Say Hail to the King Baby!
The King of Snubs? Really? When considering five shot 38/357 snubs it fits. There are others of better quality, nicer design and better finish. There are others I like better. But the SP101 is bigger and heavier than most, it’s rugged, and it is of high quality. It does a lot and then some. You can’t go wrong with an SP101.

60-70% of the time I carry a five shot snub. I've three I generally rotate for that, a S&W 640, a Taurus 605 and the Ruger. They all have their place, but if I had to choose one, it would be the Taurus. If I had to whittle my handgun collection down to three, it would be my S&W Model 64, the Taurus 605 and my Glock 19 gen 3. They all shoot well and come alive in my hand.@@rickylesende

Greg, I like it when a gun guy will actually discusses being "concealed" what I call as being our daily clothes. Ken Hackathorn is a real stickler for addressing concealed carry while actually concealing the firearm for practice. I see many "Experts" who are teaching self defense shooting while wearing combat or competition appearing gear. Your choice with this revolver is great. They run, and will stop many two or four legged critters! Best to ya',,,,as always!

I have had one of these for about 15 years, in .357 Magnum with the 2.25 inch barrel and the spurless hammer. It is reliable, accurate, and easy to conceal. It has the advantage of being able to handle a very wide range of power in the ammunition without malfunctions, a much greater range than any semi-auto.

Greg, I owned an SP101 .38, as well a. 357. They were always dependable. I generally either pocket carried (in a DeSantis Nemesis), or OWB with a 1791 leather holster at 3 o'clock. I later switched out to an S&W Model 60, and eventually settled on a Model 640 .357. I recently traded an original Shield 9mm (gifted to me last year), and paid 200 more to get a new Shield Plus. Two 13 round mags, 3 free mags coming from S&W, and it even holds 15 round mags. Great trigger too. It's the companion piece (in a Vedder Pocket Locker) to my 640 at 3 o'clock. This combio covers all the bases. One last thing, I'm going to let it slide that you weren't in your Grambo fatigues. 😂

The 3" is the perfect middling size - and even better with a Hogue grip installed (makes it look even sexier too)... Great balance with increased velocity with the 3" barrel (especially over a snub J-frame or LCR), and it still conceals very well. The aftermarket Hogue grip is definitely a must-try. A very fine revolver.

Reminds me a bit of the old Ruger Speed Six stainless 357 I carried when a peace officer off duty. If I recall, it had a 2 3/4" barrel. I bobbed the hammer spur, and rebuilt the action for smooth DA work. Gave it to an officer I'd worked with for years, who became a chief of a 10 man department. It became his office duty weapon. Might just check out the 101... Could be something that I can use.

I have become used to the weight to where I do not notice it anymore I guess because the first 18 years I carried all I had was the 2.25 inch. Now I have a couple small polymer pistols I use for some things on occassion and even a couple LCR(x) 1.875 inch and the LCRx 3 inch but vast majority of times I have the sp 3 inch on me as it is so versatile with ammo choices I can carry whatever .38/.357 ammo in it I think I may need. I love my SP-101 and it is one of my son's favorite guns as well. I've shot .357's out of mine, so while it is doable, I still wouldn't call it pleasant. I save my .357 Magnums for my GP-100, which are much more enjoyable to shoot super hot loads out of. I would very much like to get an SP-101 in .327 Fed Mag in addition to the .357 I have now. My only ever so minor gripe about it is the weight and sharp machined edges. I ended up going with a Smith and Wesson. 357 snub and got some walnut grips with a T-grip addition. I had a guy bring me his 101 and asked to take off burs and sharp areas in the frame. But over all it is a damn fine firearm for anyone that really loves to pack a .357.
@LionquestFitness
@LionquestFitness Год назад
I was going to discuss the sharp edges, but some claim this a myth. However, my GP100 is nowhere as sharp as the SP101. I wondering if this could be a quality control issue.
@Really-Know
@Really-Know Год назад
@LionquestFitness It is a quality control issue. It's not on all 101s, but if you find one at a gun show, 7/10 times it has sharp edges. And some aren't nearly as bad as others. My dad's not bad. But the guy's I worked on would flay you.

