Review of the Ruger Hawkeye in 6,5 Creedmoor, an alternative rifle away from the main brands with some interesting character and immediate performance on target
My Dad just won this rifle in a raffle. Twenty dollar ticket! He will be 87 years old in April. I can not wait to do some target shooting with the old man! Also thanks for the spot on review.
I have this rifle in .300 Winchester Magnum. Hand loading Nosler 168 gr. long range accubond bullets to an average of 3,350 fps/4200 fpe. My average group size at 100 yards is right at .6 in. It wears a Leupold 4-14 CDS scope, I use this rifle for hunting the snake, salmon and clearwater breaks for large muleys and white tails. It's nice to have along when hunting big black bears as well. The .300 Win. Mag. came with a muzzle break that cuts recoil down to 243/308 levels depending on whether you're shooting high performance hand loads or factory loads, and a thread protector cap if the break is not being used. This rifle shoots well and is my "go to" rifle. One of the main features that I appreciate is the controlled round feeding! No chance of failures in that. Why Ruger doesn't offer this rifle in a wider range of good hunting calibers is my question! I'm seriously considering getting another in 7mm Remington Magnum!
I can’t find one anywhere 🤦🏼♂️. Not online either. I’m in Kentucky USA which is arguably the gun capitol of the world and can’t find a damn thing. Not just this gun but ALL of them are sold out! I knew AR15 and AK47 rifles would be hard to find due to politics but I had no clue common hunting rifles would be impossible to find. Scary stuff when ya think about it. Americans are so sure that a civil war is coming that they have bought up ALL the long guns
Beauty. Can't go wrong with Ruger. This very rifle in 7mm Rem Mag is a contender for my next rifle. It is in the running with Savage High Country. Thanks for the candid content.
Has everything I'm looking for like the sturdy stock, except for calibur, looking for PRC and better trigger so Im wondering if trigger is replaceable. Don't know about barrel lengths but 24 inch barrel sounds like a safe road to take.
I have this rifle in 6.5 prc 22” barrel. I will probably swap a longer barrel later but The velocity is 2’980 with 143 eld-x . So it’s doing good enough for me right now. Shoots 1” group’s at 300 yards .
You did not mention the major issues with this: clear casting marks EVEN ON THE TOP OF THE BOLT HANDLE, poor machining throughout receiver and bolt. The craftsmanship of this rifles action/bolt is non-existent! The barrel is nice, stock fit to receiver is shocking. Looks good in your video due to camera quality/lighting/poor finish mistaken for water droplets. For those who want to know what I am referring to, and want an example in the video, pause on 0:53 have a good look at the bolt handle ring where it secures to the bolt, that is not a camera effect that is the finish on these rifles. Also pause on 3:24 and give it a good look. A cast receiver I can live with, its the bolt finish (if i can call it that) that is just pathetic. Basically pitting marks from the cast. If you want real serious pitting have a look the top end of the Trigger guard. and pay attention to the inside of the receiver. This is simply a half finished rifle. The bolt should be billet forged, regardless of your position on cast/forged - a cast extractor claw? seriously? how much could be saved by using proper spring steel extractor! Why cut costs in areas so critical! Priced like a mid range rifle, QC is bottom end. Compared to a CZ550, the ruger is pretty much garbage. No, not being biased: 1. extractor claw half the thickness, made from CAST, a part that needs to be spring steel! (this is why rugers break so many of them, do a google search 2. The weight of the bolt ruger 300win (370g) CZ550 (450g) 3. Bolt handle clear casting marks along side it v CZ550 machined perfectly 4. Receiver cast rough as a cast iron pan - CZ550 machined to mirror from FORGED steel 5. fit of stock allows 3mm gap near rear of receiver and uneven bedding 6. Stock timber, "hardwood" - no walnut? Sorry but with a USA retail of $1300+ and Australia retail of almost $1800, this rifle is embarrassing at this price point! I own both. just bought a ruger following this video, had no idea only the barrel is forged, the rest, each and every minor part down to the safety lever, is cast, and POORLY finished at that!
Because, as stated, nooone mentioned this to me. I didnt get the opportunity to see ot before i bought it as it was in a shop over 5hrs drive from me so had to have it purchased and sent to a store near me (due to state laws) to see it. But then its too late.
Ruger is well known as using investment casting in their guns. Sorry you are not happy with your gun but I think it has a unique construction and an interesting and beautiful gun.
