It’s easy to say that’s how it was back then but as far as I’m concerned that’s not toughness, that’s thuggery and an act of pure cowardice. If that happens out on the street, he’d have been arrested and rightfully so. Nothing more than common assault and in this case, serious assault. The player should have gone straight to the police and had him charged. The game does not protect players from this kind of lowlife act. He was sent off no less than 26 times during his career. Gutless wonder.

Na Ive played in some real clashes and I dont see it like that. The best thing the referee could have done was leave him on the paddock. When shit gets messy like that the justice comes when he runs the ball, he just set the rules of etiquette and if that was me next time he ran the ball I would have come in second man with a flying elbow to head . I played with some real knuckle draggers over the years and one game there was over a dozen of us (both teams) up at the hospital getting stitched and patched up, doesnt matter how tough or competent you are with your fists , if you play up like that fool against 13 other men then someone is going to have your number.. I dont watch modern league anymore except for club games. The pro stuff is just boring , watching coaches play chess with their pawns
