Running My First Ultra Marathon - 75KM St Cuthberts Way

Can I Ultra Run

Ultra running, Its a lot harder than I anticipated! I ran my first Ultra Marathon on July 10th 202. This was a 45 Mile - 75KM Race across the Scottish boarders and Northumberland hills, nearly double the distance you would run on a normal Marathon. Having never ran an Ultra Marathon before it was quite the experience! Something which I never thought I could be capable of. It was the most surreal experience and most definitely something which has changed my life completely. And for the record, Ultra Marathons are hard.
I documented the training, events leading up to the race and the race itself. All which can be seen here!
Running an Ultra Marathon is something totally new to me and I learned an awful lot about myself along the way, it opened my eyes into just how difficult the sport of Ultra running is. Having ran Marathons in the past I was unsure how much more difficult it could be to bridge the gap between 42.2KM and 75KM. Turns out it was pretty difficult!!
I pretty much self filmed the whole video using a Go Pro Hero 8 which I found to work absolutely amazingly. I cannot fault the Go-Pro Hero 8 at all. I edited the video using iMovie... Something which worked fine, but not I am sure there will be better software out there, it did the job fine though.
Sean Conway was the chap who gave me the unbelivable advice, people have actually commented on how good it was after watching the video, check out his socials @Seanconwayadventure - Really cool guy!
Charity:
www.justgiving.com/fundraisin...
given how difficult I found this ultra marathon I figured it would be worth while trying to raise money for charity! It is already over £900 which has surpassed all expectations!
The Race:
Bridging the national borders between Scotland and England. The race starts at the historic town of Melrose in the Scottish Borders and finishes at Wooler in Northumberland. The route follows a way marked path heading Eastwards crossing large sections of the beautiful Scottish Borders region and the Northumberland National Park. The race finishes at at the lovely market place town of Wooler.
The race qualifies for 3 UTMB points - Pretty cool!!!

Love this journey. I have watched a lot of slick ultra videos for inspiration but this video moves me the most. Not saying you're not slick but that you're coming in as a newbie and it's so relatable. Thank you!

That was the best running video that I have seen for a very long time - since FullTiltWard's seven hour epic. I came 5th in the SCW45 in 2018 and then DNF'd at Jedward (as I call it) the following year (when it was still Wooler to Melrose). So I definitely felt your pain and I have massive respect for your pushing on despite being in a lot of discomfort from relatively early on. Great effort and exceptional presentation style. Well done!

Hey Ian, just seen the comment, thanks so much for taking the time to write something! I do wiki see how the race would have panned out going wooler > Melrose, as you’d suffer the 3 big peaks first rather than towards the end, perhaps a challenge for another day lol! I’d love to do some running around Scotland, is there any races you’d recommend?

@@caniultrarun859 Hey man cheers for the reply. Yes, I am doing the Tarawera 102km here in NZ on 12 February, 2022. Have done the 52km twice now so time to step it up. It is an amazing event with 21km, 52km, 102km and 100 Mile options. It is also a UTMB qualifier. Worth a look on RU-vid as some great vlogs. Your UK Tom Evans won the 102km in 2020 (he ran past us at the end and looked like he was doing interval training...such a machine) and our own legend Ruth Croft won it this year. I am a middle of the pack runner and just love the shared experience with mates. Three of us always do the events and love the experience we share in the training block beforehand and then on race day.

@Krilin84
@Krilin84 2 года назад
@@caniultrarun859 it's my pleasure - I think you fill a somewhat vacant space in the running community here on youtube, with your sort of personality and approach to running. Watching your film I didn't feel inferior and like I was watching some sort of super human, but rather someone human like me, who's tracks I could possibly follow in time, which was really nice and inspiring! I definitely know what you mean about feeling like a beginner still. I don't know that I'll ever feel like more than a beginner compared to people who's been running since their youth, when I only started in my mid 30's. That's alright though - it kind of takes the pressure off too, I try to tell myself, lol. I've been going at it for about 2 years now. I was some 30kg over weight about 5 years ago, but managed to lose that weight, and then got into running, and it's been a crooked path to say the least, both physically and mentally. Had a big dip when getting injured and sidelined with a lack of motivation for a few months during the first year of running, but I've managed to stay injury free and consistent now for about a year, knock on wood, and just finished my first marathon, solo, in 3:39, which I'm both monumentally proud of and struck with a deep existential anxiety about, that I'm never going to be able to top it, lol. We'll see where it goes and if the body and mind is willing or not. I've really fallen in love with running to be sure and have been enjoying a mix of running and cycling for the past 6 months or so (I think only running max every other day is what's keeping me injury free now), and really cherish variety just in general. Now, after the marathon training project, I've started training for a sub20min 5k (seeing if I can push my pace up by means of trying to kill myself doing interval sessions two times a week 🥵), while nursing some kind of open ended idea of doing a trail ultra like yourself at some point, by doing most of my easy running as long trail runs. Somewhat similar to the super beautiful mountain landscapes in your film, we have some epic mountain nature here in the mid and northern parts of Sweden where I'd love to explore and run more. Anyway. Apologies for pouring out my life story in the comment section like this - being an introvert who's been doing most of this stuff by myself these past two years, it's nice to share it once in a while with someone who seemingly can relate! What about you, how's training going at the moment and do you have any upcoming adventures ahead? In any case, best wishes for the future - I'd love to see more inspiring films about your struggles and great running accomplishments! 🙌

