Worthless content. A single shot for velocity does virtually NOTHING to depict the real velocity of a particular load. What is needed is an average velocity from at least five shots. The videographer does not understand the basics of velocity testing, too bad he has zero cred. A waste of my time. Learn statistical testing dude. You want to produce good content but you lack basic knowledge, too bad.

If you bullet makers would make a 101/115 grain 45 ACP+p loaded to mild "super" specs shaped with a 357 sig size flat tip fmj id appreciate it. Sorry but the 45 has been made wrong for a long time. And it doesn't need to be a hollow point. Which have literally been pointless... The solid copper light weight rounds are much more effective and you not only have the ability to carry more ammo, the weapons last longer, have less recoil, and have far less reliability issues I.e. heavy hard cast issues with some calibers. Look at Underwood 130 grain, and Grind Hard 111 grain. You really don't need the special defender tip with 45, but it does help. I just can't believe the guns and ammo community is still way behind. A 101 grain fmj with a small flat tip would be amazing for so many reasons in 45 auto. It would also be making mid 44 magnum power out of a carbine like this. Baruk Hashem

Great comparison tests. For lighter weight bullets, 10mm definitely gains more velocity going from 5” to 16” compared to .45 ACP. However, things get interesting with a 230 grain bullet. Two different loads of 230 grain went ~879 fps. My LC 45 with a 16” barrel pushed them just about 1,000 fps for a 120 fps gain. For supersonic loads the 10mm looks strong, but if you are limited to the speed of sound then the .45 ACP version looks better. Especially since you can run .45 ACP +P or, even better, hand load to get just under the speed of sound. Same speed, same weight, bigger diameter => better IMHO anyway.

@cheryltysver4819 4 дня назад
@@JonFox-t5x The velocity difference is not going to be significantly different due to the distance parameter... not at this velocity regime and with these bc's and l/ d ratios even though they are much lower than the higher l/d ratio's and sectional densities encountered with most rifle projectiles. I know that it is counter-intuitive given the much lower bc's and sectional densities of the pistol bullets, but the velocity fall off of handgun bullets is less than you would expect and when using high ballistic coefficient bullets at the lower velocity levels encountered with handgun rounds the velocity retention is pretty amazing even though the bullet drop can be a bit of a challenge! The velocity differences shown are more a function of the chronograph reading differences... which is quite interesting!

Regardless of use, I friggin love these PCC's & sub guns.🤣🤣🤣 This is precisely why I am getting back into reloading. Commercialy available 10mm is going to be using a fast burning pistol powder, in most cases. I think playiing around with different burn rate powders and barrel lengths, is going to yield some very impressive results.👍 Especially for hunting rounds...👊💥 I really need to get the chronograph out and test from the 8" barrel Banshee.🤦‍♂
@cheryltysver4819
@cheryltysver4819 5 дней назад
Check the Underwood loadings and the Hodgdon annual manuals. They will show the velocities attainable via the different burn rate propellants, along with the pressures generated. Compare the velocities achieved to the pressures. Often you will find powders that give maximum velocities at considerably lower maximum average pressures! This is the first U-tube video that I ended up taking notes from and you picked the two best chronographs (the Oehler could also be included here though a bit more complicated) for the comparison! Outstanding job! P.S.: The comparison between the Garmin and Caldwell was especially useful in that I have not tried the Garmin yet and was considering getting one. Some of the tests that I have done in the past included loads that ran well over 5,000 feet per second... and the Caldwell and Oehler were the only chronographs that would reliably read bullet speeds at this level. The Oehler 35P was able to read velocities up to and beyond the point of hyper-velocity gouging... which can start in the low to mid 6,000 fps range. The highest that the Oehler read was 6,980 fps with a 220gr. monolithic L/D 1 projectile. Hyper-velocity gouging occurred during that shot and the barrel was retired! The barrel length was 45"! Corrected to muzzle velocity the projectile speed was ~ 7,100 fps...

@@gavincline209 I've seen some of the Liberty gel tests on a few calibers show it tending to dispense almost all of its energy in the first ~12in or so of gel. The majority of the 223/556 loads are probably going to penetrate better, but the Liberty 10mm might be better for urban/apt building setups where over-penetration might be a serious concern? I think it might make for some very interesting comparisons and testing.

Shooting The Bull 410 did something very similar to this several years ago, he took a Glock 21 and converted it to various calibers, including 10MM, and also used a MechTech Systems carbine conversion with a 16" barrel, and observed similar velocity increases. He used a number of Underwood, Hornady and Buffalo Bore loads, one with a controlled expansion solid copper hollow point. In gel, the controlled expansion hollow point sheared off the petals when fired into gel at 3' compared to the advertised performance from the 5" handgun barrel, not surprising since it had ~200FPS increase from the 16" carbine conversion. The videos are still up on his channel, although the channel has been inactive for over 5 years now.