Thanks, Greg, for another great video... excellent point on practicing in non range clothing 👍 Very true that the SP-101 is a great gun, but personally if I'm going to carry something heavy enough to require a holster, I'll pick something with more than 5 shots...such as a Glock Mod 19 or a Springfield 1911.. The only advantage I see to carrying a small 5 shot revolver..such as a Ruger LCR or S&W 642...is that they are light enough to comfortably carry in a pocket... people tend to obsess over size when picking a CCW handgun, but weight is just as much of a factor.... trying to pocket carry a heavy pistol is a miserable experience...

I am thinking of selling it and trying to find a better version. Madness, I know. Money down the drain. But it is a great size for concealed carry, and to my surprise I can handle 357 in it just fine now (I've been working on recoil control a lot on other guns and it apparently has paid off). Even shooting rapidly from 19 yards I can keep them all in the middle of a 12x18" target. There's a Wiley Clapp model with Novak sights that I have been drooling over... hopefully being a special edition it would receive more quality control attention...

In this day and age where light weight is what everyone really wants for comfort and convenience- no one really considers how brutal .357 can be from small packages, or how rough a .38 Special +p can be from an airweight. Not to mention how hotter loads can also beat the gun it’s self. Lot of people would be better served with one even if not running magnum loads.

Thank you very much for this video. Determining which revolver is the best for oneself depends on very personal criteria. The SP-101 is especially relevant as a complement to a GP-100. It is very strong and was one of the first five shot revolvers chambered for the .357 magnum. It has been officially used by police departments (at least in France). On the other hand, it is too heavy and bulky to be carried in a pocket. Personally, although I like a 3" SP-101, I prefer a k-frame revolver with the same barrel length.

Salut Greg, I noticed (for the first time) that you were not always using your normal support hand grip with your forefinger holding the front of the revolver trigger guard … pourquoi? It is also my style of grip to assist greatly in muzzle flip from recoil, and so faster target re-alignment. You are the only other shooter that I have seen using that style so it is something I always look for. I know that Glocks and Berettas semis still have a concave front to the trigger guard which “proposes” such a style, and yet seems never to be used by shooters. And I think a lot of shooters would be wary of that style of grip in a revolver due to the gas leak from the front of the cylinder, however as we both know that will not occur in the direction of the forefinger. As further evidence that this style is perfectly safe consider the trigger guard shape on both the Manurhin model MR 93 and MR 96 revolvers with their concave shaped trigger guards, and Manurhin do know a thing or two about .357 revolvers. Cordialement RB.

@LionquestFitness Год назад
I had to change my grip when I started shooting the Henry revolver because of its large frame. I liked the new grip for revolvers and it worked better for the modified weaver I've gone back to. On the other hand I'm still shooting my old way - thumbs forward and forefinger on the guard with my polymer pistols. Thank you for noticing that and giving your experience and input.

Agree that while most definitely not on the svelte side, especially compared to the LCR, they are utterly reliable. They just don't break! My 101, in all honesty is not a snubbie, and not even in .38/.357, but instead a 1990s 4" .32 H&R magnum. Heavier still! But is that action ever slick! Sadly, I can't say I care much for the new ones with the MIM parts.

I've always wanted a 101, but other purchases came first. It's a beautiful weapon, especially with the right grips on it. I think the trigger is heavier than it needs to be, at least on the examples I have handled. I have seen Texas prison guards carrying the 3 inch version of the 101 when accompanying prisoners to the hospital. If I had one, I'd carry it in a rotation with my other revolvers.

I noticed in one of your past videos you said that your SP101 shoots low. I bought a used one and took it to the range today. I found that mine shoots low too. I’ve looked all over the internet and have found that this is a common problem. I guess I will file my front sight down little by little until it hits where I aim. My 605 puts just about everything I load into it in the bullseye if I do my part. Crazy that a gun half the price outshoots my SP101. How low does yours shoot?
@LionquestFitness
@LionquestFitness Год назад
What I do is raise the barrel slightly. I've painted the sights orange and once you find the aimpoint, it actually makes it easier to get on target for point and shoo because you are concentrating on the front sight. I've Smith and Taurus revolvers I have to do this with as well.
