There are rules in mixing and music production, but are these rules holding you back from getting a better mix or producing better music? In this video, we’ll examine some of these rules of mixing, taught by audio schools for engineering, and show which rules of mixing you can break, or bend, and which ones you just can’t touch. And we’ll explain why these mixing rules are there in the first place, so you know when and under what conditions you can break the rules of mixing music.
We explain tape saturation using a tape simulator plugin, the Universal Audio Ampex ATR-102, and how it can be used to get some sweet tape compression, tape saturation and harmonic distortion to your music tracks and your mix.
We also demonstrate why it’s sometimes okay to overload an analog mic preamp plugin, using the Waves Scheps 73 as an example, and how you can get a nice distortion from it.

I hope you can learn a few things here about thinking a little differently about mixing, as we all have our own unique approach" -Arty Skye
