Just got word that Melanie passed away. My sister Gloria used to play this song over and over back in the 70's. Gloria passed away last year from cancer at 67. Rest in peace Gloria... rest in peace Melanie. Melanie did not need all the computers that today's "singers" need. Pure real voice!!
One voice, one guitar, no big show, no effects no flashing lights, no gimmicks ,no suggestive moves. The days when you could sit and listen to a natural singer.
Put Melanie in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame posthumously. It's an unbelievable shame that she wasn't inducted in her lifetime. Such a generational icon and talent! RIP beautiful soul. Cheers\=/\=/
I’ve given up on the HOF. There are too many talented artists not in it. Melanie is in my personal HOF. That’s all that matters to me. RIP to one who had both an angelic face and voice.
@@robertosborne8694 I'm not sure which list is longer Robert. The list of people who should be in the HOF but aren't, or the list of people who are in and don't belong there. At any rate you're right, we know how much we loved her and how much she meant to our generation. Cheers\=/\=/
My sister,15 years between us, (her older) LOVED Melanie . She married when I was 8 . I was devastated . She came to me at her Wedding reception and told me shed left me something on my bed. It was her Melanie Records. She died a couple of years later. NOBODY could sing like Melanie ,but I hear my Sis ,nearly 50 years later ,every time. Thanks Melanie , im owe you one girl xx
Something to trash about RS/Mick's perf? For me, he's generally impeccable, compelling beyond words on ballads like Wild Horses.I don't need to knock anyone to savor Melanie. Her recorded verses on this are sublime too IMO, yet the choruses chaotic, like she got different producers.
She was a singular talent - by that I mean she didn't sound like anyone else and no one sounded like her. Such an amazing strong voice. She hit when I was in high school. We all loved her songs. Sad to hear today that she's passed on to the next world. RIP Melanie Safka
I am 67 this birthday ( less than a fortnight away). When I first heard this lady sing this number I was blown away, I was still at school.18/04/2023 maybe 50 years later, still feel the roots of my soul and thank the talent of people like this for keeping it real THANK YOU LOVE IT.
I didn't think when I left this comment I'd be returning to express my sadness at Melanie's passing. One of the greatest voices of our time who really captured the hope and optimism of the 60s. Rest in peace Melanie. We will miss you.
AMEN AND VIETNAM the Fighting Strength, Lynn Hampton, Benn Hoe Mash Nurse. Many THEORIES ON IF WE WON . HAVE SUPPER AT A THAI RESTAURANT. IT'S PAST NOON IN BANKOK.
Brilliant version of a great song. Melanie puts so much emotion into all her songs, a singer who should've had much more success than she achieved. A minimal delivery, just voice and guitar, but that's all what was needed. Brilliant!
I was fifteen when Melanie released this song from her album candles in the rain 1970 written by Keith Richards I still play it today 2024 this song has stayed with me my whole life
Up until i heard of Melanie Safka's death, i only knew of the Rolling Stones version. Although the Rolling Stones version is good, i actually very much enjoyed this version. She was much more talented then some remembering her for "Brand New Key". Of course, people who followed her throughout her career most likely already knew this. I love this version. I just want to keep playing it. Thank you Melanie for sharing your talents and yourself in this world. May you rest in peace.
Melanie always brings me to tears. There is something so deeply emotive in her sound...no matter what she sings - and she is extraordinary beautiful...XXXXXXX
So love this woman and her music from the beginning when I heard Lay Down on a jukebox in Island Heights, NJ! Never stopped following her as she’s an original American icon and needs to be fully recognized for what she gave, artistically, to the world. 🎶❤️🎶❤️
my beautiful granddaughter Brianna soon to turn 18 chose your version of this amazing song to sing for her senior solo as she graduates from performance academy in West Virginia, i had a dream you were in the audience and came on stage and sang the last chorus with her....i woke up in tears, thank you for making music that is still tattooed in the mind of a sixty year old woman and still being discovered and loved by a 17 yr old who is ready to go out and change the world. We love you for being the soundtrack for our lives from teen to grandma
Thanks Kathy, I'm going to be 60 this December and love those times, this song, beautiful memories, and my two young adult children grew up listening to these types of music and just love it 👏👏👏👏👏
When I was a kid I had a huge crush on Melanie. I was mesmerized by her photo on the Gather Me album as an 11 year old boy. All these years later and I am now an old man at 60 and still think she is a beautiful woman inside and out. I don't know her personally but from what I gather by her singing, stories and demeanor she is a lovely soul. When she sings her voice brings me peace. I cannot say that about too many singers. Melanie. Joni Mitchell. Thank you Melanie, for the years of pleasure you have given me with yout voice and art. I still have my original copy of Stoneground Words on Vinyl. Time to put it on for a spin.
