This reminds me of a man named Phineas Gage, I had to read a book about him. He was a foreman at a railroad construction site and while working, absentmindedly hammered his 43-inch tamping rod (basically a tool to press something down, think of it as a mortar and pestle) into a hole with blasting powder, the following explosion blew the rod straight through his head. Miraculously, he was still alive, and the only changes after surviving this were that he lost an eye and he was "mentally greatly changed." Many years later when modern scientists try to understand just how it was possible that he survived this, they used a 3d brain to test out thousands if not more of possible positions with only the most minute of differences in position.
