"Next time you bow your head I want you to tell your god, that my God is looking for him." - wow! best line of the whole thing! God wants to redeem even the worst, most racist people. Thank you for that reminder! Beautiful poem
So, I love Rudy's poetry, and I think this one is powerful. I get what he's saying. . . however, I'm a christian, republican, and live in Arizona. However, I have not tolerance nor hate but acceptance for all, and I believe god feels the same way.
Isaiah 51:1 "Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness and who seek the LORD: Look to the rock from which you were cut and to the quarry from which you were hewn;
I've gotta be honest, y'all- I'm a gay atheist living in the deep, deep South. I see people like this every day, and I always have and, until I finally graduate and have a chance to get out of here, always will, and I have never heard them described so perfectly. This is amazing.
Wow! What a simply smart and forward thinking person! I wish people would be more like him and stand up for their beliefs rather than sit down and listen to the beliefs of others.
That's actually wonderful to hear, but sadly, there are too many ignorant believers of a hateful god in this world, and people begin to stereotype. I think Rudy based this poem off of what he's seen throughout his life. I, too, believe God loves everyone.
Sometimes, we have a really biased opinions on something and people will say something like " God hates gays" but he doesn't. Rudy starts out by saying that God doesn't hate anyone, he says the God he believes in doesn't hate people. You see he believes in THE God, this has nothing to do with being racist. I'm not really sure where you got that from. He wants people to understand that a lot of the things the people say or think about God are from within ourselves. He said the next time we talk
@TPRS313 I believe he's talking to the people that this applies to in the south not all southern people and I dont think he compares john mccain to nazis and racists but its a metaphore for the consertative because the people who say the most about believing in God are the same ones who have the republican views but are the most hypocritcal i wouldnt take it personally just a metaphoric way of speaking to the negttive aspects of those things not saying its all negative .. just a thought
I think he's basically saying that the elitist, super-conservative, "Christians" that use the phrase "god hates" before the type of people that they don't agree with and attempt to use a distorted, self-serving image of HIM to justify their own bigotry and hatred of different groups of people aren't praying to the real God, but to one they created in their own image.
Morgan Camille colssians 2:18-21 biblehub.com/colossians/2-21.htm and romans 10:2-4 2For I testify about them that they have a zeal for God, but not in accordance with knowledge. 3For not knowing about God's righteousness and seeking to establish their own, they did not subject themselves to the righteousness of God. 4For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes and because of Romans 9:30-32. never though I'd see it spoken though :)
Furthermore, states along the bible belt are the states who protest gay marriage most vehemently. So I'm not sure what problem you have with this piece.
I hope you realize that white folk who live on the bible belt aren't a certain race. Race, as defined by Merriam-webster; noun: a category of humankind that shares certain distinctive physical traits.
