There are plenty of rumors that circulate about famous rock stars that you just know are fiction when you hear them. Maybe there was a kernel of truth there at one point, but the rumor often snowballs into something ridiculously over-the-top.
Then again, there are the rumors about musicians that are so bizarrely specific that they have to be true, no matter how ridiculous they sound. After all, why would someone make up the story that David Lee Roth had a ban on brown M&Ms at Van Halen shows? It’s time to take a look at some rumors you’ve heard about musicians that were totally true.

The brown M&M thing was also intended as financial insurance. Van Halen, like many bands, were regularly being ripped off by promoters, their record company, management, ect. At the end of a tour they found out they weren't paid for some shows because extra expenses took all the money. They were being billed for stuff roadies, or even fans broke. Since they recorded every incident where their candy request wasn't met, they could tell the people sending them the bill to fuck off. If they didn't get the money they were owed, they'd take the people to court, and had a contract to back their claim.

I think you both got it wrong . Warner Bros seemed to "loan" them money for what they needed : professional studio time and expenses and money for tour . Money for the tour to rent or buy concert stages and audio equipment .

I've heard that the real reason that they did this, was to get the people at whatever venue they were at to pay attention to all the details of the show. Like if they freak out because you know there's two brown m&Ms in their bowl what are they going to do with the sounds not right?

For years there was this rumor going around about Frank Zappa holding a "gross out contest" at one of his shows. The story goes that a woman came up onstage from the audience and pulled out her bloody tampon. Zappa, not to be outdone, put it in his mouth. Then some guy takes a shit on stage, and Zappa supposedly eats it to win the contest. All of this was just made up, of course, but once when a reporter asked Zappa about it, he had the perfect response: "The closest I've ever coming to eating shit was at a Holiday Inn buffet in Fayetteville, North Carolina."

The brown m&m story was absolutely true. During the 1984 tour, my friends and I were all 18. We went to see Van Halen in Greensboro, NC. We got there early and were messing around near the back stage entrance and one of the roadies came off one of the tour buses and gave use a large paper bag full of brown M&Ms. He told use the boys in Van Halen told him to give us the M&Ms.

The Van Halen writer was serious business as the KISS song "Shock Me" was about a real incident when Ace Frehley was badly electrocuted on stage in 1976. He was seized by an ungrounded current and unable to move, but finally broke free and fell several feet to the stage floor.

My ex brother-in-law was a private pilot for Elton John a couple of times “back in tha day”, and in his contract he was told Elton John required bowls of specific candies in different places on the plane (I think he said one of them was Skittles). When he got on the plane he immediately changed into super fuzzy purple underwear (think Troll Doll hair), and tiptoed from bowl to bowl like Elmer Fudd trying to sneak up on Bugs Bunny. He would eat some candy out of one bowl then Elmer Fudd over to the next bowl, then the next bowl and so on. I guess when you are that rich you can afford to be as eccentric as you want to be. 😉

That was never a rumour about KISS having their blood used in the ink. It was an established fact! In the middle of the comic book were a couple of pages telling the story of KISS giving their blood for the ink, with pictures of them doing so.

I just realized that the M&M thing with Van Halen is actually referenced as a joke in Wayne's World 2, when the roadie Del Preston tells a story about Ozzy not going on stage until he had a brandy glas filled with 1000 brown M&M's. Over 25 years when I first saw that movie and now I finally got the joke. 🤣

Kiss putting blood in the comic book was never a rumor nor unknown by fans. They filmed them doing it and it was a big deal that they had done it. It wasn’t like the way you’re making it out to be. It was either News cameras, MTV or VH1, one of those, but definitely a big deal and they never had to “confirm” this later, that’s another reason they sold so quick

Big Country were supporting the Stones at a massive outdoor gig. When they came offstage Keith Richards asked the late Stuart Adamson what it was like out there. Stuart Adamson replied that it was fantastic and the atmosphere was amazing. Keith Richards replied that that wasn't what he meant. He meant was it cold onstage in case he needed to wear a jumper. Don't know if its a crazy story but it's totally true.

Working in the concert industry Dion Warwick had one of the craziest riders. She wanted a couple of bottles of a particular champagne in her room. I can't remember the name but it wasn't anything special. A Ms. Pac-Man had to be in her room. Monday, Wednesday and Friday the green room had to have bowls of gum drops. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday was M&M's. Sunday had something else I can't remember.

Mister Tago Mago I don’t think it’ll ever be but with so many people talking about it I’m pretty sure it’s true. The details of it (was it even a shark, was it dead or alive, etc) are spotty, but Richard Cole’s made up a lot of shit about Zeppelin over the years so who knows. Page and JPJ pretty much have dismissed all of his claims. I’m pretty sure he’s fried from all of the drugs haha.

Ok,serious here. Back in 1960 I was bitten by a dog,just a small bite from a stray dog. Couldn't find the dog, no way to just test me and see if I had rabies. I had to get a series of painful injections (anti-rabies),in the abdomen for some reason. So, running Ozzy for a blood test for rabies right after he bit the head off of a bat,not realistic.

Many concert riders don’t get read. Hiding the Brown M&M in the middle of the rider shows if they actually read it or not. That was my job, to double check if the odd little things in the rider had been met by the venue. Oh the fun in that!

The Kiss blood thing wasn't a "rumor" - I remember when they had the comic printed and there were pictures in the press of them pouring their respective pints of blood into the red ink at the printing factory. It was a big deal and nothing secret or rumored about it.

Howard Stern got Jagger’s ex to first reveal that on TV. Stern was on _The Joan Rivers Show_ right after her and complained about how boring her stories were (she had just been released from a decades-long non-disclosure contract). So she came back out and told that story.

Singing "Over The Mount" not even getting the end of "Mountain" out. He was rushed to Burnham Hospital and after being given rabies shots he was released.

In his book Rod states he was with Ron Wood and they were out in the sun somewhere. From a certain angle he could see a small hole in Ronnie's nose. It was at that point they decided to shove it up their butt because they didn't want that to happen and it was to preserve Rod's voice.

That Kiss blood being in the comic book is totally true. There's a pic somewhere from a mag back at that time that shows all of them standing beside the ink vat, each with a vile of their blood. I'm sure the photo was just for the mag, but the article explained what happened pretty well.

Funny story about Sting: when he was shooting Dune, Patrick Stewart didn't know him and was not impressed when he arrived on set, and later he had a brief chat with him.
