Would have been very surprising if the Vaporfly lost here regardless of the relative weights as that shoe is designed for fast running and the other one clearly is not. Maybe, for a bit of fun, do the same test when you can better utilise a GORE-TEX shoe and run in really wet slippery conditions. I think another angle is do we really need "heavy" shoes. Do they actually provide more comfort and cushioning than a premium foam like ZoomX in a shoe like the Vaporfly.

Good points Tim. I was really trying to get shoes at the either end of the weight spectrum that are designed for long distances. Oddly the lugs on the Infinity's are relatively shallow, the Tomir Waterproof is way better in the wet. The Infinity's are really comfortable walking where the foam is more stable than say the Zoom X in the Invincibles...but if only they could get the weight down. I run in them occasionally if I can only bring one shoe with me and need to get a run in. They feel much better when I am not swapping in and out of Vaporfly's...

Another creative and helpful video, OMR! I appreciate the academic literature as well. Thanks very much! I have found myself to other runners using the analogy of cycling tires, where any little bit of added rotational mass is a drag on time. Well done!

Metricised man is back! Nice one Barry, for running a marathon we have a clear winner - what about walking one?

I would very happily walk a marathon in the Infinity Run 4 GTX...the Vaporfly 3 not so much...but if I was running, VF3 every day!

Running 4.42km pace in the infinity, fair play, I wouldn't fancy that!

Don't think I will see anyone running in a pair in the Olympic Marathon....

Weight is something I always take in consideration when buying running shoes, cause I like them to be lightweight. But I would disagree that weight alone is what makes a shoe faster, there are many parameters to consider like distance, comfort, bodyweight or running form... Would be good making same test using vaporfly against even lighter shoes like saucony sinister for example, I'm sure vaporfly would still make you run faster cause at the same effort they would simply return more power to each stride.

@@joansoler1495 Of course there is much more than just the weight. The plate, the foam, the stack, drop etc. as well as the runners personal characteristics … but weight does play a part. I have Streakflys which I could have used and though lighter and enjoyable to run in they would likely be slower for all the reasons you note. It has been suggested that I add weight to the Vaporfly’s and see what happens…might give that a go…

I think even at the same weight Vaporfly would outperform because of ZoomX foam vs ReactX. Typically in the lab, they add lead weight to the lighter shoe to bring it at the same weight to the heavier shoe to evaluate the effectiveness that foam and other features bring. Anyway, research has determined about 1% running economy gain or loss per 100g of weight difference. I think in this experiment you are largely seeing the benefits of ZoomX foam over ReactX.

I think that the weight is the real difference here, not the foam type. The foam type, plate, stack, drop etc. are all playing a part, but the weight is the big difference. You can feel it immediately and its pendulum effect. That is why I deliberately chose two very extreme shoes, at least in weight terms. In reality people have to choose between different shoes as you can't really buy a light Vaporfly as opposed to a heavy Vaporfly...well you could buy a small and a large, but you couldn't test them. I am expecting a set of lead weights to arrive today and I will repeat the test adding weights to the Vaporfly 3...the placement of the weights has its own difficulties and inconsistencies...and in relity I will be adding weight to my foot rather than the shoe...but we will see what happens...hopefully some fun...

@@OldManRunner I think in the tests with leads they had placed them on top of the foot, along the shoelaces. Yeah attaching them there is an issue. Maybe with zip-ties or gorilla tape. I guess, you can wear long socks and tuck the leads in the sock.

@@TolunayOrkun They’ve just arrived! They are in strips with tape. My plan is to run them along the forefoot under the laces as you suggest…and maybe pop a few somehow in the heel…

Are those Infinitys bulletproof? What did Nike do to make them so heavy? I have a Pegasus 4 Trail GTX in UK 13 that weighs 354 grams and a Hoka Mafate very first version (maybe already 15 years old ) that weighs 415 grams ( also size UK 13 ). That Mafate is my "walking the dog in winter" shoe.

They are bulletproof, well the uppers anyway, the outsole is wearing down. I clean them every now and then with a damp sponge and get the toothbrush on the outsole. The GoreTEX adds a fine layer but it can't be that heavy. Think its the Foam, design and the size of the things....

Great video, regarding the HR. My max HR according to Garmin is 172 and at 162 I begin to die.. The 175 you mentioned is the Max it got or avarage? I am 61...😂
@OldManRunner
@OldManRunner 2 месяца назад
My max HR that I measured on my VO2 Max day is 189bpm. The average for the 7 minute block in the Infinity Run GTX 4 was 161bpm, max 177bpm and in the Vaporfly 3 was 173bpm, max 181bpm and the recovery rate for both is 46bpm. There was a 3 minute break between the two runs, the Vaporfly being the second run.

The Infinit(ies) sound like me... heavier, stiffer and slower. I bet that like me they don’t get better with age either 😂
