You did amazing! Wonderful trail views too, not going to lie it made me chuckle seeing people randomly sleeping on the trail 😆 hope to be able to do ultras one day, I can only do half marathons now. So I’m living vicariously through you! Thanks for the great content!

I know what you mean about the sleeping runner- That shot cracks me up too. You can certainly do an ultra- I ran my first half in 2014, then my first 50k in 2015. The only thing is training is a big time commitment. Thanks for watching the channel!

I was trying everything I could to fight the mucus! Allergy meds from through hikers and an inhaler from a fellow runner were welcome but didn't help as much as lying down for a little bit. Then Harry's suggestion at the last aid station to pull my buff up over my mouth helped a lot on the last big climb.

@wplate
@wplate 2 года назад
Yes, Six weeks before Tahoe I was at Cocodona! My feeling on the breathing issues is that the cold air combined with pollen and dust to produce the mucus. Lots of runners had similar problems, they said at the finish line that the DNF rate for this rate was Tahoe 200’s highest ever.

@wplate

I blame allergies and high altitude. I paced a friend at 2019 Tahoe, and I had no problems even when climbing up to 9000'. But that was September. I think June has more pollen, and I think my allergies suffered. I have been fighting allergies since before Cocodona. Ugh. I'm mostly better now.

you're doing Bigfoot too right? curious - why the two watches?
@wplate
@wplate 2 года назад
Bigfoot too! and then Moab in October! Two watches, yes! I bought the Coros after Cocodona 2021, I wanted a watch whose battery could withstand an entire 200+ race on a single charge. I ended up being less-impressed with Coros, its battery life is good but it has limitations and is lacking features the Garmin has. So at Cocodona 2022 I brought back my Garmin because its ClimbPro feature is Awesome. I will stay Garmin because of this feature alone. So I decided I would wear both watches as a kind of test. Which did I like better? Turned out I liked having two watches. The Garmin gave me the feature I really wanted, plus better mileage accuracy than Coros, but I could use the Coros as a heart rate monitor and time display. Overkill to have two watches, yes. But at Tahoe, my Garmin ended up crapping out spectacularly, so I was very happy to have the Coros there as a backup recording.

In thise long distance race (over 100m) do you simply follow flags or markers like in a regular 50-100k or you need to have the gps track loaded on watch ans or follow with an app
@wplate
@wplate 2 года назад
Both! The course is marked, as you can see in this video, but mostly at intersections and occasionally in between. We are also required to carry the course downloaded onto a device. I use the GaiaGPS app on my phone to check my position on the course if there's a question. There was a good long bit before we came into Tahoe City the first time where someone had removed the markers from the course, so we were forced to check the route with our downloaded maps.

Congrats on your finish Joe. You probably passed me after Tahoe City on the way back. That last day was tough for me as I struggled with breathing. Thanks for watching!
