chelsea’s “hair” getting caught in the currents, leading to her being trapped in the bubble that the trident was previously in. Personally, I prefer the former concept, much more interesting. They could reuse the other concept version as a rematch in a hypothetical sequel before the main antagonist (which I have said before should definitely be Leviathan, closest they can get to Godzilla) comes to have the final fight with them.
Krakens: Super Sweet, Heroic, A Little Awkward, Powerful, Brave, Great Hair. Mermaids; Violent, Unpredictable, Selfish, Vain Narcissist, Mediocre Hair.

Alternate fight, when Nerrisa was about to kill Ruby by blasting energy from the Trident, Sam jumps in front of her and sacrifices his life for his sister, apparently killing him, Ruby, in rage tries to strangle the hell out of Nerrisa, but she gains the upper hand, and tries to kill Ruby, but Sam, now as a giant kraken, protects his sister, and sam beats Nerissa mercilessly, and he and Ruby do a sibling duel team takedown, defeating Nerrisa, Sam (in his giant kraken form) destroys the trident with his bare hands.
Nimona: Being Ruby’s friend was it all just a lie!? Narissa:Friend !? You thought someone like me could ever be friends with a monster like her!? Invincible: Don’t call her that!! FireBreather: Ruby is kind, sophisticated and she’s a good friend! Nimona: And she has our backs, unlike you! If you’re the one calling her a monster than you never knew her at all!
Chelsea/Nerissa: You thought someone like me could ever be friends with a monster like her!? Me to Chelsea/Nerissa: Shut the HELL up, Chelsea, Nerissa or whatever your real name is. Ruby is not a monster, she's a Kraken who will protect EVERYBODY she cares from FISHTAIL FREAKS like you!

After Nerrisa is defeated and reverted back to Chelsea Captain Gordon and his crew: Davey, Arthur Gillman, and Sam Gillman captured the mermaid. Captain Gordon: Woo hoo! Now that’s a successful monster hunt. We got us a little mermaid, Davey! Chelsea: Please, please, please, please. I’m not evil. I’m just pretty…and misunderstood. Me: Shut up, you fishtail freak!!!
I can picture myself going to deliver a blow to her shoulder upon hearing the giant evil mermaid say that to Ruby. Chelsea/Nerissa: You know what's really pathetic? That you thought someone like me could ever be friends with a monster like you! Me: SHUT...UP!!! Armed with any powerful handgun either a Wildey, a Smith and Wesson M500, or a Magnum Research BFR, I shoot the giant evil mermaid in the right shoulder.