But I managed to develop plantar faciitis on one of my feet during it, and then when trying to rehab the thing by getting into barefoot running (supposed to strengthen your arch) I managed to develop bursitis in the other freakin foot by upping the barefoot volume too quickly, lol. So it's been a slow come back from that the past few months. On the plus side, being benched from running finally pushed me to dare take up swimming, learning to do proper freestyle technique, as I've been dreaming of doing a triathlon one day. It's damn tricky though, I can still barely do 50m before getting out of breath after a few weeks of training. Buuut it's slow going in general at the moment in any case, as I recently had my first child, and have now become homeless due to my new house that's being built becoming delayed, so have had to relocate to the family cottage deep out in the woods, lol. Oh well, I'm learning to look at things in much bigger time frames, and not get too upset by seeing my hard earned aerobic fitness turn into belly fat. I'll get back into it once things get back to normal - I've become too addicted to endurance training by now to ever stop doing it! What about you? How's life? Any more ultras on the horizon?

@Can I Ultra Run I’m almost 59 so I’ve done lots of races and half’s are definitely the perfect distance for maintaining a good core endurance. These ultras are awesome but they involve such a big training commitment in time and effort. Only recently did I take to the trails and so far 42-50km are my distances. Trail running doesn’t beat a guy up physically as much as road marathons but as you know trails tend to have lots of vertical challenges. I do want to try some longer distances like you did. I would think your Ironmans were much more challeging than an Ultra in this range - I didn my first ultra - a 60 km trail race - last year and whislt it was hard work, I would not compare it to an Ironman. On the other hand I have done an 47 km race in the Austrian Alps with 4,000 metres in elevation gaimed and 3000 metres in descents which took me 12 houra - the higher elevation is quite challenging for people not used to elevation. So distances in themselves can be deceptive and a longer race may be an easier race

Ah thats awesome, good going signing up? . Which 50K have you signed up for, I really wanted to do the "Ultra North" around Newcastle, but the date clashes with a wedding im best man at!

@@caniultrarun859 sounds like weddings and ultra clashes are your thing! Mines down south for the south west 50 challenge around Minehead on the coast. It’s part of the ‘action challenge’ series so may some more up north they are putting on

Yea that was a pretty raw moment, it’s funny watching it back I was so vulnerable at that point!! I totally stand by what I said though. And you know what, it DID change my life.

Oh, I get it. I've been exactly there. I relived that feeling as I saw it hit you. Congrats on the achievement and on the changes.

Exactly that mate what’s the next challenge I’m looking for Inspo?

@@caniultrarun859 Well, what distance are you looking to challenge now? I know that you have lots of phenomenal runs in your neck of the woods (perhaps with a little travel). Next on my calendar are the Rocky Raccoon 100 and the Keys 100. With any luck, I can train without injury and actually start (and finish!) both of these races.

Well this was equal parts informative and terrifying. On the 9th of July the TrailOutlaws 45 mile St Cuthberts Way race will be my first Ultra too. But can you believe they've started it at midnight this year! This is the first time I've 'seen' the route. OMG so many hills. I'm based in Chester and mainly road running for my training but this has confirmed the need for more hill training. The production of this is excellent. The tips from Sean Connway also excellent. You absolutely bossed the training too. Millage wise I'm not going to be averaging that much each month. But my basic aim is just to cross the finish line. Would you say that it was 'fully way marked' I'm stressing out about the navigation. Likely to only be able to recce one small section at the end of May. Any other top tips? THANK YOU so much for sharing the journey and this video. Super super helpful.

Hey Sarah, great job signing up it’s an awesome run I loved it. I can’t believe this one is a 12:00 start! That’s a new curve ball thrown in! It is way marked but I downloaded ViewRanger app (I had to pay) but I downloaded the route to my online an it was literally invaluable! You might actually be able to download my route off Strava if you find me and follow that to be fair? I’m not certain tho. I’m gonna put another video out soon about main things I learned on the ultra, but my main advice is: A) train with the weigh you’ll use on the day on your back, I hear the weight in your back X4 onto your knees B) get stretching now, your quads will be sore so the more prepared they are to tighten the better! C) prepare for it to suck, from half way onwards at least!

@@caniultrarun859 Massive thank you for this. I think I've found you on Strava and will defo checkout the route. ViewRanger sounds like an ideal back-up. HAHA, yeap preparing for it to suck big time. Seeing the hills in the video has defo kicked up hill rep training and I'll get on strengthening & stretching the quads. I'll also look out for your next video! Thanks again for your helpful reply.
