I just found your channel three or four days ago. I love your teaching, you articulate very well, verbally as well as on the pad. I've been playing for about 45 years, cover bands, other day job, you know... About 2 years ago I recommitted to sitting down at the practice pad, working on rudiments, the Stone book, and it has been so exciting to really have stuck with it long enough to improve. I mean, when I was gigging all the time, every weekend, I didn't practice, didn't set the kit up at home, no pad work, blah, blah. So I am on an exciting journey once again, your videos are priceless, such great info, I'm stealing everything I possibly can 🙂. Your commentary on working out the perfection of rudiments with the intention to enhance your musicality, how it applies to your whole being as a drummer/musician, is absolutely spot on!! Getting back to rudiments on my practice pad, honestly one to two hours a day minimum, then I go to the kit and play, but particularly the rudiments on the pad have enhanced my musicality incredibly. As I work through the Stone rudiment book, I tend to get to a certain speed on a given exercise, and then move on to the next one. And I definitely get a therapeutic effect as well, which is coll. Because I absolutely agree that these exercises are meant to inform our entire perspective as to how we approach our instrument and express ourselves. Thank you, such a pro 👍👍

Studying rudiments has helped me greatly to become a better musician, to enjoy and express myself on drums far more than I could before and to be good enough to have the privilege of being paid to play drums. Thank you very much for this series Phil, it's gold standard information and it is helping me greatly with the path I've chosen to be on.

Wow! Phil, it’d be amazing to experience you do a series like: “Chi Gong and the Drum Set”, w/circulating your energy through you body, drawing from deep resource of dan tien, or chakra centers, then through your limbs. The how, what and why of connecting with your band mates energetically during practice, then on stage. Creating a swirling vortex of energy, as everyone in this unique state, playfully, with joy, non attachment, and free of any expectation, transmit multi layers of outer, inner, and most inner secrets of being, through music. Where the sum total of your collective expression is exponentially greater than any one individual. The possibilities are mind boggling… Anyway, thanks for introducing the chi ball in your hands. That’s a first, a very welcomed first, and much appreciated. Now, to consciously do it while playing 😊… (BTW: I experienced an error notice trying to purchase your, “Left Foot Clave” book.)

@@TruthSayer5589 man sounds like you know a lot more about that stuff then i do haha. I would be at a loss to explain in that amount of detail. But it sounds great! By the way i sent you the book by email:)

@@philmaturanodrumsYeah, sounds good in theory. It would sure be amazing to put into practice! The development our chosen instrument and an instrument we all possess, but few learn to play - our energy body. I’d love to hear more about what Freddie Grubber taught on the subject. I did not receive an email. Left foot clave is a topic I’d love to take a deep dive into. Thanks for posting this series. Your drumming is an inspiration 👍😊

Great to hear your thoughts on that Phil, I'm making progress with the singles excercises from a previous video daily, but as you say, more of a meditative excercise, and to really understand to be loose and relaxed whilst playing. It's funny because even the stroke on the pad sounds better when you're playing relaxed and I know that's going to transfer on to the drums

One drum teacher I had wanted me to apply to the kit, all I was studying with him right away. I see the rudiments as building blocks that help me to play things I wouldn't be able to play otherwise, I may not use a 5 stroke roll on a gig at all, but the ability to play accents anywhere in time will help me play the songs much better, and studying the rudiments help me to do that. The rudiments or portions of the rudiments are used in real music all the time, we just have to listen and watch drummers play, and we will see how they are used. Yes I agree Phil, to play the rudiments perfectly on a pad is okay, but in the real world of music we have to make the songs or the set list the focus of our attention, not the technical things we may be studying at the time.

Exactly!! Working on the pad, rudiments, has done that exact same thing for me as you mentioned, apply dynamics, or accents in places that I couldn't before! Keep drumming brother 🥁
