Running out of petrol in Baviaanskloof - oh no... [S5 - Eps. 21] 

Nothing worse than fuel range anxiety out in the middle of nowhere😟. Fabulous scenery and what an adventure!

Thomas Baines, I’m 67 and ploughing through your amazing journey. Binge watching in my retirement. I am a Scot and my parents moved from Scotland to Joburg in the the early 1960’s. They hated the apartheid regime and decided to return home to Scotland. However we returned via Swaziland where my father worked on the asbestos mines and after about a year or 18 months we continued via Zimbabwe (then Rhodesia) and I went to junior school in Bulawayo at Thomas Baines Junior School. We did not actually leave Zimbabwe until I was 18. I returned to Scotland in 1974 to avoid having to be drafted into the military, I was not happy about the idea of shooting at people because they had a different colour skin to myself. After all one man’s terrorist is another’s freedom fighter (eg Nelson Mandela). Great videos I am enjoying our trip together, however my trip is using a very comfortable recliner and your my motorcycle chauffeur - thank you. Take care.

Watching these trips with Noraly makes me realise just how lucky and privileged we are in SA to be so close to and surrounded by the beauty of nature and wildlife. We should be grateful and take care of it because it is important not only to us but to others too. Thanks Noraly for showcasing it.

The photography is so well done. Noraly passed through a world heritage site where buffaloes, leopards, and rhinos are residents and could have made her isolated drive a lot more ‘interesting’ if her fuel gave up there. The Baviaanskloof is one of the most spectacular reserves to visit. Many overnight places to choose from with interesting people living there. Good luck with the rest of the adventure.

And yet another fantastic vid. Thank you so much. 11:56 looks very much like a Red Hartebeest to me. Not a springbok. Africa has about 70 antelope species of which many occur in SA. So many tourists stick to the Garden route and miss out incredible places like you are discovering. You are a true adventurer and are doing the best job at showcasing this wonderful country. What you achieve with the kit you have is nothing short of creative genius, and I enjoy your vids more than most documentaries' I've seen. You have much to be proud of.

I know I'm a bit behind and watching 9 months old footage. But I just wanted to say that it was just simply brilliant that you talked about "baviaanskloof" the whole time, spend hours and hours driving there and then at the first sight of a "baviaan" only say " oh a baboon, I don't like them!". Absolutely cracked me up!

I was interested in the name Thomas Bain when you said he built roads there, as Bain is a common name where I live in the North of Scotland. A quick Google and his father was born 20 miles from where I am LOL

Loved it! Pity that the fuel situation changed the focus a little towards the end, as the Kloof has some stunning rock formations that I'm sure as a Geologist you would have reveled in. It is a World Heritage Site, and one of the most biodiverse areas in South Africa. Without a doubt, one of the most fulfilling motorcycle rides.

I deeply commend Noraly for being such a brave young woman & for going into such remote areas to show us the great untouched areas! Those baboons were awfully close to your breakfast spot. Glad you were able to eat in peace! The mountains at the first pass are so softly rounded. And the drone footage on the second pass - wow!! When you mentioned your petrol situation, I was waiting for something like running out in the middle of nowhere, then around the bend comes a petrol delivery tank truck. How I enjoyed this one! There's a mountain bike race on this route called the Trans-Baviaans. You start at Willowmore to Jeffrey's Bay and have 24hrs to complete. What an experience! A lot of the wonderful scenery gets lost since you spend many hours riding in the dark. This brought back very fond memories.

I once ran out of gas (petrol) on my 4-cylinder Honda 650 in the ranch lands north of Dallas, Texas. I was returning home to Denton one hot summer afternoon and the engine faltered. I thought "time to switch to reserve' and was dismayed to find it was already on reserve, as I'd forgotten to switch it back on the last refill. Luckily I came to a halt by the entry to a ranch, just as the owner was coming out. He gave me a gallon and i was lucky.

awesome. enjoy SA, I always ride with extra 1L of fuel in a bottle ...been riding for 41 years now all over africa and asia and 1L of fuel saved me on a few occasions... once after and accident/fall in which I lost most of the fuel in my tank. remember to honk before u go into a blind corner....

Many times I watch Itchy Boots and only have to inform my head that at some point in life, I must ride through such places. Hope I still have enough life but nothing is much of a disaster to me as being locked up on a job and more so when I'm working in a foreign land. May God help me regain my independence and thx Norally for taking us around the world.
