For those of you who struggle with getting the bolt back into the receiver, the firing pin needs to be pulled back as the bolt is being guided into the receiver. At about the :20 point you can see he uses his finger to: 1. pull the firing pin back and 2. while holding the firing pin back, guide the bolt into the receiver. It is an important detail that unfortunately does not get commented on. Peace.

Thanks for the info. You have the right stuff for us Ruger Mini 14 owners. Straight and to the point. I love my Ranch rifle. It's been my constant companion for several years now and It has never let me down. Untill I saw this vid, I always had to struggle to get the job done right.

i just felt like the biggest loser wrestling with the bolt trying to get it back in after cleaning the rifle and just read a few comments regarding the firing pin "trick" to get it back in. worked like a charm.

Easy firearm to disassemble and reassemble. I tackled it first, actually got it right the first time--(Someone had already explained the trigger guard prying stuff)Then I watched these videos, so you know it can’t be that difficult. The Mini 14 is a very well designed firearm, and it seems takedown was a major goal in the program. I’ve always been an AR-15 fan, but these Mini 14’s are definitely top notch.

It was for me too. Now I always stand the rifle up (barrel towards the sky) when I put the bolt in. It makes it much easier for me.

Bolt insertion is like a Hayes manual. Step 1: open the hood. Step 2: remove engine and disassemble. Step 3: reassemble in reverse order of disassembly.

bolt trick: The firing pin must be resting as far back into the bolt as possible so it can clear the inside of the reciever, take a look inside when dissasembled from the bottom and you can see the contour where the bolt fits in. Also make sure your bolt lock plunger is out when you slide the bolt back in.

@alfarkle one of the things he neglects to mention in the video is that when reinserting the bolt, you need to make sure that the firing pin is in the out position. (i.e. pulled away from the front of the bolt) I literally just figured that out after about 2 hours of trying to get that bolt in.

Very easy rifle to disassemble, clean, and reassemble. Much easier than an AR15. Since the Mini-14 was designed off the M1 Garand it is a great firearm. Durable, reliable, easy to maintain. All gun makers should take this philosophy when designing a gun.

Owners manual doesn't include removing bolt lock plunger - if you don't, reinsertion of bolt is more difficult than in vid but can be done if: After you have "Inserted the tail of the firing pin through the slot in the receiver bridge, and are 'wiggling' the bolt until its rear end moves back into the receiver." You must push back on the firing pin so the it is at it's rearmost position and 'wiggle" the bolt in a backward direction while holding the firing pin rearward with a screwdriver

I know a guy who put over $2000 in modifications in his Mini-14 to try to make it accurate - to no avail. This guy is a match shooter & very experienced & knowledgable about firearms. Mind you, I had a mini-14 & loved shooting it! They're called the "Freedom Fighters'" rifle by some. If I am going to choose just one long-range weapon, it wouldn't be the mini-14. An AR15 is more accurate. There're plenty of others that are affordable & more accurate, as much as I loved to shoot the mini-14.
@jasonkunze678
@jasonkunze678 5 лет назад
Sandra Essary they fixed the accuracy in 2005 any mini 14 that has a serial number that starts with 580 and above (i.e 581) is just as capable as an ar. I have one and it shoots great 👍🏻

People who bash the Mini 14 are gun snobs. It's an excellent and reliable rifle. It's not made to be a prairie dog eliminator at 400 yards. These same people would put a Ford F-150 down because it doesn't fly......go figure.

OK! Whew! If I smoked, I'd sure need one about now! Just finished with the awesome help of the vid. Thanks Much for that!!! My BIG question is; HOW MANY ROUNDS FIRED BETWEEN EACH CLEANING (ON AVERAGE, OF COURSE)? Seems to me that after approx. 350-500 rounds, my Mini got considerably dirty, especially around the gas piston and gas housing! Last thought; anyone ever have it priced out as to how much a gunsmith would charge for cleaning a Mini? I feel like I SAVED some ammo money, at least!

@ntrudr800 to late, even though i started raging at it on you tube i kept it for about 2 weeks , but then traded it with a little extra cash for a sgl 21 61. And now I am extremely happy I loveeeee that ak and its extremely easy to take apart and put back together and it looks beautiful i have the timber smith red furniture on it and i really couldn't be happier. So if you are looking for a new mini 14 buy an ak

Everyone here keeps using this video as an excuse to bash the Mini and advertise the AR. That doesn't make much sense to me, considering that this video is showing a perfect example of how much simpler the Mini is when it comes to assembly. Should I also mention that it won't FTE constantly? Or that it's cheaper? (There are those that say it isn't, but they're looking at MSRP. I have never seen one of these for MSRP anywhere except online.) I don't think the Mini is appreciated for what it is.

Couldn't agree more. I have had mine for 44 years and it shoots great every time. I have never had the gun fail. Can't ask for much more than that.

Mini 14s are usually about $500 used, where I live, and that's with magazines, etc. $500 doesn't buy much of an AR15. Mini 14 is more reliable too - though I keep my AR clean so it's not a problem (but you don't have to keep your mini 14 all that clean). Anyway, if the 2nd term Obama bans the Ar15 by name, as it already is in some states, the price of used AR15s will skyrocket - but the Mini 14 is still made, still cheap. But let's hope he doesn't do it, that would suck!

The Plunger and Plunger spring went air born when trying to put in cover plate. Since I have to order these parts from Ruger anyone know if they sell just the two screws for the rear sight peep blade? I don't need the blade (MSO5210)just the the 2 screws that hold the blade and the proper too to install screws whatever that is? to do adjustments to both screws.

the buffer bushing and pin is a pain in the ass and a bad design decision on my 195 series (1998) ranch rifle. The pin just falls out. Reassembling my rifle in the field would be somewhat of a nightmare.

Well, I got mailed, but there's no response here - maybe it was deleted... I'll answer anyway. Endless arguing about ar15 accuracy is a red herring. You can buy a CZ 527 bolt action .223 that out of the box will beat AR15 accuracy with a better (set) trigger and iron sights - for $600. You don't need a semi auto for long distance shooting - it's not as good of a lockup for consistent shooting anyway. A $600 bolt action and a $600 mini 14 together trump any AR15 under $1800. Two guns > one!

DAMN! I bought a mini 30 and it was an absolute BITCH to get the trigger guard back in place! I had to put my rifle in my gun vise the use the punch in the hole on the trigger guard and pry backwards as hard as I could to make sure the tab clears the beveled edge the had to hold it there and smack with a rubber mallet to get it in place! There must be so much tension on it because it's new? I don't know but it's not as simple to do as in this video. This guy just pushed down with the palm of his hand and it snapped into place. 🥵

Not made for 400 yards prairie dogs? Well , tell them dead dogs at 4-500 yards. AND a mini-14 will shoot up to 800 yards +, although not as well as a 788 in 223. I guess its the shooter rather then the rifle.
