Before commenting about no coolant in the engine. Remember these people are diesel surgeons. Very proud of the abilities they have to tear one down to pieces and rebuild into a Swiss watch of an engine. Learn what it is you are talking about before commenting. Please.

Diesel engine running colder than gasoline, i have diesel car once the radiator exploded in the middle of the road, the engine still running about 5 km with only rely on oil cooler
@TomasAWalker53
@TomasAWalker53 Год назад
@@kurniawanapras Good example. However, diesel cars have much smaller engines with thinner engine blocks. Hopefully, that won’t happen again, but if it does? Just keep an eye on your temperature gauge to make sure you don’t “cook” your engine.😩💥👍🏻
@TomasAWalker53
@TomasAWalker53 Год назад
@@kurniawanapras Also, even a gasoline engine is able to run for quite awhile with no water in the radiator. Water is circulating inside the engine still and will help for awhile too. If you have a trustworthy temperature guage or overheating light, then you can keep moving. This is why I prefer temp gauges with the temperature numbers.

I drove an Attack Troop Carrier with two Grey Marine 671's in Vietnam. It was a converted WWII LCM where you had to handle 25 tons deftly using two D-handle four-foot joysticks. I would twist for power on each engine and shift forward or backward for differential thrust. You could pivot the beast very gracefully when needed. Like coming into a pier against a strong current. Many a night sleeping next to them while the night watch drove going up rivers and canals through the jungle. The 671 sound and smell is still hammered into my night memories. I remember dreaming about home then waking up to the nightmare - just the opposite of normal life.

I love the old Detriot Diesels. I had an 8V 92, full 475 hp to the drives. Had a 13 speed overdrive and 355 rear ends. Long time ago ! It was a fast old truck and nothing beats the sound of a screaming DD ! It drank a lot of fuel though !

Still love 6-71's. Drove a 1972 GMC 9500 with a 6-71 hauling steel from the Indiana mills to metro Chicago. With the governor opened could run 70 plus all day with a 50k load. Tractor and 28' trailer scaled at 22,500 with half fuel.
@andrewking4885
@andrewking4885 2 года назад
The best 6-71 story I've read on Ytube in a truck application. What type of steel? and from what I know about 238s you would have got about 6 MPG. I'm from Australia and that's what they got over here 6.5 : 7 MPG but our gallons are a bit bigger than US ones 3.8 against 4.5 The 10sp Road ranger was used a lot behind them as well.

@@andrewking4885 Coils, Tin plate, plate, (Bethleham Youngston) merchant steel - bars, rounds (US Steel Gary) Import coils, some rebar, and some coil ends. Coil end , a real pain in the butt. Road ranger as the predominant trans although there was lone 13-speed on an old 9500. I think the fuel was 70gal X 2. Would open the governor up to 2,400 and they would run all day like that. Without paying too much attention to fuel as I was an hourly driver, half fuel would get me through all day and then some. A high mileage day would be around 150--200 miles and might be two trips to the mill and delivery or just one delivery and back to the barn.

Full of coolant. it has fresh water cooling with heat exchanger. it will run much longer than video without even getting warm.
@TomasAWalker53
@TomasAWalker53 3 года назад
@@damiandiesel1 Your mistaken about that. If you watch again, you'll see the raw water pump is not attached to a source of any kind. It wouldn't have any coolant in the engine as this is strictly a first start after rebuild. Also, there isn't a heat exchanger mounted. It would depend on whether it will go into a truck or run a generator, in which case it would have a radiator. Only in a boat would it be hooked up to a proper marine heat exchanger and coolant added. I think the statement made by Blue Scarecrow was a joke based on ignorance. Obviously, the shop is in the business of rebuilding engines at a cost of thousands before resale and would not risk damaging the engine at this point. So, the lesson is what you saw were professionals running an engine without coolant. It would have had oil installed which has its own cooling properties for a while. I have seen many, many diesel engines tested this way without issue. Unlike a gas engine, diesels will run cool at idle speeds or even at a 1000 rpm. Like sitting at a truck stop or idling at a dock. Temps will only be about 150 degrees. On my tugboat I'll engage the transmission while tied to the dock and increase engine speed to put a load on the engine. This is better for the engine and does increase engine temp to about 165 degrees.
@damiandiesel1
@damiandiesel1 3 года назад
@@TomasAWalker53 No, you are mistaken. This is a marine engine application. The heat exchange is mounted in front with the radiator cap on it, The raw water pump is not turning and both raw water inlet and outlets are open because there is no raw water and he doesn't want to burn up the RWP. The engine is filled with coolant as is the exhaust manifold, but yes, there is no raw water and if it runs at no load for 15 or so minutes it wont need any. i am a 57 year old Detroit Mechanic and shop owner, I 'm pretty sure I know.

To my question, does anyone know how the GMC diesel got the name Detroit Diesel? The answer is International Harvester coined the name, because it looked bad to have a (GMC) diesel in their trucks.G.M. was a competetor co. selling Cracker- Boxes, Astro 95's & Chevy Titan 90's. International was the biggest purchaser of two stroke G.M. engines for their trucks.They coined the name from were they were made, Detroit Michigan.

When I was growing up in the 80s there was still quite a few in use in trucks. I know some people liked them, but mostly that’s what I heard you had to run them wide open because they have no low-end torque, And they leaked a lot of oil. Now everyone talks like they were great. I can see where they be all right for boats or pumps or generators.
