I remember using that calculator in grade 10 math near the turn of the Millenium. It blew my mind when my friend borrowed it one night to install all these games on it, it was like having a Gameboy that you were "allowed to use in class". I did not do well in Math that year

When I was in high school, I had a TI-82 and being the massive nerd I am, I learned how to use TI Basic and wrote programs and a few games on my calculator. My best story was I was a TA for a math teacher I had a few years before and I showed her the tic-tac-toe game I made and her reaction was to give me her graphic calculator and told me to put it on hers.

“I have a PS4.” “I have the XBOX” “I have a Nintendo Switch” “I have a Goddamn calculator.”

We were cleaning out a math office and the teacher rewarded us with ti 83s. I saw her throw away a box full of link cables and it turns out they cost $12 on eBay! RIP.

This games and so many other calculator games were a big part of my childhood. I still have my TI-83 Plus SE from High School that has tons of Flash and TI-BASIC games on it. Unfortunately the link port doesn't seem to be working anymore so I can't transfer the games off it to other calculators, but fortunately it's easy to still find these games like you have outlined in your videos.

Such a great idea for a video. Question for anyone reading, on my TI-83 I had some RPG-like game where you sold drugs, the goal being to survive without a deal going bad and make as much money as possible. Does anyone remember the name of this game?

Doom actually looks really good here, at least for the year 1996. This was a time, when cell phones had no games.

There's also a Mega Man game called Megaman83. I don't know how available it is anymore but it's a complete Mega Man game, with robot masters and even a final "Wily" level. I played a lot of it back in high school.

I used to transfer programs to my TI-83 Plus in college to help in finite mathematics. But I never knew I could've transferred over DOOM!

For linux users, TI Connect doesn't work (I didn't manage to make it work using wine), but there's an alternative called TiLP (TiLP is a Linking Program). It's just as simple as TI Connect, and it was pretty simple to set up with a small knowledge of bash.

I've been developing Tetris on my TI-83 for a year or so now... It's a challenge to do it using TI-BASIC and still have it run at a reasonable speed.

I remember when i was a freshman in high school in 2014 one of my classmates had this calculator and gamed on it during class. His older brother had the calculator for a long time and put the games on it. Most of us had the newer ti 84 and paid the 100 bucks for it new and were so confused by it. 😂

I got to play Calculator DOOM once at a rally at high school. Some kid had their calculator in the back messing around on it lmao. Was amazing.

It’s nice that ti is able to let people play video games on calculators. Now we’ll just have to wait and see if tech companies are able to do this with paper shredders😁.

I've used my TI84 to cheat on the exam by putting an Excel sheet on it that would solve complex, multi-step problems. Fun times.

Fun fact: these calculators do make noise! If you have a radio, you can tune it to a station without a signal. Then if you put the calculator near the radio, it will make VERY calculating noises as it runs programs. IIRC, there are some programs written in Assembly that take advantage of this odd quirk to actually play sound effects and music.

My math teacher caught me and asked if he could have a turn I didn’t think this shitty joke would get so much traction.

You can overclock the TI-83 up to 15MHz. Doom should run better then (though the graphics will still be laggy due to the screen).
