In 'Paradise Lost', my upcoming Huey campaign you will fly both slicks and gunships. In real life, older models with weaker engines were assigned to gunship units, which made taking off a bit of a challenge. Let me show you the trick I learned from Huey pilots' memoirs, that's needed to get these things off the ground.

I stand corrected! A friend of mine sent me this message about translational lift, and why it occurs, it's really interesting: "On translational lift, you mentioned that the main rotor started acting like a wing going into forward flight, and that is the same thing I thought must be happening to create translational lift when I started learning forward flight from hover, but it isn't actually what happens. In a hover, whether in ground effect or out of ground effect, there is always some recirculation of the air going from below the rotor back to above the rotor in a doughnut shape. It is actually a small amount of VRS! So dropping out of the sky in full VRS is actually full recirculation of air. When you move into forward flight, that doughnut of recirculating air goes away, so the main rotor gains efficiency, and that is why you start climbing unless you lower the collective."

You already had me at Mosquito sir.. now you've gone doubled down on my favorite module! And Marianas too, you little beauty. Will look forward to the premise of campaign. Great vid.

Thanks! This one is coming along more naturally than any other campaign I've made. There's a lot of research behind it. It's going to be a very exciting one with lots of interesting - and historically accurate - events and challenges.

@@ReflectedSimulations that's got me excited, the extra material you had for Wolfpack really added a lot to it. As with Bio & Zone 5. Wasn't expecting a chopper campaign from you so a welcome surprise!

Read "Chicken Hawk". Robert Masons memoirs as a Huey Slick pilot in Vietnam. There's a passage in that book where an Instructor Pilot teaches a student to get airborne using your technique, yet doing so in a confined space. He did this whilst using anti torque pedal input techniques. I can't recall which pedal (probably right) but it allowed the aircraft to accelerate in a lazy circle. Translational lift was achieved and up they went. I believe this worked, because without any (or less) counter active left pedal more power was available to the main rotor. Lower egt. More lift. Genius. Edit. Assuming if course its effect simulated in the flight model.

Yes, I remember that too! What a great book! Right pedal slowed down the tail rotor and as you said more power was available for the main rotor. Good trick, you’ll be needing it in the campaign ;)

Cool stuff man. I love the Huey and this background you gave makes it more interesting. The gunships over half a tank cannot lift itself off the ground... Unless you do what you just did there.

Is this campaign going to be a bit more of the 'relaxed' type like we got with Fear the Bones? Or will this one be more of the 'serious stuff'? And since the campaign is set in 1968, will it also feature plenty of that Sixties vibe? (you know, CCR songs on the radio etc.) Whichever it's gonna be, I'm looking forward to it.
@ReflectedSimulations
@ReflectedSimulations 2 года назад
Kind of in between. Lots of 60s vibes, lots of background story, but the missions are based on real life and are challenging. Unfortunately no CCR for copyright reasons :(

Can't wait to see that ! Maybe what you could do is put some markers for us to add oursleves the songs at the intended moments with Mission Editor afterwards. That way, no copyright problems for you ;-)

Very interesting, the campaign sounds promising, whats the background for it? Vietnam using the Marianas, or something related to the Marianas itself??
@ReflectedSimulations
@ReflectedSimulations 2 года назад
Alternate history, a fictional conflict in 1968 that is a lot like the Vietnam war. I didn't want to pretend that such a small island is Vietnam, felt more natural this way.

How do you simulate the weaker engined gunship? Is it simply overloading them to thier max to make the engine seem much weaker?
@ReflectedSimulations
@ReflectedSimulations 11 месяцев назад
Yes, I add invisible weight to make them handle like what Huey pilots described in their books.
