Trev gives his thoughts on 'Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken', the newest film from DreamWorks Animation, and the first family-friendly Monday Mystery Movie at Regal Theaters.
No it is NOT Turning Red meets Luca. It’s Turning Red meets Luca meets THE LITTLE MERMAID 2! Yes the Direct to Video Sequel was also taken from. Picture this: A young woman who thinks she doesn’t fit in on land, with a mother from the ocean has her heritage kept a secret from her for her whole life thus far. When her heritage is discovered, she is still being lied to and not being told the truth so she runs off into the ocean. She meets another character who befriends them and teaches her to embrace the ocean. This other character brings up needing a Trident so our protagonist breaks into where it’s kept and takes it. Suddenly, due to the crushing betrayal of her mother, the girl gives the Trident to her “Friend” who ultimately betrays her but is ultimately is defeated when the Trident is taken away from her. In the end, the Land and Sea are United. Now what movie did I describe? If you guessed Ruby Gillman, you’d be right. If you guessed The Little Mermaid 2: Return to the Sea, you’d also be right. Just change the Mermaids to Krakens and “Ursula’s Crazy Sister” into a Mermaid and the movie closely resembles Ruby Gillman.
This is why everyone theorised a stupid redemption for the mermaid where she and Ruby would end up together. I’m pretty sure everyone subconsciously knew this was going to be generic but were praying that we’d get some sort of twist.
I think everyone was just expecting another Puss In Boots 2 and set their expectations too high. I don't think this film is TRYING to be as epic as that film, but instead be a simpler, funny, familiar story with charm and heart, just like Pixar did with Luca and Turning Red. Treading on familiar tropes does not automatically make a movie bad. Shame on Dreamworks for not promoting it that well.
And just like that you earned a new subscriber! I agree with everything you said. This movie could have been a lot better though. If they changed the premise and made the dynamic between Chelsea and Ruby more developed. But that’s just me.
And plus dreamworks made this movie to spite the little mermaid because Chelsea is a direct ripoff and parody of the little mermaid it’s so horrible and hateful
...is the moment I was like "Seriously?" At least this movie had SOME charm and tried to tell an original story rather than soullessly rehash what didn't need to be rehashed.
@@TrevsMovieReviews263 you're blowing it out of proportion. This movie was decent. Like nothing new, nothing special, but i had fun. The character was nice too. The reeboot was.... ugly, lets start with that. That movie at least looked better
Yeah, I already knew Ruby Gillman: Teenage Kraken wasn't worth watching in theaters the minute I saw both the first and second trailers. And I also already knew that this movie was going to be a box office bomb considering the fact that this movie is coming out on the same day as Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny.
Ruby gillman teenage kraken is more a combination of turning red luca and the little mermaid no not the remake of the little mermaid 2023 the animated movie of the little mermaid from disney
I would’ve liked it if Chelsea was Nerissa’s daughter who still went to high school but was sent there by her mother to spy on the gillman’s to end all krakens and with a toxic upbringing she would think that krakens were monsters and was rival to ruby but as soon as they discovered each other’s secrets they would bond realize that mermaids and krakens were wrong about each other. They would’ve kept their friendship a secret until Agatha and Nerissa found out they would be in huge fights with their mothers and run off they decide that they were better off without their families try to find a new home in the ocean. Like the original they find the trident and nerissa comes in and takes it trapping Ruby. Chelsea tries to help but Nerissa traps her to for being a traitor and goes up to the surface with the other mermaids to end all krakens. For the most part the climax plays the same but with more krakens and mermaids mid battle however Ruby and Chelsea emerge and tell them that they didn’t need to fight and that mermaids and krakens are the same and if the fighting continues nothing will change and that they could lose everything and it’s up to them to make the right choice everyone but Nerissa sees that it’s true. Nerissa tries to attack Grandmamah but Ruby protects her and was dragged nearly to the bottom of the ocean they tussle for the trident with would end with Nerissa’s death. Ruby returns to the surface and embraces her mother and apologizes for running away and Agatha apologizes for lying to her all her life. Chelsea swims over asks Ruby if she’s ok and Ruby hands her the trident and apologizes for her mother and Chelsea says it’s ok she raises the trident a declares that the mermaids will begin a new era of peace with the land and sea. Grandmamah declares the same and tells ruby that’s she is proud of her for being the kraken that she’s couldn’t and that she would be a great ruler one day and the ends with humans, krakens and mermaids adjusting to their new lives together and now Ruby and Chelsea are free to be themselves.
Well Dreamworks/Universal are known for ripping off movies as their way of saying F You to that company. In this case it's Disney, and that's what I like about Universal.
I watched it today and I like it, it's not best but its ok. The animation is good but not better then The Bad Guys (I hadn't seen Puss in Boots the Last Wish). The story was simple, you kinda know what's going to happen. But I do like Ruby Gillman design both as a normal & fully kraken form. I never seen Turning Red so I don't know that movie is.
