Running pedals at 18v vs 9v, what's the difference?

In this video I'll run through a few pedals and show the sound differences between running them at 9v vs 18v. Keep in mind, a lot of the difference is actually "feel", especially in overdrives and distortions, and this is something that doesn't come across well in a youtube video. Highly recommended: Use good headphones or earbuds to listen. You won't hear much of a difference through your iphone speakers.
Oh, and yes I dyed my eyebrows.
Pedals used:
Clarksdale Overdrive: amzn.to/2OTwk6p
Ego Compressor: amzn.to/2On1nGx
Ethereal Delay/Reverb: amzn.to/2vw98mB
Amp: amzn.to/2nneqMJ
If you like the video, please give it a thumbs up and comment below.

This video pretty much sums up why I like Brian's videos. The videos are full of truly informative content (as opposed to "myths" that actually are wrong and odd claims about his own products)... and every now and then he does stuff like dying his eyebrows, just because some dude on the internet jestfully told him to do so.

I run a "Nu tubescreamer" and MXR stereo chorus pedals on my board at 18v. They seemed to make a huge difference on sound for me. Both seemed to add that big clean bell like bottom end sound and clarity. And definitely more volume. Great video, cheers!

Brian, thank you for being a fantastic companion channel to TPS. They provide very good information about pedals and a good variety, but you come in with a technical perspective and really help those of us who haven't learned how to build pedals. You've developed a great focus on helping laymen understand what is under the hood and this video is a perfect example of you seeing an opportunity to teach your viewers/customers valuable information they may not get anywhere else. It truly helps you transcend brand preference into the realm of general utility. You're awesome.

I might be suffering from confirmation bias here, but the Clarksdale immediately sounded different at 18v, and to my ears, better. Listening through a decent, fairly flat set of monitors, I found the drive to be tighter in the low end, and a hair more definition in the mids. I agree that the Ego and Ethereal both sound a bit more bright, but I don't hear enough improvement to give up a precious clean & isolated slot from my power supply. Thanks for the informative video, as always. And…the eyebrows are FIRE!!

The extra headroom obviously affects the gain at identical settings, but the dynamics and harmonics the higher voltage provides are the real magic that you get in comparison.
@thesleepstate

@@jmath679 It wasn't subtle to me at all. These pedals are more exciting and visceral at 18v! That said be careful to check the pedal can take it first.. works for most but for example it will fry a Carbon Copy

Ive been running my Tube Driver on 18v for a while now. It's a bias modded older Tube Driver and I wouldn't recommend doing this to anyone else cause when you pay so much for a rare pedal you don't want to fry it. I got lucky cause the builder didn't know if it would hurt it or not. What I did was split the 18v out on my pwr unit with a 10 band E Q which needs 18v and threw the odd connect into the Driver to see if it worked. It gives it more headroom so I use less gain now. And the older RCA tube inside gets more pwr to use the bias knob with. Sounds pretty cool to me but what do I know.

Brian I had an idea recently while looking at a Rat schem. Have you ever played with changing the pull-up voltage that keeps the signal in the middle of the op amp range, and maybe make the voltage divider a pot? I imagine you could get some interesting clipping from pushing the signal into one of the rails, but I haven't been able to give it a try.

So you rate most of your pedals for both 9V and 18V? I would figure that the added voltage would eventually cause components (mostly the resisters) within the circuit to break down faster than at 9V.

18v feels so much better to me for OD. I've used Klon clones (which naturally turn to 18v), a Prince of Tone at 18v, and now a King of Tone clone with a charge pump built in for 18v. Just feels so much tighter to me.

I found 18v to be valuable mostly in a clean'ish type circuits, be it a boost, preamp, modulation, compressor, eq. But in a gain, fuzz/dist/od circuit it always makes want to go down to 9v, just doesn't feel right at 18.
@msienk01
@msienk01 6 лет назад
Preamps in our amps works with higher than 9V voltage. The goal is to have pedal sounding like an amp. Bogner, gurus, klon - all that run high voltage. 9 volt is converted internally in those units and that is why we love them.

I love using j rocket archer set clean and luod into euphoria 18V in open settings. It is very fast, very open, not so easy to play but it is imposible to not be heard in the mix with this setup. For me it is a holy grail of low gain overdrive sound. I thing the same could be using tumnus.

I have about a dozen pedals that I prefer to run at 18v. I'm looking for a power supply that has more than 4, 18v outputs. Anyone know of one, or am I going to have to build one myself? I've been using a homemade battery box, that has a bunch of 9v battery snaps wired in series, connected to a 2.1mm x 5.5mm cable for each one of my pedals. Carbon batteries are pretty cheap when bought in bulk, and they last a long time on all but some modulation pedals. At least if you remember to unplug them. Just trying to find out if there is a power supply in production, that has 10 or so 18v outputs. Thanks for any leads.

At 9v the Clarksdale sounds like it has a slight upper mid-boost, more of that ACDC sort of overdrive tone, while with the 18v it sounds more "modern" with a bit more weight on the low end. Definitely noticeable when you're purposely paying attention, but doubt most people would ever know... all boils down to how the player feels and how it inspires them.

Check the owner's manual and any printing indicating the acceptable power range by the plug-in. I bet exceeding 9V by double in many circuits can burn up regulators & coils with prolonged use, like it does in cars/tractors/motorcycles/ATVs/boats/etc

BTW: I always wanted to know this (topic fits): Do most pedals have a voltage regulator at the beginning of the circuit (for maintaining the same sound whenever you play it)? Let's say you have a 9V rechargeable battery and as we know it naturally doesn't really deliver 9V. Will a TS upscale the voltage to 9V and drain the battery current a bit more in order to do so? Or will it just feed the circuit with whatever voltage you put in (let's say your power supply has only 7.5 Volts or so!).
