I dont believe he's underrated due to circumtances related to his sexuality, but due to lack of sensitivity of music listeners. We all need to be talented as music listeners if we want to value a good song or singers, and this is unluckily very uncommon these days. Pet Shop Boys is the same idea. Not everybody is ready to enjoy and appreciate such as amazing artists.
I love that he sings such a dark, pleading and angry lyric to such an upbeat, energetic melody. It really nails both the defiance and the desperation. Such an incredible wordsmith, with such incredible songcraft
so glad to hear him play this solo live - it's how I want to learn it. There are so my dynamics and superlatives in this: joy, desperation, longing, compulsion, self-deprecating humor, drugs, very cool rhymes - totally a cabaret piece de resistance
It is proof that you dont really need anything else than your ability.Long live Rufus welove ❤ u round the world.Thank u for everything you ve done for music .
Love this guys piano playing. I can hear the samba in the hook (I always sway my hips when I hear that Am7-D7-Gmaj7 shuffle) and Beethoven in the bridge. A great musician. Rufus, what I would do to be your backup singer, piano player!!!!
+Andrew Arango I would love to do a duet with Rufus. His voice and mine have the exact same range and vibrato. I flip coins with you to sing with him.......
This is probably the best version of this song I have heard. I love to hear that he has gotten better. He was always good, but listen to the fluency with which he draws us from one emotion to the next. He has a power now, that was still a fledgling ability when this song was written. Rufus is so much sexier now, and sounds so much more strong than ever.
It's not very often a songs a classic before most people have even heard it. Caught him by accident (touring with Tori Amos)at The Fox in St Louis back in the late 90's... Blown away.
The first time I heard about him and listened to his live performance was when he opened a Sting's concert in Las Vegas almost 20 years ago. He sang this exact song and wore a red shirt like here (maybe the same one). I became a fan during that song because the whole thing was so beautiful... Still love this performance to this day... Thank you for uploading.
My partner and I had the privilege to see him in concert in our town (Harrisburg, PA) two weeks ago. Fantastic! Charming, brilliant pianist composer and lyricist, and very funny! Opening act was his Aunt..Sloan Wainwright. They rocked the audience!
[Lyrics] Cigarettes and chocolate milk These are just a couple of my cravings Everything it seems I like's a little bit stronger A little bit thicker, a little bit harmful for me If I should buy jellybeans Have to eat them all in just one sitting Everything it seems I like's a little bit sweeter A little bit fatter, a little bit harmful for me And then there's those other things Which for several reasons we won't mention Everything about 'em is a little bit stranger A little bit harder A little bit deadly It isn't very smart Tends to make one part So brokenhearted Sitting here remembering me Always been a shoe made for the city Go ahead accuse me of just singing about places With scrappy boys faces have general run of the town Playing with prodigal sons Takes a lot of sentimental Valiums Can't expect the world to be your Raggedy Andy While running on empty you little old doll with a frown You got to keep in the game Retaining mystique while facing forward I suggest a reading of a Lesson in Tightropes Or Surfing Your High Hopes or Adios, Kansas It isn't very smart Tends to make one part So brokenhearted Still there's not a show on my back Holes or a friendly intervention I'm just a little bit heiress, a little bit Irish A little bit Tower of Pisa Whenever I see ya So please be kind if I'm a mess Cigarettes and chocolate milk Cigarettes and chocolate milk
When Rufus was born, father Loudon Wainwright III wrote 'Rufus Is A Tit Man'. Never has a song been less prophetic. This song is fucking incredible! Thanks for posting ;-)
He's the second artist I've come across who can sing amazingly, and who has a lisp. Lacey, the lead singer of Flyleaf, has one too. And both of them are amazing singers. I seriously adore this guy, his voice is gorgeous.
WOW! I'm so glad i found your music its .... Words wont do it justice. It moves me, engages me, and causes feelings. All that music should do to you... Your really great. Thank you for the music
I have listening to Rufus for the last 2 hours to prepare to go see him with my girlfriend fairly soon. The man is very talented. Great songs and in this day and age all credit to what he does. His voice is a bit too pretty if one has prefers a Springsteen or Seger but that is my only quibble. Rufus will have a long and great career.
He's purely amazing, I mean...its hard to find artists that sound just like they do on records...and he's one that does. Also, his music is just so captivating. His music is so mild, and its a good artist to have in your collection.
2008, sitting on a terrace somewhere in Rajasthan making folk people listen to this, to today revisiting that day. It's etched in my memory. oh how we grow up from 21 to 31. F-
He has the most peculiar way of singing and I think its why I like him so much...this man is incredible. If you have not seen it you have to watch Hallelujah..it will bring you to tears.
A great voice and it was great too the fact of listening to him in Salamanca, SPAIN, while he was wearing like a bullfighter!!!. This is a land of bulls. That's sensibility and sense of humor. I appreciate him. Thanks so much. The sound is very good. Have a nice day.
Rufus... so many years later and I still remember the exact time I heard you play this live, my very first time hearing you, I think very early on, your first time live on NPR. My life changed. I felt like I had discovered a new continent. You are epic. So glad for your happiness now.
Thank you thank you thank you. This was the video that really made me fall for Rufus beyond just Hallelujah, guh, and then I remember searching frantically for it after they took it off. Thank you so, so much. (And oh, Rufus.)
this is only song my son, now almost 7, would calm down to when he was a baby. he claims he doesn't remember it, but i beg to differ. thanks rufus for making our long drives to the beach a tad more bearable way back when.
Love Rufus like a fantastic Artist... and like a handsom Man :) I am proud-to-be gay from Poland; proud thanks to Rufus, too. I was at Your concert in Warsaw'08 and will be this year !!!
this is one of my favoite songs ever, by any artist! Hes so good in concert and a totaly sweet and down to eath person if you ever get the great fortune of meeting him!
I love him. I'm always between meloncholy and extreme happiness when I listen to him sing. It's a mixture of extreme emotions, and I think that's what makes him unlike anybody else.