I must have played this album more times than I can remember. Listening to it today Melanie"s voice transports me back to the early 70s when anything seemed possible as we smoked and drank through the night. I'm 71 now...catch your dreams before they slip away.
I had a tear in my eye when I heard yesterday that Melanie had left us. I was 7 years old in 1970 and just getting into music. God Bless you Melanie and may you rest in Eternal Peace Tony in Portsmouth England.
its gonna be my funeral song ...it's been my constant companion ...been a Stones and Dylan fan since I was 14 ....Melanie , blows everyone out the window with this version
How can a version be so incredibly better than the original? Playing without the minor chord gives it such a strength ! This is usually the first song I play in english when I’m with friends Love you Melanie…from Chile
The other brilliant version of a song is Joe Cocker singing A Little Help From My Friends which outshines the Beatles' original. I think either Lennon or McCartney said " That's how we should have done it. "
Thank you very much for this RU-vid Channel...thank you very much for all beautiful songs and videos. My mother loved your song Ruby Tuesday so much, that she called me Melanie when I was born. Kind regards and love from Germany,Düsseldorf.🐞🙏😊👀🎤🎵🎧🎶💕💓🙂
I was a teen, years ago, when while listening Melanie's voice i was going...i don't know where. Falling in love with life, with her, with music, with everything. As a radio producer i never stopped playing her songs often and i will never do. I am grateful. Not only for your songs but also for the solid dignity you brought as a public figure.
More than a cover I think this is like a new song “based” on the older one … please note that she eliminated the minor chord …plays only in major chords ,making it stronger, less “nerdy”😬
I have never been able to understand "along the watchtower". I mean, a watchtower is a vertical thing whereas "along" is essentially horizontal. Many songs have nonsenses like this. I wish I could stop myself analysing lyrics. It's a curse. Try getting me started on American Pie ....
This is the way to make a song your own. I know life has not always treated you right Melanie, but you are leaving a legacy of such intensely powerful performances like this that people like me can only be thankful to have been breathing the same air as such a genuine artist.
We just don't have these kinds of singers anymore. Girl power in the 60's and 70's!!! I loved Melanie and her unique voice. When I'm down, these songs bring me back up. I could crawl back into this era easily.
Just an absolutely beautiful song sung from the heart with unrivalled tone ,depth and pitch . A song I go back to time and time again. Thank you Melanie it always gives me something ! X
Melanie always blows me away! You can both see and feel her emotional energy. She is one of the most talented and beautiful natural vocalists that I have ever heard and that says a lot from this old madman.
I can’t express how much I love her version of this song. My dad played it for me and after that I had it on repeat with my earbuds in and eyes closed.
Melanie had (has) the sexiest voice on the planet - bar none ,I have adored her since 1970 . Most of the younger generation has never heard of her but all one needs to do is sing one line of Brand New Key and they say "oh yeah now I know ". Even now her voice is the scale by which I measure the worth of a female artist's voice and every now and then I will here a young artist who sounds a bit like Melanie and it makes me smile.
Right?!!! Her voice is so unique...I was raised listening to Melanie, since I was 5...I'm 50 yrs older...and I will never stop!!! Love her...I still have the vinyl lp of " CANDLES IN THE RAIN"....." Let your white bird smile up and the ones who stand and frown " 🕊️🕊️🕯️🕯️🕯️♥️♥️♥️♥️♥️🕊️🕊️
