Just saw Run Lola Run for the first time. It was pretty good. I enjoyed it quite a lot. I picked up on pretty much all the themes, and appreciated things like the side characters alternate futures. But for some reason, it doesn't feel like a repeat view for me. Maybe its one of those movies that once i know how it ends, i lose the desire to watch again. Maybe because it's the same run with different outcomes. Not sure.
I saw this movie a long time ago in 1999 I think. I liked it a lot. I should probably rewatch it sometime. I'm so glad you referenced videogames here because it definately has that keep trying until you get it right thing. Also I think it influenced the Mirror's Edge videogames as well.
And she has reviewed Run Lola Run... You put me on my knees! I discovered this movie just a month before you unfortunately. It was hard to find reviews of it. I was young and stupid at that time : I didn't understand I had watched the movie a month too early... 100% agree with you again. Only I would have emphasised on the energy the movie provides, the perfectly fitting techno music and on how great Lola is. My roommate came back home during the end credits and I was in such an état de jubilation that I immediately downloaded the spanish subtitles to watch it again with him^^ I couldn't stop watching Lola run and scream! Alright now the final test, tommorow I am checking out your Florida Project and Roma reviews. Two movies I can't get out of my head lately along with Climax. I don't have anything bad to say about Roma and only one minor defect in FP. So if you pointed out more issues you better have used a pretty good argumentation!
I think the movie works as an exploration of multiverses, where she goes through several universes and the idea of showing the still shots that speed through a whole history is very multiverse. The comparison to a video game works pretty good too.
An early film with this theme is "Repeat Performance" (1947), a black-and-white Hollywood film noir with Joan Leslie wishing on New Year's Eve that she would live the past year over, and getting her wish. Existing DVDs for this film look lousy. Amazon Prime used to stream this, but no longer. "Run Lola Run" is, of course, one of the more stylish films of this kind. I saw it when it came out and it was quite impactful then. Besides the time-loop theme, the film also uses animation, songs, and other stylistic touches.

I think the opening quotes are just trying to get you to take it a little more seriously. In some movies it adds a lot. The opening/closing quotes in Infernal Affairs really help make the ending a million times better than The Departed. Instead of killing the Matt Damon character, he lives, but the end is much darker, because in Infernal Affairs he's not such an evil character. He just chose a different path and ended up doing horrible things... According to Buddha, "He who is in Continuous Hell never dies. Longevity is a great hardship in Continuous Hell."

great review. my fav foreign film of all time. U can tell wachowskis were influenced by it, later went on to collaborate with the director multiple times. the movie is just a shotgun to the face of pure fun and adrenaline
In the same boat …. I haven't gotten around to "Run Lola Run". Even though the way you've described it is a draw to finally see it, my existing collection already has a stack of titles demanding a first viewing from me (starting with "Boyz N the Hood"). So getting around to "Run Lola Run" will still take a long time. Even products of the German film industry are in a queue, more out of having to pace the consumption: every German work I've encountered so far is bonkers (with the exception of "Das Boot", which is too long and deliberate to bother with insanity).
Interesting review. It is strange that it was released the same year as Sliding Doors (both films having a similar premise). I like films that play with the form, like Pulp Fiction. The multiverse/alternate timeline has been used in several movies/books/sitcoms eg: Frasier, Dangerous Corner by JB Priestly, Blind Chance (Polish movie from 80s) etc. Still makes you think: what if I had taken that route. I really enjoyed this film and love how they use time in this film because I watch a lot of movies and I don’t really see movies like this one using time like that except like Christopher Nolan of course because he uses time all the time in his films.
I see your points of criticism concerning films that open with quotes. One instance that runs against the grain is The Passion of The Christ. Its opening statement: He was wounded for our transgressions, crushed for our iniquities; by His wounds we are healed. - Isaiah 53 700 BC serves to reflect back on the events we're about to witness in the film even though written 7 centuries before they took place. @@13Tiradentes The verses you quoted were written during the Babylonian captivity. The nation of Israel was dispossessed, the people taken away to a foreign land, and Jerusalem was destroyed. The prophet is mourning the destruction of the land and the exile of its people. Isaiah is using a metaphor of a man to symbolize a whole nation, also predicting/hoping for a revival once the allotted time of punishment has ended. Are you saying the Jews don't know their own scriptures??Christ was later imagined as fulfilling the role of the "servant of God", (btw. while also being God, how does that work?), but that is ahistorical reading of the passage.

@@keatsgoodwin43334 You'd think that if you hadn't seen the movie I'm talking about. No one has, apparently. It takes place in the Hollywood hills and involves some angsty teenager who ends up as a zombie in an apocalypse of some kind, and Jeff Goldblum has a bit part involving some MDMA at a funeral or something. It's not even in his IMDB credits. I have been looking for this movie to make sure I wasn't hallucinating for years.
Just because it's an experiment doesn't mean it's not a film. you seem to have fairly rigid ideas in your assessment of films. You keep saying "I tend to..." . So a lot of your review is really about YOU, and how you want to come across. Some of your comments make sense, in terms of describing the structure of the film. For someone so young, you seems to have developed the pomposity beyond your years.
