Running My Showman's Engine - In The Garden. Friday the 16th of July 2021 was a very fine day, a good time I think to play with my Traction Engine, so it's out of the Workshop for me to get some fresh air and spend time fighting off Horse Flies.

A true mastepiece. I hope you signed it. In Canada we have horseflies. Here's a trick from an expert: put some sticky tape sticky side out on the back of a hat. The little buggers gravitate the the back of your head and get stuck.

people who leave nasty comments are just pissed that they can't have one of these beautiful engines, they are simple and lavish at the same time. The love of steam that Keith has fills me with AWE with his dedication and love for these engines. I have watched many of your videos and will watch many more Steam Master with the same respect and awe as the first. If you haven't seen it watch the how and why video, enough said.

Nasty Comments about this engine???? A-Holes!!! Many of us can only aspire to have an engine so nice. I for one must do with a Mamod Road Roller and a Wilesco Traction Engine. I own a large house, but we are a family of 5. This would take up too much room, not to mention money.

Keith; This is one of your more fascinating models. A bit on the large size and its original purpose (the electric generator, and the just pure fun of running it, shows how much you like the thing. Take good care of it. You have done a lot of TLC to make it so nice. ;-)

Funny as an Australian I have never associated flys with England, even during my visit to my ancestral homeland didn’t see a single fly. If you ever visit Australia and in particular Lake Mungo, NSW, you will know about flys, as your back will be black with the little buggers. On another note, loved and always have the Showman’s engine. Going to start building one now.

Thanks for sharing this. I had never heard of showman's engines before. I did some reading. Fascinating history. I just don't think we had them in US. I love steam tractors (or road locomotives if you prefer). My grandparents and my father worked the fairs for years. They had a couple of old Ford trucks. Most everything else was hand made. I was reminded of them while reading about the various cranes and other equipment that operators would make for their engines. Thanks for the education.

I never will understand the attraction for trolls to making negative comments on videos do they get some kind of satisfaction out of it . If you don't like something go watch another video about something you do enjoy. all it does is show there low intelligence I tend to feel sorry for someone with nothing better to do then piss and moan about someone's hobby. I think this is a very beautiful engine and I was hoping you would take it out for the summer but at the very least you did get it out and steam it before winter.

Lake flies love steam oil, I'm sure some horse fly's do too. It's the 10% animal fat in the steam oil that they love. Lake flies get stuck to my Swift hydrostatic lubricator on my steam boat.

G’day from Oz. I’m not saying that it’s the same (as I simply don’t know) but however, this fantastic model reminds me of a well loved movie. “The Iron Maiden”, as it’s a very similar style, at least as far as memory serves. I liked that movie ever since I saw it as a kid, in fact I saw that and the Titfield Thunderbolt at about the same time, and it’s what got me interested in steam in the first place. Even though both movies had glaringly obvious logic problems. But they are both still fun and enjoyable movies regardless. Do I would like to know just how similar they are, if at all.

What a strange comment . . . . It is fully road legal and I have driven it on the road but I was unable to video it and drive it at the same time. There will be a video of it running on the road when I find someone to make the video. I have actually shown me driving it in the garden in a previous video.

Horse flies are just awful things. They are largely sight hunters, and they are drawn to large dark shapes so the canopy on the engine is likely what's drawing them in from a distance. The things will hunt you too... I've been hassled by the same one for ages, constantly swatting it away and failing to hit it. They're also irritatingly sturdy. You need to hit the thing to the ground and stand on it to finish them off. I've seen them pick themselves up, straighten their wings and start flying after me again following a swat. 'Orrible buggers are horse flies! Of course, they might just like the engine, in which case while I still dislike them intensely, I do approve of their taste in engines.
