The proper thing to do is to fully scribe the drawing into the action after the layout is perfected with the pencil. Consider it your insurance. This way you never have to worry about accidentally wiping off the drawing while engraving the outline...And that's a great feeling. You can cut much more comfortably knowing that you CAN'T wipe it off.

Very nice work. Since you have both the workpiece and the camera static, you could use fixed focus instead of automatic on your camera and avoid the work going blurry in the video.

Amazing work, Karri! What is it like to work on an irreplicable item (Rare gun, sentimental value, family heirloom, etc.) with ZERO room for error? It looks like there are so many opportunities to make an unrecoverable mistake... And what do you do if that happens?

Planning is everything. The design has to be laid out so there are no errors there. In actually cutting the design, the key is sensitivity. I can feel the steel as it's being cut and I can stop as soon as I feel something amiss, like the graver getting chipped. Don't cut with a dull graver!! With quick reflexes, unrecoverable mistakes don't happen.

Beautiful work! The video is good. I'm always worried about running into heat-treated steel. What guns have been your favorite to work on in terms of ease of engraving/having a flat canvas to work with, etc?

Thank you! I don't anneal the metal. I've heard other engravers do that to make cutting easier but I won't mess with the manufacturers' standards. Not a good idea for fire arms. This means I won't engrave glocks or XDs or other hardened metals. I just don't have an engraver strong enough to get into them. Favorite guns? Love Golden boys, 1886 rifle (for the canvas space 😍). Pistols? I like stainless steel so Vaqueros or colts (SA or 1911) are great.

I totally agree with not interfering with the manufacturer's specs. However, could you use tungsten or tungsten carbide gravers? Brittle but hard. Slowly, slowly does the trick. Well done anyway!@@theartistengraver

When you receive a customers shotgun do you pick it up from the FFL where it was shipped? Your work area looks clean and calm.

have you tried fixatif prior to using the watercolor paint and then going over with it again with fixatif? I feel like it may help keep you from accidentally smudging the paint

I just started using white acrylic paint as a base to draw onto. It leaves a texture which makes it kind of rough. Does the watercolor produce a smooth base?

I don't have the specification on the size. I buy "blank" gravers and shape the point myself. I have two shapes that are my favorites and the shaping jigs are made by Steve Lindsay.

Hi, I don’t think this is much of a beginners video. You spend the 3/4 of the video talking about a fight with your client and the proceed to give a half hearted explanation of your process. If a person is looking into begging hand engraving do you think this what they want?

I don't see too many other engravers demonstrating on RU-vid, so I think this, and my other videos are informative for beginners as a collection. As far as instruction value, I didn't get your tuition check, so I don't think I need to create a course for you.

If you want to learn engraving get a good design first and don’t over stretch yourself it takes years of effort and practice to create a piece that is desirable look at the best . Don’t think you can sell your gun later with inferior work their are people who know what good engraving is . The demo is a fine example for a hobbyist but not for anyone who wants it as a profession .
