Ruddy Turnstone, arenaria interpres, feeding techniques are more varied than their name suggests. Turnstones do indeed frequently turn stones to look for prey items which include small insects, crabs and crustaceans, but they also use other feeding strategies. Other Turnstone feeding techniques include picking prey from the water, flicking seaweed aside, opening shellfish and ploughing through seaweed. In this video I show you these feeding techniques and suggest a tongue-in-cheek alternative name for Ruddy Turnstones. Turnstones are one of the most charismatic species of shorebirds, often becoming quite tame and are found all over the world.