So with "only" ~200 fps increase from the less than 200 grain bullets, it begs the question you brought up at the beginning, what is the difference out of a barrel length between the two, like the 12" banshee? Also wondering if the ruger 10mm can handle .40cal ammo, and if so, how do the speed ratings compare? Fantastic testing, keep it up!
@exothermal.sprocket
@exothermal.sprocket 5 дней назад
Not sure the difference between the chronographs. Perhaps Garmin is reading the velocity as soon as it enters the 'radar window' close up, whereas the Caldwell is taking it down range, somewhat. These blunt pistol projectiles really do shed velocity quickly in air friction due to their very high drag. The rest of the difference is probably up to the differences in chronographs, which don't always agree (insert the late Harrell line here). I'm going to trust the radar-based chrono, every time. Rimless semi-auto cartridges seem to gain the least in carbines, compared to rimmed cartridges such as .357, .41, .44, .454 etc. I'm sure hand-loading could achieve a good deal more, but it's down to the length vs. diameter efficiency of a cartridge relative to the projectile shape (short, fat, blunt, heavy). The rimmed cartridges just seem to perform better in this regard. Put a Buffalo Bore .357 or .44 in a 5.5" revolver, and then shoot the same in a 20-inch carbine and you'll DOUBLE your energy.

Nothing beats empirical testing. BBTI is ok for theoretical analysis, but velocity results from barrel to barrel are going to change based on twist rate, powder used, and action lock time. If your twist rate is tighter, then the bullet loses linear velocity to angular momentum from the centripetal force of the bullet spinning against the rifling, converting translational kinetic energy into rotational kinetic energy. If your powder burn rate and composition has less potential then same effect. If you have weaker springs, then the action won't stay locked under stress and will bleed gasses, reducing pressure and then the bullet loses the needed momentum to overcome friction and centripetal forces slowing it down. The less energy the bullet has, the more rapid the deceleration due to drag. So balancing excess with necessity is the key here.

@Hornet135

Ballistics by the inch is not theoretical. Velocity loss due to faster twist is probably not measurable, and springs don’t help the bolt stay locked on direct blowback guns.
@jasonshults368
@jasonshults368 5 дней назад
And in addition to the criticisms above, the SLOWER projectile is going, the LESS energy it has, and the SLOWER a projectile is going, the more SLOWLY it bleeds velocity and energy. So you're utterly wrong about that, too. Maybe stick with "fisics."

@shannonbarattini5772 In other words, gotta shoot it to see 👀 what the bullets gonna do.
@Hornet135
@Hornet135 4 дня назад
@@michaelchilds-qn3bl I don’t think you know what theoretical means. The recoil spring on direct blowback does nothing to keep the bolt closed longer. If you want to keep the bolt closed longer you add mass to the bolt/buffer. The recoil spring is only there to cycle the bolt back into battery. That’s a big misconception. I don’t even know why you bring up twist rate as it doesn’t even practically matter. It’s a single digit kind of effect on velocity that you would struggle to identify just due the variation of each round and precision of the Chronograph. 10mm guns are usually 1:10” or 1:16”, right? This one is using the slower twist to satisfy your need for 5 more ft/s.

Nice job / great info on this round and pistol vs carbine comparison. I’ve been waiting for a 10mm PCC to pair up with my S&W M&P 10 pistol. Love the versatility of this round as I handload all the bullet weights. The only thing that gives me hesitation on buying the Ruger is the price. But maybe it will drop some after the intro frenzy cools off a bit.

That smith ten might be my next. The stribog ten is on my mind a bit, and I think smith ought to mimic that design in their style. If we judge by the success of these others it would absolutely succeed and be an american product.

Interesting outcome. Thought the heavier bullets might see somewhat higher velocities than what occurred. I own the LC in .45 ACP and have sought the same testing. This 10mm is intriguing

Looking at your first video and your handloads significantly underperforming, I looked at load data and that titegroup load was near minimums. Did you run your handloads through the chrono to see if that’s why the bolt was slow and why it barely puked the brass out a few times?

Sweet fpe increase especially with the hotter loads, How about loading up and testing 1 of your blue dot hand loads to get over 1000 fpe that would be awesome.

What would be the practical use for this?

Seems like the hotter ammo saw the most increase not just the lightest. The Sig ammo is one example.

Hmmmm, I suspect that both of your chronographs are telling you the truth. The Garmin was giving you muzzle velocity and your Caldwell was a few yards downrange. You could take advantage of that and learn impact velocity and energy at hunting ranges. Find out how close the tables are to telling us the truth.
