Running Waste Veg Oil As Diesel

Quick look at the WVO system I've installed. My friend gave me 800 gallons of filtered WVO that I've been running in my truck for 10,000 miles. I started out by adding 5 gallons a week to the present 20 gallons a week. No ill effect so far, just keep a spare set of filters handy if going on a road trip.:) Will keep updating on this system as the miles pass. Here's the site I got the filtering ides from.: Veg Oil Car • Cleaning Waste Vegetab... #waste veg oil

I have a very similar setup. Haven't used it for a long time but with recent fuel prices I will be getting it up and running again. Only problem I've had running it for a long time was the tank pickup tubes and pre-filter(sock). Several trucks with quite different tank setups but same issue. However it took 3-4 years for the problem to show. Also adding a biocide is very important. Thats why you're going thru numerous filters on the truck.

I’ll try some biocide in the future and see if that helps. When I first added the veg it really cleaned my tanks, but now it’s settling down to about 3500 miles on the small ford filter. Thanks for watching.:)

the main issue with veggie oil on common rails is polymerization of the veg oil when it gets squeezed to 30k PSI... makes a nice snotty mix that seems to resist everything but muriatic acid :)

Ran 1000s of gallons of home made biodiesel and 90/10 WVO/gasoline in my 1996 7.3. Biodiesel that truck ran clean oil was still amber colored after 1000 miles. 0 power or mileage issues with biodiesel. I would suggest running some of that after settling oil through that centrifuge and see what you pull out if it. I would settle the oil in totes for years sometimes before getting around to using it and draw off the top, I bet you will be surprised what you find in the centrifuge after running clear clean lookin out through it. I just settled pulled through a rough filter into my fuel barrel and pumped through filter into truck with the blended wvo / gas. never had any issues. but I never wanted to spend the $$$ on a centrifuge if I had found a good deal I would definitely have used one. if you use the centrifuge the slower the oil goes through the better.

Thanks, I have a centrifuge but have never tried it. Like you I settle it and then filter through a 24,10 and 2um filter as it's pumped into my truck. I'm now running 90/10 as well and it burns just as clean as the 80/20 mix. I can't tell the difference between wvo and diesel either. Remember to turn the saturated fat fractions into biodiesel, mix that back into the unsaturated veggie oil fractions and use up to 20% pure gum turpentine or 30% gasoline with a cetane additive to mix into the final mix. It works pretty good, also be sure you filter it out we and preheat the fuel as it goes through the lines into the injectors before burning it.

I used to burn WVO in my 1993 6.5. Thinned it 30% with kerosene, and added cetane boost. Other than installing a pre-spin-on filter on the frame, I used the factory fuel filter up top. However, it got cutthroat out there getting the oil so I stopped. I used whole house water filters on my holding tank then the last one being a Goldenrod water separator filter. It was fun while it lasted.

Yes, u can rig an onboard heat exchanger in your truck also that will help out, especially during cold. Instead of tapping your radiator lines, adapt your eng oil filter with a sandwich plate to an10 or pipe thread input/output. Run an insulated hydraulic hose to a liquid to liquid 60 plate chiller, maybe another in series, but parallel the hot loop. Send the eng oil back to the eng bay where u relocate your eng filter, finally route back to the sandwich plate. Add a pump inline somewhere to assist flow. Oh and I guess u might need to make a switchable valve bypass for the engine oil cooler during moments that you want to heat wvo.

I was thinking about converting a 2003 sprinter van to veggie oil, Is their a fuel sensor and if so would I have any issue's with the fuel sensor? And if so how would I go about bypassing the fuel sensor? I also want to run straight 100% veggie oil, So if I use a 2 tank system would 100% veggie oil work If I start on diesel and flush before I turn the truck off or would I still have to add gas or diesel?

I'm not sure if the Sprinter has a fuel sensor or not and how to delete it. I'd find a forum and ask on there if anyone is familiar with that system. Does the Sprinter have the OM642? In theory the two tank system might work, but I'm not sure if you have the common rail engine or not? If you have a common rail engine veg oil may not work. Great job on the conversion. You covered all the bases. I remember seeing a home set up where you can make your own biodiesel from waste vegetable oil. Comes with the tank and all the stuff you need. The only caveat is that if you sell the biodiesel to others, then you have to pay fuel taxes.
