Very historic place; I've hiked there many times. Those berries were wild raspberries. Most of them are wineberries, which is actually an invasive species from Asia. Very tasty, though.

Question: Do you know anything about Broad Bay Manor in Virginia Beach? A Wikipedia site lists it as "....purportedly the oldest extant European-built house in the Southeastern U.S...." The issue seems to be that it's a private residence still, but I can't find any literature on it. Take care.

Another place you could try in that same area is Gunston Hall (George Mason’s home). It’s also on the river, about halfway between Mount Vernon and Leesylvania Park.
